Thanks for the video, that is a wonderful piece of art and a neat tip of the hat to a bygone era. Up here we had T Eaton Co. that was sort of a Canadian Sears, but we had Sears as well. For those that don't know, both Sears and Eaton's up here sold houses out of the catalogue. Growing up in Saskatchewan a good friend grew up in a mail order catalogue kit house, but I can't remember if it was a Sears or an Eaton's. Came in by train back in those days.

Are you the same Brian Pearce that writes for Handloader magazine? If so, you were a tremendous help with both your articles on the 327 Federal cartridge. As reloading manuals have so few loads and they are all full power loads. Your loads for the Speer 98 grain hollowbase wadcutters is great.

I love the look of that gun and thank you for keeping it as a shooter and not a safe queen. One question though. Would you happen to have an idea where I could get a copy of the issue of Handloader magazine where this gun was featured. My dad got me a copy when the issue came out but it was taken from my locker at my previous job. Loved looking at that on my lunch break. So getting a video where I get to see it and see it shoot is fantastic. There’s something about that authentic 4-click sound you just don’t get with the repros

I LOVE Colt SAA guns... sadly they are very expensive these days but we are in luck with the Italian clones of which I have a half a dozen or so. I grew up in a time where Sears and Western Auto and other chain hardware sold guns. Over the counter (get permission from mom and dad if not 18 years old) we also took rifles to school for marksmanship sponsored by the NRA. You might want to research how many school shooting we had in the 60's and 70's... Western Auto sold Winchester 94's marked with their name. I know it is never really reality to be nostalgic about old days because we forget the bad but in the case of firearms? IT WAS ALL GOOD. There was no bad. Guns were sold in the classified adds between private parties and later gun shows became popular. buy something and walk out with it. I remember a dentist near me bought a 20 mm cannon which was shipped to his doorstep Raise your hand if you ever heard of a crime using a 20mm cannon (other than in movies) About the only thing better about today is the huge selection of firearms for sale and the fact that many are very inexpensive.

Ok... at 74 and a lifelong gun enthusiast mostly handguns. I have to say that I would probly agree with you 90% or better of the time. this is simply not one of those times. One of the things I have learned is to not get set in my ways and welcome new ideas/tech On that.... the first gen Colts were not the best steel there is. They were a step above the wrought iron of the percussion days but.... and most would be work hardened at least. So seeing 'hundreds' of these guns with broken safety notches would not be too much of a stretch except that it would mean that they broke once they were old and worn or that they broke when almost new and the owner just set them aside for a hundred years or so? I am just a table top gun parts replacer LOL... I love old guns and as such have seen MANY that were worn out. they either did not function or were.... unsafe. new parts generally cures both. Put a new hammer and trigger into a first gen Colt and then tell me how easy they are to break.

My 12 your old son is responsible for that epicgamerultimate name, my name is John Weber I have been a subscriber for decades now of Handloaand Rifle. If you made a video on the 327 Federal I would watch over and over. If you made one already I need to scroll through your channel. My wife is not much into shooting, but she has put over 150 rounds through my Ruger Single Seven using one of your plinking loads from Handloader magazine. Thank you for your research on a caliber so obscure the reloading don't publish much data on.

I will however.... disagree with the John Wayne movie "load one skip one load four' way of loading a Colt SAA (or clone) Colt intended to make a 6 shooter not a 5 shooter. Duh... they never intended to have people turn their 6 shooters into five shooters.. Colt provided a safety notch. al lot of movie buffs don't even know it exists. It is....... the first notch... and it's purpose is to keep the hammer mounted firing pin off the primer of a live round. if you look at a Colt hammer you will see that the safety notch is the most robust of all the notches. it takes several tons of pressure to break it. I have never seen nor anyone I know has ever seen a broken safety notch... I have however seen a broken half cock notch. The advertisements of the day from Colt said to load all six (duh!) and then cock the gun to the first click or safety notch which moves the hammer back a bit more than one eighth of an inch. it is noticeable to a practiced eye. Elmer Keith (of which I admire greatly) is the only other person that said to load five while using a horse. His theory was that while throwing the saddle over the horse a heavy stirrup COULD swing around and hit the hammer causing the gun to go off. He never witnessed such an event... but.... they have happened.. and guns being dropped and going off are also documented. Science tells us that is impossible unless.... the gun was not in the safety notch. If it were possible we would see many many examples of Colts from the day that showed a broken trigger nose or safety notch. We do not. So where did this load one skip one etc thing get started? Keith in an aside in a book and John Wayne in a movie...... and now? gun writers and such If you believe that Colts should be 5 shooters instead of six you most likely believe that Baldwin did not have his finger on the trigger Oh... and yes... it is safe to carry a 1911 with the hammer down on a loaded chamber but....another day.
@Bullymcguiree

This is the dumbest thing I have ever read! I have personally seen many colts with broken triggers and safety notches. It is not a safe way to carry a saa type gun if it's a serious using gun.... meaning packing in the mountains, on horse back, or any type of serious work. You probably never carry yours besides from your house to your car to the range. Congrats on being an idiot and don't shoot your leg off
@PearceBrothersGearGuide
@PearceBrothersGearGuide 3 ай бұрын
Safety is always priority and using the "safety notch" is not safe. Triggers and hammers break all of the time in single actions and the "safety notch" will not withstand multiple tons of pressure. They actually break pretty easily. Carrying with the safety notch may be "safe" in very low stress and low risk environments but if you ride or work a ranch or are in thick brush that safety notch is no longer safe and is a risk. They do break way easier than people would think. When broken that safety notch is compromised.
@doranmaxwell1755
@doranmaxwell1755 3 ай бұрын
@@PearceBrothersGearGuide I would love to have you show real life examples I have seen people beat on the hammer with.... a hammer... The trigger engages the safety notch much more than the other positions. they do not break in the safety notch. I believe you are confusing the half cock notch for the safety notch. a cursory glance will make the difference obvious. Do you honestly think Colt intended a 5 shooter? Do you honestly think Colt knew nothing of safety when it came to the 1873 but was super aware on EVERY OTHER HANDGUN THEY MADE?
@PearceBrothersGearGuide
@PearceBrothersGearGuide 3 ай бұрын
I've literally repaired hundreds of safety notches and triggers on broken Colts. They do break! That's why Uberti and Pietta have both gone to the two position base pin because, for importation purposes, they will not pass a drop test on the hammer from 3 feet! So feel free to carry however you would like but you are putting yourself and others in danger. Thanks for commenting
@Bullymcguiree
@Bullymcguiree 3 ай бұрын
My last comment got deleted. I really don't think you know anything about guns... especially arguing with Brian Pearce about the SAA. He knows more about revolvers than you could ever hope to learn. Hopefully you don't have an accident. I have seen and owned many colts with broken triggers and safety notches.
