THE SECRET GARDEN starring Colin Firth, Julie Walters and Dixie Egerickx is a new take on the beloved classic novel of the same name written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Set in England during a new time period in 1947, the film follows a young orphan girl who, after being sent to live with her uncle, discovers a magical garden on the grounds of his estate. Marc Munden is directing the script, which was adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne. David Heyman (Harry Potter franchise, Paddington 1,2) and Rosie Alison (Paddington 1 ,2) are producing and Jane Robertson (The Danish Girl, Bridget Jones’s Baby) is co-producing. StudioCanal’s Ron Halpern, Didier Lupfer, and Dan MacRae are executive producers. STXfilms will distribute THE SECRET GARDEN in the U.S. and Canada.

Everyone’s so eager to tear this movie apart. I went to watch it on a whim, haven’t even heard of the book before or seen the trailer. It’s a very touching movie, made with so much love that seeps out of every detail for those who know how to see them. Movies by books shouldn’t and can’t be literal adaptations, they are also art in their own right. Kudos to everyone who made this, there is so much love brought to life in it, and for those who attack it, don’t let your hearts harden too much. Share your love for the material with the movie authors, dislike it if you will but know that if someone gave so much of their life and effort into it, they too must adore the material.

I can't imagine any other version of TSG being more magical than the 1993 version. It helped me to appreciate gardens and flowers and taught me what wick was and meant! As an adult I have been trying to recreate my own, small, secret garden. It's magic and heartwarming version never left my memory. @LiveLocallyNow
@LiveLocallyNow 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, the 1993 version was haunting enough on its own. Almost like there was a ghost presence - Colin's crying made it sound scary, Mary's dream about her mother, Archibald's dream about his wife which brought him home, the kid's fire ceremony, the abandoned wing of the house, and the swing constantly blowing in the breeze by itself, swinging. Oh man, I get chills thinking about it now, it was all just perfectly eerie enough! Perfect for the mind of a 10 year old child, scared and alone in a big, drafty, and unfamiliar house, with no one to properly love them. The house did feel dead and haunted, and you got the feeling that with the reuniting of Colin and his father, the garden alive, and Mary added, everything became pleasant again. The unhappy ghost is now resting in peace. :-)

@Buffyslyth Because some of them were so good that Holywood busy bodies think a good idea to give them 'another chance' (the 'Chance', in this case, is for their pockets.) It's a proof of lack of creativity by screenplay authors as much as the big bosses of movies industry, who cannot come up with anything more interesting than remaking a movie - which was a hit in its own time - overloaded with special effects and some sort of artificial fantasy. Perhaps in one or another case there is a good result, and this very remake of 'The Secret Garden' might have something beautiful and interesting to watch, nevertheless such kind of 'adaption' as SicParvisMagna123 mentions above, in truth is nothing more than stealing the fantastic idea of Frances Hodgson Burnett's wonderful book and giving it a 'makeover'. Show your daughter the OG ones like the new adaptations have just been made for money like the OG ones were for money aswell but more for enjoyment and yes I honestly agree so much I really wish film makers today would stop washing movies with CGI and embrace what’s given to them rather than making things that aren’t real (also the gritty look is what I miss so much like film makers never use it anymore and that’s what made movies from the 90’s so nostalgic 😔)

Yes the 1993 version was definitely a masterpiece and also one of my most beloved movies. Still the point of new movie adaptations is to bring the story back to life, especially for younger generations and to discover maybe new aspects of the story that are relevant to our current time. New content won‘t take away the content we already have and love, so why not be open to it?:) But yea the trend to include CGI excessively in any new children’s movie is getting on my nerves, too, I won‘t lie.
@FPSmoto
@FPSmoto 10 ай бұрын
True, but I would argue that kids are probably already inundated with tv shows and movies that are already filled with CGI. Is it too much of an ask to have a kid sit down and watch a slightly more boring movie to change the way they look at movies? I certainly didn't have a solid grasp on these concepts when I was young, but having seen the 1993 version multiple times, I'd say it's one event in growing up that helped anchor me to the magic that is nature, as well as to better understand the dance between life and death. I think adults, at the very least, don't have a problem seeing past the fluff to get to the real content, but kids being so impressionable, it would seem that the added CGI was an attempt to dumb down the original story because movie execs think kids are incapable of understanding nuance or to gain an appreciation for the magic of nature. Still, I am open to seeing this newer film, and possibly the 1987 version since I read that Colin Firth was in that one as well.
@emmae6170

