The books were not very good, they were rather boring. But an old rule of thumb says: the worse the book the better the movie. And this series is great, the acting, the costumes, the setting, well, the lot is a superb bit of cinema. IMHO

Jeremy Brett has Holmes down pat. All the tics and Eccenticities. And Edward Hardwicke is the Perfect watson. I always hated the bumbling characters they had in the early stuff. He was a bad ass who served in the Army.

Some Holmes scholars believe that her ladyship was having an affair with Lucas--something much more damaging than an old love letter. Of course, my question is this: If so few knew about the letter's existence, how did this spy Lucas know about it, and that a woman fit for blackmail would have access to it?

Has anyone else ever looked at Jeremy Brett and realized that even without trying, he's THE perfect Severus Snape? He puts Alan Rickman to shame, and he wasn't even in the movies!

Thanks. And you make an excellent point as well. If Lady Hilda was having an affair, it was for the thrill of it. I think you're right about her loving intrigue; she was dramatic again when Holmes confronted her. Oh, I reread the original story and learned that Lucas had a spy in the foreign office-he learned of the letter that way. Scholars speculate that Holmes dealt with this spy. And that prime minister suspected Lady Hilda and sacked her hubby later.

steemdup only very good adult friends of the same gender might use christian names. But not using first names did not mean you could not be close friends. And chances of them using first names in public were even less.

6:11 Holmes, in his flourishing style of hand gestures flings the match used to light his pipe then promptly sets about to almost burn down his flat -- very funny touch! I was starting to think that Holmes's style of gesturing especially when he wanted to signal that he was finished his 'interview' with a client was rude and dismissive -- but perhaps that's an actor's interpretation or slightly exaggerated form of non-verbal cues more for the benefit of the viewer/audience.
