The films of Studio Ghibli often refuse to be categorized as either fantasy or realism. Rather, films like Ponyo exist in the liminal space of Magical Realism, where everyday banalities are filled with wonder. For Ponyo, incorporating the Magical Realist tradition is a crucial ingredient to the film’s environmentalist message.