The 1987 Hallmark version will forever hold a special place in my heart. It's very interesting to see Colin Fifth playing Archibald Craven, considering he played the young adult Colin Craven in the Hallmark version. I'm not sure about this being the third imagining of the tale. Surely someone in Hollywood has an original screenplay to be produced. That's not saying it's not a story worth telling, however how many different versions have to be made?
@TheLadyk53
@TheLadyk53 4 жыл бұрын
It is such a good story, I have loved it and read it over and over since I was a girl. I never really get tired of seeing it. I too noticed that Collin Firth was in the old version as well. And to think the first time I saw it I had never even heard of Collin Firth! It was not until many years later while re-watching the video that I noticed it was him. I just re-read the book at Christmas time because I had bought it as a gift for my grand niece. There was also a movie version in 1949 with Margaret O'Brien which I found online to watch. They turned the robin into a raven! That was weird! I guess in those days they did not have the filming technology to do a tiny robin. I look forward to the new version just because I love the story but this trailer looks a bit too fantastical, I am afraid it might be disappointing. Sorry for going on and on but having been in isolation for so long now, I don't have many people to talk to, so I am rambling. LOL

I'm confused so you guys wanted to see the exact same thing when there is already a movie that is a perfect copy off the book. If that was true then their would be no point in the movie, that's why it has changed a little. To make it "The Secret Garden" ofc but to give you a little run for your money. I think that they have made this movie really good and you can't lie the quality was amazing. Yes the 1993 film was already perfect but give this a chance too. It may not be perfect but it sure was lovely. I give it a 9/10.

Well, I guess that is messed up already. The probability that the youngest generation may know the book and who wrote it (a most remarkable author Frances Hodgson Burnett was) is null. They go to the movies to watch such strange adaptations of originals and think this is it. The book is a timeless story of innocence and courage as much as love and friendship, but above all about the power of Nature. And THAT garden!... Absolutely gorgeous. The 1993 movie made a great adaption of the original story and all the actors and actresses were simply perfect for each role.

I literally laughed out loud at this trailer. It's just...so typically David Heyman, who, let's be honest, has become a kind of British Michael Bay. This has been dumbed down into "adults don't understand magic/beauty/fun and a cookie cutter orphan tomboy has to insert herself into an absurdly toxic and fantastical family situation." The graphics are overdone (what about the slow beauty of the moors?), the decay in the great house is comical, the story overdramatized for villains and destructive events, and the cinematography makes it look more like "A Series of Unfortunate Events" than a Frances Hodgson Burnett novel ever would. The source material is unrecognizable in this "adaptation." It should more accurately say, "loosely inspired by the timeless novel." The 1987 Hallmark adaptation, I think, is closest in heart to the characters and their growth in the novel (but the '93 version is fine minus Medlock being a villain). Derek Jacobi is the best.

This trailer is better than the last which caused so much uproar from those of us who adore that book, or the different dark and faithful older movies, most especially the 1949 version. Two main things that will make or break it for me personally; Colin Firth (who I adore in most instances) must actually seem angry and nasty in the beginning. He must portray hateful and distant and cold in a way that maybe he is not comfortable with as a person to sell the true transformative powers of a little quiet garden. He must not say hateful hurtful things and then make a sad or consiliatory face afterwards. AS with the house, it must be so dark, so dim and uninvested in any sort of future happiness that your blood runs cold just looking at its dark twisting passageways, same with Collin who must not show any redeeming qualities what so ever at first, almost beyond repair. That is a message, souls who are seemingly beyond repair, so damaged and injured and lonely that they can do nothing but increase that feeling in others. AS with MAry herself who at first is such a hateful nasty child,, demanding and prejudice. The dark and the hate and the anger itself has to be something felt in the bones, cold and sheer like a cliff. and in that way, the tiny peeps of color, the tiny scent of fresh air and blue sky; the little shards of green; then bird song; then untangled masses of flowers and ground cover, bit by bit that itself broadens into corners of the house and hearts. It is the story of opposites that brush up against each other. Like in painting, the delicious quality of simultaneous contrast. Colors on the oppostie of the color wheel that bring out the best in each other when place side by side. I want to give this film a chance. this trailer is better than the last.
