Amazing to see foreigners talking about this company. This car is sadly obscure (at least in the city where I live) and most of young folks in Brazil never heard about Puma. There's a man in my neighborhood that owns what I believe is a Puma GTE, it's yellow and it looks new, you can tell that man loves his car!

Given the choice of the motor, I don't think it makes sense to claim this company was aiming at becoming a rival to Ferrari and Lamborghini, that simply makes no sense. It would rather be in the same category as the Alfa Romeo Spider, the Opel GT and the Datsun Z. Although I guess the performances of these 3 cars all would be better than that of the Puma with such a small and underpowered motor. The Puma was more about looks and an affordable price. It had quite a nice design for sure, while not being a match at all for Ferrari or Lamborghini either.

I owned a 1981 Puma GTI. A very nice car if not over six feet tall. Mine had a sun roof which gave a little more headroom. It ran a 1600 cc Volkwagen engine with twin carbs. Unfortunately obtaining air-cooled Volkswagen parts not from China was difficult. The carb rebuild kits from China did not like the 10% alcohol based fuel in my area and the engine would start to run richer as the o-rings deterioated after about 400 to 500 miles. After two sets of twin carb kits from a Volkswagen supplier in California and several carburettor rebuild kits I sold the car before it reached 500 miles and began to run richer.

A correction in the video, the Puma GTB S2 did not use the air-cooled VW mechanics but rather the mechanics of the Opala 6 cylinders positioned in the front of the vehicle and with rear wheel drive, the difference between the GTB and the GTB S2 was that the GTB used the 4100 engine with 141 horsepower and mechanical tappets and the GTB S2 used a newer version, the 250S, which had 171 horsepower and hydraulic tappets originally, but many of the owners of both models improved the performance of both models with better valve commands, adding a higher flow rate carb, and often more than one carburetor, I got to drive a GTB S2 with competition command and 3 ADF carburetors and due to the reduced weight, as it was a fiberglass vehicle, the "animal" was brutal, leaving imported vehicles with almost twice its power eating dust. Here in Brazil, at the time, it was the dream of consumption, since imported cars were only for those who had a lot of money, as imports were prohibited for most citizens due to the high taxes and the difficulty with documentation, so only the very rich or those linked to the government could afford this luxury, I personally had a 1979 Puma GTE with a 1700cc engine and it ran well, not to mention that it was excellent on curves.

i think there is a mistake in your video. at 5:17, you state that the Puma GTB S2 used the VW Brasilia chassis. the S2 was basically a facelifted/updated version of the original GTB, and both models shared the same production line for a year. both had the same chassis and engine from the Chevrolet Opala using the 4.1 inline 6. S2 is Série 2.

I don't think GTB S2 uses VW chassis. GTB S2 uses heavy engines like Opala's 4100 mL inline-6 mounted ahead. So it's almost impossible to fit it in a VW frame. So I i think GTB has its own tubular chassis, once Opala is actually unibody, instead of body+frame.

The video wrongly says cubic inches. But it's cubic centimetres. Most DKW 2 stroke engines were something like 0.981 Litres, or 981 cm³, or 981 mL. What most people call 1.0. A few of them were a bit less. Something like 900 cm³ in kinda jeep FWD in its cheap version. Despite its low displacement, it could be tunned (if I remember) up to 100hp and Puma DKW could be pretty fast, being in circuits faster than Willys Interlagos (Renault Dalphine) that used a good 1.6 L, 4 stroke engine that stayed in Brazilian market up to the and of century in cars like Ford Escort.
