Listening to the last 2 minutes of this soundtrack and imagining Ethan and Martin finally bringing the frightened Debbie home.....only to have everyone go inside and close the door on Ethan, leaving him outside still searching for peace of mind, wondering in the wind. oh my gosh, THANK you, Fred!! My fav John Wayne movie I loved SO much that I named my only child (US Coast Guard) Ethan. Even ended up behind a very polite young Ethan Wayne at Newport Bank once. In 1956 the legendary relationship between director John Ford and actor John Wayne reached another peak: “The Searchers” is a western that deals with drama and racism; one of the few times we see John Wayne in the role of a pretty dark character - and how well he performs as such! It is true that we had a music video of the score already published, but this was made a long time ago and it was felt to give it a deserved revisit. On top of that the new re-release of the score from 2013 by BYU/FMA Records, that features the music in mostly very advanced sound quality in comparison to their original release from 1996, was used for the best possible listening-experience. Of course, we have the legendary “Searchers” song, as written by Stan Jones and performed by the Sons Of The Pioneers included at the end. To quote the description to find at screenarchives com: “Steiner had written music for dozens of westerns but this was, by far, his most dynamic and muscular exercise in musical storytelling.” Enjoy!

1956: Max goes off into uncharted territory here, scoring a Western for John Ford with John Wayne in the lead. Abandoning his usual lush composing style, this is hard-hitting action music. But Ford movies usually have sentimental streaks in them, so Steiner goes to his strength for those. Among the most underrated movies ever; Wayne, Ford and Steiner deserved Oscars for this, along with Ward Bond.

While keeping in.mind Max Steiner added enormously to this movie, to the point of which no composer, living.or dead could the idiomatic peak Steiner did in this score- keeping all that in mind, Steiner was privileged to be part of the best movie of America's greatest film director, ever. John Ford not only gave us the drama of Greek Tragedy in this film, the visuals-composition within the frame and just stunning beauty- made him a favorite with Orson Welles, Sergei Eisenstein, Akira Kurosawa, and Ingmar Bergman. John Wayne gave a stunning performance. He was known as easy- going on most sets, but those people on the set of The Searchers knew enough to Leave John Wayne Alone. He considered it his best performance, and named his youngest son after the character he played- Ethan

This movie is one of the "Duke's" best in his was 200 motion pictures he made in his lustrous career. I think the Academy had him nominated for "Best Actor" in this picture. Interesting to note by Fred that film composer, Max Steiner thought this film was very intense in scoring. I have seen it a few times on TV and with Wayne's usual "side kick actors" the movie always delivers a good message. My favorite character in this show: Hank Worden, who played "Mose Harper" ( "Thank ya kindly mam.") Worden was some kind of character! Seemed to have always been...well, "old" in everything he did. Remember him in the Clint Eastwood flick- "Every Which Way but Loose" (1979): " You say your lookin' for a girl named Lynn Halsey?" "No, I hadn't...seems like everybody's been lookin' for her. My, she must be a real good lookin' girl."

@@nstix2009xitsn It's a head scratcher. Tastes change, and some art is more subtle (Searchers vs King & I vs Around the World in 80 Days), requiring more time to gain appreciation. The Searchers is certainly in retrospect one of the finest of that year - although Giant would give it a run for its money (although, to be fair, the Academy is not about making predictions of taste sixty years hence). Then again, King Vidor nominated for Best Director for that turgid War & Peace of his. Uggh!

Hank Worden is best known for "Mose Harper," but I think his best screen perfor-mance was as the Native American "Poor Devil" in Howard Hawks, The Big Sky.

He really WAS OLD in Every Which Way But Loose! And the only time Wayne was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, outside of True Grit (won) was for Sands Of Iwo Jima in 1949 (lost). His move The Alamo was nominated for Best Picture in 1960 (lost).

0:28 Pretty sure it's a song called "Lorena". Seems like it was used a few times in the movie. If you're not familiar with the song it's an American classic. Dates back to 1858. Certainly explains Ethan and his brother's wife exchanging a really long look.

The interchange between Martha and Ethan is so subtle and tender, the loving way she handles his reb' coat, the kiss on her forehead. It's like a whole chapter that's only expressed in a few looks. This is what Hitchcock would call "Pure Cinema". It's heartbreaking because you know their love was star-crossed. Ford was one of the best. For a cantankerous old bastard, his heart is quite evident here.

Yes, Lorena is played throughout. You probably know (but others may not) that it is a Civil War era song, played in both Southern and Northern camps. It was finally banned in all camps as when it was played and sung there were always men who went awol. I can see why.

Hello Vivien and thank you very much for your message! Unfortunately I can't give you a pleasing answer. Steiner did reuse some arrangements or motifs in his very extensive career here and there indeed but I don't know anything about a musical connection between Searchers and GWTW. If yes, I am sure it can be read in the booklet of the 'new' 2015 Searchers CD. Unfortunately I do not have the right amount of time to look it up at the moment. Maybe through the next couple of days but I can't guarantee anything, as much is up to do... Do you know more about that cue and where it is placed in the movie (Searchers)? That could help investigating for sure... Best! Fred

I know Steiner used parts of previous scores in other films. I think that the comment that I read has to be with "Maryland my Maryland" cause in that GWTW scene we can hear that tune..then the "Virginia Reel" and then the waltz. Im not sure the person was right telling that "...he can hear that tune in "The Searchers" as "Maryland.." is a classic Xmas song from 1600..later used in the Civil War. Hi Franklin, that's an interesting question, indeed! I have to admit that I didn't see every picture of which the music is featured here (it would be great to have that much time, though). Many people request music videos of movies I luckily have the soundtracks of, simply because I like the composer but not yet seen the movie or something like that. Often it happened that working with a certain soundtrack I just HAD to see the movie afterwards, because it was musically that fantastic. Years ago, when Steiner's score for SEARCHERS had been released on CD, it was my duty to watch the movie after listening. Just because his music was that great and by then I learned that it was one of the greatest westerns ever made. Partially thanks to Steiner! Best to you! Fred

Hello LaSharown, I thought I know who you mean, but I listened to the cue and read the booklet (gladly the score was released). Unfortunately there are no mentions of violin players, whatsoever. However, the cue is filled with violins anyway, no solo one. BUT at the end we have a cello solo and I remember Eleanor Slatkin (mother of conductor Leonard Slatkin), who was famously known for working at Warner Bros., contributing to many Steiner and Korngold scores (she actually performs Korngold's cello concerto in "Deception" (1946)). She probably is the one you are looking for. Hope that could help. Best! Fred
