At dawn on 22 June 1941, German Wehrmacht units crossed into Soviet territory, marking the beginning of an almost four-year-long campaign of destruction that would claim millions of lives. Hitler had already informed his generals what he envisioned for this war against the Soviet Union: a brutal 'campaign of extermination' that would dismantle the Russian state and exploit its people to the point of starvation. Despite signs of the impending attack, Soviet leader Stalin remained in denial about the threat posed by his former ally. After six months, the Wehrmacht finally stalled just outside Moscow. Blinded by past Blitzkrieg victories, German commanders pushed their forces deep into Soviet land, yet the swift victory they anticipated never came. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Japan-Hitler's ally-drew the United States into the war in the Pacific. With conflict spreading across continents, World War lI had truly engulfed the globe

I disagree with the practice, that is becoming wide spread of blurring out photo's or film of bodies. The real horror of these deaths needs to be seen. Not sanitized.

I'm surprised they didn't mention the road of life during the Leningrad siege. When the lake froze over the Red army drove convoys over the lake and German artillery used them as target practice. The Red army drivers drove with one leg out the door incase the truck went through the ice

I think this is an accurate video , as far as I've seen to this point . I wish that there was no blurring censor ... but I'm sure that you're just playing by YT rules. So that's not your fault . I'm a new subscriber now because I'm interested in the new footage that you have and of course because you have accurate knowledge about the war . I can't wait for more videos . Great job .

This operation failed on the back of the horses back. Over 600,000 horses were used to move what the railway lines couldn’t move. During winter over 50% of supplies being moved was for the needs of horses not the war effort. It was this slow movement that couldn’t match the military ability to drive large distances with it vehicles. As the number of horses dropped having been eaten to keep soldiers alive started to have real issues that couldn’t be overcome.
@genekelly8467Ай бұрын
Indeed, General Von Paulus (head of Logistics) predicted in 1941, that the offensive would stop once the front lines advanced about 100 KM from the railheads (the trucks would use the fuel they carried to just reach the front. He was proven correct-the offensive petered out in mid December 1941. Russia was simply too big..and the German Army too small. Russian forces outnumbered the Germans by Hune 1942-from then the Russians would grow stronger, the Germans weaker.
@GrouchyOldDad21 күн бұрын
It was simple. This works in France, which has roads and rail and is small. It doesn't work in a HUUUUUGE country like Russia. The analogy is that "blitzkreig" (which isn't what the Germans called it, it was Bewegunskreig - war of movement) is called " a hot knife through butter", which is fine when the butter fits in your hand. But when the butter is the size of a railroad car.....not so much.....lol

Like the Russian people, this was the first time I'd ever heard Stalin's voice also. Not exactly a dynamic speaker. However, the Soviets defeated the Germans, and that's all that matters. It must have been incredibly frustrating for the Russians to wait for the 2nd front.
