IT wss indeed a huge secret to keep. Many keep it and fiddle around it. Instead of carrying that weight the dyslexic ones should just put pride away and ask for help. Being able to read is like a passport.

@@hassiroonbyer1250 It's not so much a matter of pride. It's more a matter of shame. Everything in your life starts with how you do in school. Your whole future is predicated on your grades and how easily you learn. Kids pick up on this and if they aren't learning easily it becomes a matter of shame. As adults we often magnify this by equating good grades with conduct. A good kid gets good grades and bad kids get bad grades. When you are trying your hardest, doing three times the work as all the other kids and still failing what does that say to your self esteem. "I must be a bad kid and get shamefully poor grades." It's no wonder a kid would want to keep that from showing. Kids don't know there's any help. Most adults don't know either. They hide it and from then on they consider themselves the only ones who have the problem. I've known several adults who only realized what was wrong with them when their kids were diagnosed. It hasn't been long since the time when learning disabilities were even realized by most schools. Within my life time. Now they are much easier to diagnose and many teachers are knowledgeable but it"s only been a couple decades.

My late FIL, a WWII Englishman had to drop out of school at 11, to go to work when both older brothers died at Dunkirk so he was left to support a widowed mother. This 12 year old worked FT from then on till age 70, thru a 60 yr happy marriage, and raised 5 kids. I never knew till he was gone he could not read nor barely write. His wife was well-educated and covered for him. He kept the secret. He was one of the most intelligent men I ever met. This movie is very meaningful.

My Dad had a 3rd grade education and was of, if not the smartest person I've ever known ! A genius at math. Argued with my cousin who was a very smart college student in the 1960's about how awful marxist & socialism is. He was Totally Correct and Blew my cousin out of the water . Watched this just to see Kirk. A mild film compared to a Kirk film I have never forgotten called 'Spartacus'. How well he hopped on horses in his western flicks too. What an amazing man. This story showed the strength of spirit. Without ever really knowing why he was different he kept a secret with all those who knew his secret too and still helped him thrive in life. This story isn't just about his secret but the love and care his community showed because everyone saw Kirk as a man who actually loved people.

This movie had my crying. My little sister wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until after high school. We were both pretty damn good volleyball players & I’ll admit my sister was way better than I. However because of her dyslexia she was put in “special” classes for slow kids and wasn’t allowed to participate in school athletics. She played in the church league & we won every year. It breaks my heart that so many intelligent, talented kids were made to feel inferior because of a learning disability.

I was born in 1950 I have dyslexia.i was made to feel thick.stupid etc in my day.my daughter had dyslexia but reading was her problem.she couldn't do problem sums like myself.but put 12 eggs down and then we can get the answer but the sum.the reading part we couldn't understand yet still in the 70 to 80 you had nasty teachers that made her feel thick stupid etc.until one teacher understood the problem.THATS WHAT I CALL A REAL TEACHER.SOMEONE WHO LISTENS.UK

What a beautiful and heartfelt storyline! Reading is indeed fundamental! Not being able to read is akin to having a handicap. There are so many people who can’t read and suffer with the condition labeled as dyslexia. Although it sounds complicated, it can be detected through testing and managed. There’s nothing to be ashamed of but does require much-needed action and perseverance. The only shame is not taking the necessary action to seek help.

I was born with Dyslexia and lived with it hidden until I was 40 years old. I knew that I had to work harder than anyone else but I never knew why. When I was tested and learned my weakness it was both a relief and something to be ashamed of and so I like Grandpa kept the secret going. What a heavy load that has been. John Biccum , I have it too . My husband and our son has it , but not our daughter . I think now days they even include what they call Adult Attention Deficit as well . It's hard to pay attention to what your reading or anything else . I found out later in life that I have that too . My mind wonders when I'm trying to do a certain thing like counting money or reading . I really have to concentrate on what I'm doing or I will mess up . I'm 52 yrs old and I still have that problem . It's just the way God made us . I'm like you I have always had to work hard . I can read , but if I feel like I'm being pressed I can't concentrate on what I'm doing . I have been saying for years that there should be a school just for kids that have dyslexia , because kids that have dyslexia learn differently than other kids do . I sure wish there had been a school like that when I was in school . It is embarrassing when other kids teases other kids who have dyslexia . They can be so mean . 😢

