I've been binginbg on Holmes in three versions... but Brett and his Watson are the very best, capturing the spirit of the written stories.

The way he asks Watson not to reveal all to lady Hilda( 5.03).superb!!!! And that infectious smile of his. He is keen enough to see through her agitation.

+Adriana Cuadrado Agreed! I've read about half of the canon Holmes stories, and I believe Jeremy Brett fits the role perfectly. Nobody else comes close.

Brett is a wonderful actor, and he is the closest to canon, however I think that there are many other actors who have succeeded in portraying the role superbly, by adapting the character to fit different circumstances, and to keep the stories alive. Without the modern adaptations, many people would not go back to look at the originals.

@shizzlepie Brett was such an amazing actor. Shame most people, movie-goers even, never heard of him. At 6:57 he reminds me of Mark Strong, another most brilliant actor.
@turockandar12 жыл бұрын
@turockandar between the readers active participation and Dolyes genius for description; his mental attributes far outweighing his purely physical description. Doyle thus made Holmes so powerful that till this day many people feel that he actually existed. Doyle was an opthalmologist and yet it was his "inner eye" which perceived the real depth of the characters he created. Brett brings passion and dedication to the role but the 'true' Holmes cannot be incarnated in film.

Perhaps this recognised apparent trait, could/should have been provided more light in order to discover possible challenges an honourable person like Dr.Watson might have as a man. We can consider after many episodes, Holmes receives his stimulants by other means.

@KurtAngle89 Ha ha ha the "suddenly raised voice" reminiscent of Pacino in Heat sudden raising his voice comically (probably intimidated by De Niro's reputation). You, like me, are a purist I imagine.I must say that agree that a "perfect" Homles will not come as an actor for the following reason; as Shakespeare before him Conan Dolye had a genius for descriptive language which conjured exceptionally strong visual images and for character building. The character of Holmes comes from the synergy..

@amit79ful It is a Nietzschian and Schopenhaueresque statement of the inferiority of women pure and simple for as the former wrote in Beyond Good and evil: "Where neither love nor hate is in the game a woman is a mediocre player" followed by:"Comparing man and woman in general one may say: women would not have the genius for finery if she did not have the instinct for the secondary role". Quad erat demonstrandum!

Ok, i'm ready to be insulted by a million people at a time, but it REALLY irritates me the way Brett raises his voice with no apparent reason while speaking. And, i recognise he is the actor who put the more effort, passion, and dedication (even to the extreme) to the role of Holmes, thing for wich i respect him immensely, but i DO NOT consider him the perfect, insuperable Holmes. In my humble hopinion, a "perfect" Holmes is yet to come, and maybe won't ever come. Just personal opinion.
@lydiawho128 жыл бұрын
KurtAngle89 Sherlock in the books is described as having "mood swings" and very dramatic ones at that. He would very often raise his voice without any indication (much to the annoyance to Watson sometimes) or reason in the books this is why Brett does it because it was how the original Holmes behaved
