They work for the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, who keeps and updates the Cup. They actually have 3 Stanley Cups: the original from 1893, the Presentation Cup (the one that is the Cup seen on TV), and the Permanent Cup (spelling corrected) that is displayed when the Presentation Cup is out. Also the NHL does not own the Cups, nor does the Hockey Hall of Fame. It is owned by two trustees (per Lord Stanley’s wishes).

What makes it the best trophy in all of sports is how there is only one. Something about there being 52 Vince Lombardi trophies cheapens the impact. The Stanley cup has that history.

Thanks God, the NHL does not own the Cup! ;-) It belongs to the Hockey Hall of Fame, a non-profit corporation that exists in order to honour and preserve the history of the game of ice hockey.

@Red Pilled Whitey The NHL does not own the cup. The NHL PLAYS for the cup. The cup was purchased by the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston and whatever the Governor General does, is done on behalf of the Canadian people. The Canadian people own the Stanley cup.

Off-season : 100 days in the hands of the winning team. Regular : at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, which I believe is the ultimate owner of the trophy. The Cup is also often shown in different events here and everywhere during the «regular» season.

Duck Man3D5 actually there is 3 Stanley Cups. The original which is now on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame. The presentation cup which is the one presented to the team when they win it. And the replica cup which is displayed at the hockey hall of fame when the presentation cup is not available for display
