My letter to the politicians:
I'm writing to you regarding Lee Point Darwin. The whole natural area is so beautiful and unique that it would be a shame to lose it for many reasons. More reasons that I can manage to write about in this letter.
The rare and endangered goudian finches have nested in the Lee Point forest. I saw through my camera lens and photographed a baby finch waiting to be fed in a tree in the Lee Point forest. A group of people who were with me also saw this. I saw many different kinds of finches in the forest, and other species of bird life as well. I created 2 films and the scenic experience is awe inspiring.

I bumped into tourists and photographers, and bird watchers with binoculars, many who came to see the Lee Point forest and observe the finches from other parts of Australia. Ray Martin visited Lee Point as well. Tourism is a huge industry in Darwin. I read a comment about the tour bus that 'there wasn't much to see in Darwin'. I called the tour operator and told them about Lee Point and they got very excited about it. Without Lee Point there will be one less place to visit.
The wildlife need diverse habitat environments to survive, to breed, to raise and feed their babies. If we want diverse native animals we need to protect and preserve the native diverse habitats in place already.
My child who is 4 years old today, talks about the finches, the shorebirds, and various other wildlife and trees, only because she has experienced Lee Point. I've been to beaches in cities all over the world but sadly they are either non-existent or polluted and don't have the birdlife and other wildlife we have here. Just common ones regarded as 'pests' and are treated badly. Here our beaches are untouched, although problems do exist with pollution and so forth, these will escalate once the development goes ahead.

Stage 1 has cleared such precious tree life necessary for the survival of such creatures. I'd say it would be practical to leave the rest of the forest alone. As the intention is to build housing on the already cleared land, would not the resident's lives be richer and healthier to have such a sanctuary walking distance?
I do believe we need a balance. To take away the whole forest area is senseless. People will move away, I think or be unhappy if no choice but to live there. The temperatures are so high and this type of small boxed housing is impractical in so many ways. I believe the development will look like a slum and over time will fail miserably. Housing can be built elsewhere.
Our young , such as my child need to feel proud of their heritage and have something positive to look forward to. I was born and brought up in Darwin and it saddens me to watch the forest be destroyed. Darwin is losing it's character.
I look forward to hearing from you and I want to be reassured that Lee Point forest will be saved and preserved with ways we can use it to attract ecotourism and money in our economy this way.
I'm sure that with adequate community consultation from members of Friends of Lee Point Darwin we can come up with a better option than losing our forest. Would you consider meeting up with me and Friends of Lee Point to take a look at Lee Point Forest?
