Anyone else notice that Ethan starts out the scene with a different rifle than the one he finishes with? The first is an 1892 carbine with a barrel band and the next shots show him with an 1892 short rifle with a forend cap. Of course, if this is "Texas, 1868" like the movie proclaims in the beginning, none of the weapons used in this scene would have even existed. They should have cap and ball revolvers and 1860 Henry/1866 Winchester rifles (and even that is assuming they would have had access to newly designed weapons right away). Despite the anachronisms, though, this scene is classic!

The Indians didn't choose the spot. The Texans did. They chose to defend at that river because they could get down behind cover while the river would slow the Indians charge and they could just pick them off. It was stupid on the Indians part to attack here - but - as John points out - they (and especially their Chief) have to to save face. They've chased these guys, whom they severely outnumber and now - to back down just because they are on the far side of the water - they don't want to do that. Of course - if they'd had a smarter Chief he would have convinced them to find another crossing point. The problem is - there may not have been one. THIS may have been the ford - which was the reason the Texans were there. Other places the river may have been to swift and to deep to cross. .

GREAT MOVIE! However, they got the guns wrong. The movie starts in 1868 and ends some five years later. All the handguns through out are either 1873 Colts or Model 1892 Winchesters. But what the hell? It's John Ford and company. I'll live with it.
@dtnetlurker2 жыл бұрын
Hollywood often had later models stand in for older guns because those were already antiques by the 30s and 40s. The Colt 1873 for the Remington or Colt percussion, and the 1892, 94, or 73 Winchester for the 1866 or 60. The 1892 Winchester in particular does look rather close to the 1866, so I can see why they often used it.

The only thing that was exceptional was his success at dominating other tribes through know how and technological might. @@CaliPatriot88 Honestly shut up. That person is right. It's a horrible depiction. Imagine if the situation had been reversed. You would find it unsettling, watching depictions of your ancestors being murdered.

@@kam_loves_cats Don't hear British people complaining about The Patriot. In fiction there are usually good guys and bad guys and sometimes those bad guys are Native Americans, and sometimes they are white guys or black guys. Nothing distasteful about this scene.
