Have you ever sat and watched wildlife on your doorstep? This is what I did for one whole day- morning until night. It's fascinating to watch activity and predict behaviours every year. I notice certain birds and which trees they prefer each season, for example. And the tree that possums love. And the reptiles and snakes that reside at the back, including one we found in our storeroom- harmless children's python. We are lucky to have these experiences in Darwin NT Australia.
The footage was filmed on 25th November, 2021. I looked out today (20/11/2024) and realised why I can't see these birds any more. The tree was removed. A palm of this kind still stands in the front yard of a neighbour's house in Ludmilla (the place I grew up in). The owner has not cut it down although it looks as though it is 'dead' there is a nest perched up high inside it! This made me think deeper about the value of old growth trees and plants.
Although it isn't a native, I've a hibiscus plant that I planted in the year 2000. It is the most favoured spot for birds to nest, right beside my balcony! It's important to note that without the vast area of mangrove habitats nearby, these wildlife close encounters would not be possible. Let's also remember that marine life also depends on these mangroves.
The recent mosquito plaque in Darwin was a shock to the population. Quite often I've heard politicians blame the 'swamp areas', which are indeed MANGROVES and justify destroying these for 'development'. This is obviously wrong. According to my research the warmer temperatures of waters make it ideal breeding grounds for mosquitos. And guess what is causing these warmer temperatures? Yep- removal of trees, plants etc etc
Visit my blog and let me know your thoughts on any environmental issues. Thank you.
