Stopping you getting the chance. Everton were drawn into the competition so their path can be plotted and if they were going to win the European cup they would have had to do it the hard way. Anderlecht would not have been a walkover and were a really good side in Europe back then Indeed they outplayed Bayern to get to the semi finals and were unlucky not to get to the final itself. Omonia Nicosia should have been straightforward. They would then have had Bayern Munich in the quarter finals and while Anderlecht beat them, the dynamic would have been different if their opponents had been Everton. They were desperately hoping they would meet Everton that season because they were hungry for revenge as they felt Everton had gone dirty in the CWC of 85. Everton didn't meet many teams willing to have a go at them that year but when they did, the games were on a knife edge. Then came actual champions Steaua Bucharest who were a truly horrible team to play against. They suffocated much better Anderlecht and Barcelona sides to win the trophy ugly and would naturally have tried to suffocate Everton too. Finally came Barcelona, who would absolutely have loved to have played Everton instead of Bucharest. Everton were given permission to play a friendly at the Nou Camp in 1987. It finished 6-0 to Barca. EA sports ran a simulation of Everton's run. Anderlecht 1-0 at Goodison 0-0 in Belgium. Nicosia 2-1 in Cyprus 3-0 at Goodison. Bayern Munich 2-1 at Goodison, 0-2 in Munich. Ironically, if that's a barometer, it should be Bayern fans cursing. They beat Steaua in the simulation and beat Barcelona in the final.