@@bonniebrown6960 At 52 you are still very young, I have more than a few years on you. I was on the very high end of Dyslexia. So even though I had to work harder than others I was able to work above and beyond my disability. However, I knew that something was wrong and I tried so hard to hide whatever part of me was broken. I was not diagnosed until my mid 40´s after I had suffered a severe accident and a wise Doctor decided to run some tests on me. Now at 66 and counting, I still know that I am different than others and I am embarrassed because of all the mind games and tricks that I have to do in order to look and feel normal. By the way, just what is normal anyway? Every person that I meet has a different idea and not one of them fits who I am. I agree about the children teasing and more, however, unfortunately, it does not end with children. People my own age still manage to get under my skin with their comments and it hurts and that is one reason why I have chosen to become almost a hermit for the last 13 years. COVID is a Godsend for me, it helps hide my fear of people. Be safe and thanks for the comment. Blessings

Just like when my kids were growing up , my daughter was so smart when it came to books , but no common sense. Bless her heart . But then with my son it was right the opposite . He has to work hard too . He did how ever finish high school . He works for a tree service and is an arborist now . He has his own grew , but for now he still has to work . Bless his heart . Unless I tell anyone about this they don't know unless I tell them . I hide it too , because it does embarrase me as well . Sometimes I can't hide it , but I try my best . I'll be praying for you . My older daughter has dyslexia, and attended primary school at around the same time as this story was filmed. Living in Australia, it's impossible to imagine having to travel and pay an exorbitant price to be tested. Thank goodness for the Australian school system and the wonderful teachers who are trained to recognise learning disabilities early on and get the right help. Incidentally, my daughter has a University degree and has had a successful career in many areas of life. Her father and step father couldn't be more proud of her and were always supportive. I glow when I think of how she overcame the challenges and took out every Citizenship award for her time spent helping others with learning disabilities. Tch Tch...this poor little boy.

Great story every parent should see. I worked at a school where there were many children with dyslexia. Everybody helped them to get by and they were never put to shame. I can spell and write and read very well, but I can not for the life of me read out loud, never could. I never read my children stories, I told the stories. Thank you for sharing this true to life story with us. Was great to see Kirk Douglas and Bruce Boxleitner again. So soft on the old eyes they are...

That would be wonderful. Not my experience. Other kids treated me like a POS and many teachers even worse. By the 8th grade I had given up on school. I pretty much got my own education. Later when I had a chance for college I studied everything I could about dyslexia and figured out a way I could be successful on my own. I made it and now every chance I get I try to give back. I'm pretty good on the legal requirements schools must follow and at reading psycho-educational evaluations. I help parents find the right programs for their kids and when I meet any kids with dyslexia I try to make them understand that it does get better but that they have to put some very hard work but it's doable.

I could not read tell I was in my 30s. I'm 100% self-taught. I home schooled myself. Phonics.. what a miracle. If you have a child that can't read or even has a heard time, try phonics. The schools should have never done away with phonics. Sight reading does not work for all

A Beka Book phonics is excellent. If nothing else, get their "Handbook for Reading: The New Blue Backed Speller." They also have flash cards, readers, and workbooks. But if you get nothing else, get that one book that contains all the information. I have nothing to gain, but I share my experience with you.

Michelle Castaneda ...so very true! Some of today’s teachers need to be re educated. When I used to volunteer with reading, first thing I noticed was this little boy who kept covering one eye and then the other. I was curious, so I asked his teacher if he could be tested for dyslexia. Indeed , the child was tested and he did have dyslexia. Afterwards the experts took over. He did well after that. 😀

Alimoo1971, my oldest son was diagnosed in early 80’ and now after all the years of frustrations, I’m looking at my hubby as I watch this movie and see maybe why I have to explain to him over and over, how to use his phone, read directions and write checks for him etc...even his over reacting over silly things is troubling me now. After a few fist pumping meltdowns in the past, I suggested he see a doctor...nothing doing...😔

wow...kinda like my family story. My cousin couldn't read either and they wanted to fail him, so MY MOM intervened and promised to TEACH him to read during the summer months...AND SHE DID and he learned. He was in grade 3 and didn't read hardly at all, because he was lazy and has ADHD. Well he learned to read and entered 4th grade and then eventually went to college. He didn't fail schooling at least, but the ADHD is still very tough for my cousin who is now in his 50's.

I also grew up with severe dyslexia. They decided I was retarded, and they had me tested to find out how bad it was. My IQ came out at 134 verbal, and 154 inductive -- Average: 144. My dad about shit bricks, This was in the 1950s and early 1960s, and The concept of learning disabilities was basically ignored or unknown. I would have thought the serious speech impediment that prevented me from pronouncing long "E"s like those in cheese and the long "E" in my own name would have been a clue...It wasn't. (I was 11 or twelve years old before I could say either word out loud.)

Dyslexia I helped my friend learn to read with this, handicapp no more. She now sits around and reads. I love it. I believe it comes from the Adrenal glands. Mine is out of wack and I type backwards and strange letter combos why I think it is from the adrenal gland. RIP Nancy. Love you girlfriend. Cancer in esophagus, passed over at 34 yrears old.
