As several people here have mentioned, even people with training can consistently miss in real life-or-death situations. The only way to train for these situations is to be in these situations and that carries a certain risk of mortality.

But the gun fights in 1883, are so ridiculous they are the WORST gun fights I've ever seen, even worse than a highschool film. The guys fire about 100 rounds at eachother with pistols, up close, and nobody gets hit with a stray bullet. It's SO stupid. @@Ritalie you need to take into account that not everyone could afford a gun at that time let alone practise using up expensive bullets. So those that did were not crack shots. @2be Blunt No, it's that if he drank the whiskey at that point, it would make him a robber, as opposed to simply having shot down men in self defense (which is not immoral). The whiskey was not his- he was attempting to buy some, but now that the bartender is dead, he cannot. Buster is an extremely moral guy- he only kills in self defense when threatened or challenged, doesn't steal, and doesn't even provoke the guy with real "fighting words". And he doesn't take pleasure in killing people, despite his smile. He's just very matter-of-fact about it, which a lot of people confuse for enjoyment. He's an interesting character. He's not a good guy, because he isn't very merciful, but he is moral. If you don't cross him, you'd never have anything to fear.
@joshuacunningham46864 жыл бұрын
@@jadedandbitter idk, about self defense. The guy pulled his shirt back showing that he had a weapon, for all we know he may of planned to use it or may have been a scare tactic/bluff. Then the other proceeded to kill everyone in the bar. Not know the true intentions. Then with the bartender, he reached for his rifle and the other guy shot first, so it most definitely was an action of self defense, yet he got shot dead while being innocent to the situation.
@jadedandbitter4 жыл бұрын
@@joshuacunningham4686 So the first guy to get shot displayed a firearm, put his hand on it, and made a threatening comment, indicating that he intended to draw on him. A police officer will shoot you if you put your hand on a firearm with intent to use it on him. The other guys were only shot when they attempted to draw, and the bartender wasnt involved in the fight, so his actions werent self defense. Being that he only went for it in response to buster being a threat, its clear he intended on using it to assist the other men, and Buster knew it, hence him getting shot as well. Had he not reached for a firearm, he would not have been shot. Same for everybody else there.

Someone mentioned Tom Cruise having to train for weeks to get that 'comfortable' at handling his gun. That sounds true. The actor Jack Palance played the "bad guy" in the western "Shane." (He was too good as a psycho, no wander he did such a good Dracula later.) He was noticed to have used every spare moment on the set practicing his quickdraw technique. At the end of the shooting schedule the "western specialist," (these films have people on set who have actually done what goes on in the movie's script, such as wrangle cattle, scouted in the wilderness, etc, [indeed, there is a persistent rumour that the real Wyatt Earp was one such for some early silent Hollywood westerns,]) said that Palance had become very good in his shooting technique. Practice makes perfect.

Most of these scenes are choreographed and edited to achieve a polished, flawless look. Impossible otherwise. Quigley was doable. Maybe, not by me or you, but a dedicated individual that lived with his rifle, the way Quigley did, would/could have accomplished those shots. Nothing magical, just hard work and practice.
@bentnickel74874 жыл бұрын
Carlo, I can't address everything that the character did in the movie, but the pistol shootout by the two main actors didn't require special effects or CGI. That was completely realistic for that era. On the other hand, Buster Scruggs needed flawless editing, Computer Generated Imagery and choreography. No one person could do what he did in that bar scene killing all those men singlehandedly.

I loved that so much it’s what got me into shooting drills.

The hardest part of a draw is getting your hand on the weapon to pull it out of the holster. I noticed most hollywood movies just have the guy already have it in hand. Collateral is the exception. There is also running the film up just a little to make if faster. The major rule is NEVER get your firearms training from any movie.
