I used to freak out my friends decades ago when I ate candy wrapped in rice paper, and ate the paper. Anyway, I LOVE this and would PAY MORE for a product with this packaging. May it be available soon on a large scale.

Loved the video!! I especially enjoyed the part where you just sprayed saline solution on the gelatin extracted from seaweed, and it was as easy as that. Another comment, this is seriously a project I wish more countries would widely adopt, specially after finding out about the length of growth seaweed can make in a single day. Hemp also can be used to make "platic"-like items from its cellulose, which is biodegradable. Growing Hemp puts nutrients into soil and pulls out toxins. Hemp also acts as a deterrent to pests.

The first concern that my mind jumps to is the energy cost and money cost of producing this seaweed-based plastic replacement. You must take into account the total amount of energy it costs to produce a product, from the growing and harvesting of the seaweed, all the way to the transportation to actually get it onto the shelves. There's no point for major companies to adopt something such as this unless the cost to grow, harvest, produce, and transport it is lower than the current standard. At 9:34 , you mention how ease of recyclability is especially important for lower income countries. This is true. It is also true that those very same countries are tasked with producing the world's majority of products including plastic as a whole and aluminum. This requires energy to produce all these products. Energy requires money. And without money, your energy production (and therefore production as a whole) is severely reduced. In short, *money and energy are directly correlated.* These lower-income countries are exactly that, they have less money as a whole. Therefore, they turn to cheaper energy production methods for their typically much larger populations (China and India), which usually ends up being coal. This is why "green" energy methods are so hard to switch over to. Think about how much more money and energy itself it takes to mine, refine, and build batteries for all the solar and wind plants and electric vehicles than it costs to simply mine, transport, and burn coal. Wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear power all have much higher costs to produce the same output than the current coal standard these countries have become so dependent on. It's not sustainable, not as they are now. (This is also why I put "green" in quotations) Wind and solar are simply not as energy dense as natural gas or oil. I wish it weren't true, but it is. Until advancements in better battery technology, lower cost for material production, or general output of solar, wind, and other green energy methods are made to be more efficient and cheaper than the currently already cheap methods of using coal, natural gas, and oil, these megacorporations are never going to switch to "green" energy methods and plastic replacements anytime soon. All in all though, I enjoy watching your vids about all this new tech that is coming out. It's very informative and important to bring these otherwise brushed over tech and the people behind it to light. I hope to see it one day become a common replacement for the current standard.

Great video! I saw sorted food do a colab with nopla too. Brilliant company doing amazing things. So much info here I didn’t know too. I thought I was really on it with the recycling but I had no idea cardboard takeaway boxes were covered in plastic, and that plastic bottle could only be recycled a few times. How these companies get away with the amount of greenwashing that goes on is disgusting Love what you do, keep it up!

I just read that paper straws have “forever chemicals” PFAS (like Teflon) to make them water-resistant, so now that’s supposed to set up this big dilemma between paper straws and plastic straws. Why not waxed (non-petroleum wax, preferably) paper? Waxed paper used to be in all kinds of packaging, and for many things, it was fine. Yes, your ice cream sandwiches might not be so great if you kept them for half a year in the freezer, but would it kill you to just put them in a ziplock bag (which could be reused in most cases) when you got them home?

I'd heard about this but I had questions. So cool to have a more in depth look at it. In Puerto Rico we are having problems with the large amounts of sargassum on our coasts. Makes usually clear waters look brown and it stinks. Thankfully, we are finding uses for it! 7th graders found a way to make it a construction material (like concrete), and university students found a way to make it into filament for 3D printing! This is amazing!! I use seaweed in my gardening all the time. Love seeing new products from seaweed! Hemp is also another product that can be used has a plastic alternative and can be composted. Another way to help change the system is to invest in companies like this. Unfortunately, very few videos mention this or give links to companies that can be invested in. I would really have loved to see that mentioned in this video and seen a link to contact the company about any investment opportunities that may be available. Possibly, an idea for a future video? Looks good... holds liquids but instantly dissolves in mouth. How does that work? What if they get wet before going in mouth? Do they stick together when packaged together, and then tear? Is humidity a problem? rain? How strong are these packets? Do they bite open to release contents? Need LOTS more information about practicality.

The outside material is a little different to the inside, and it requires heat as well as liquid to dissolve. You can actually store the pods in water and they won't dissolve - so long as it's kept cool as well!

OOOOOoooo this is so Solarpunk I love it! Comment for the algo! Bamboo and hemp are great solutions to sustainable alternatives to tree made paper products as well. They are like the three sisters of sustainability. Kelp, Hemp and Bamboo call save the world. Oh I forgot, I own a Lomi kitchen composter and I highly recommend as It can turn bioplastics like NOTPla into garden compost along with other kitchen scraps. I'm not affiliated with the company. That Seaweed ( Macrocystis pyrifia) that the Prince was holding is now not growing in Australia, or Sthn. California. At the same time something Globally wiped it all out! There used to be masses of it, blocking the movement of small boats, now NONE!. Efforts to replant it with divers didn't work the first time, & they are trying again in Tasmania, Australia.

First the UK has to get sorted obnoxious uniformed council recycle center watchers who fine citizens for dropping off their recyclables when the bins haven't been emptied in over a month, citing them for fly tipping! Outrageous and discourages people from ever even attempting to do the right thing. Simply obnoxious.

The frustrating thing about platsic bottles is that 99% of the time - outside of disaster relief - you dont even need to consume those things. They are either sodas and artificial juices that are terrible for your health or water that you can just carry in your own bottle. The whole problem shouldnt even exist!

Hi Sam! Great video! I have 2 questions aboht this innovation: 1. Does the packaging taste salty at all? Im not a fan of seaweed because of the sodium but im wondering if they remove it? 2. Does the gelatin membrane not make it fully plant-based if gelatin comes from a protein found in animals?

Heya! 1. They manage to remove the fishy / salty smell from it in the extraction process 2. It’s fully plant-based too to gelatin he’s referring to isn’t animal gelatin 🙏🏼
