The Secret of Great DX7 Woodwinds

Since the DX7 oboe patch that was in the popular Off The Matrix demo was not included in the banks, I received a number of emails requesting it. This video will explain how to set up the oboe patch by beginning with the Clarinet patch.

That would be awesome! I understand a little bit of eg bias affecting operators according to the amod amount, but not really how to adjust it well. I've played around with a breath controller bank by patchman music, but I like your woodwind sounds better. I just haven't managed to adapt them for my EWI. @@offthematrix5310

That would be amazing. I like the tone of your wind instruments more than the ones that I got from Patchman music, but I can't figure out how to make them respond as naturally to my EWI. @@offthematrix5310

Absolutely blown away by your FM skills. Would have been even better to play the patch after each adjustment so as a viewer you could hear the evolution of the patch. Otherwise it's a bit like black magic. :)

FM has so much potential even on DX7 mk.1. I afraid to imagine what you could do with FS1R FM/FS monster synth.

V nice. Have you considered using dexed for patch demoing? It's a bit more visual than the old Yamaha displays. Don't know if it works with dx7ii tho

DX7 II is 100% compatible with the DX7 I. The only difference are cleaner 16 bit DACs (vs 12 bit in DX7 I) and some other features (some models had the ability to have two part multitimberality, some have floppy disks etc.)

Fantastic sounds! Thanks so much for explaining the oboe and clarinet patches. How did you get the noise from the ops 1 and 2 stack of algorithm 1? I thought the only way to get noise on a DX7 was to use the feedback operator with maximum feedback?

Since the clarinet really didn't need the windy tone, I used algorithm 1. You are right, to get the noise it would need to be algorithm 2 which has feedback for operator 1and 2.

Great videos! We were trading comments on another video. Can you imagine if we had 3 stacks (towers) of 4 OPs each and with feedback in each that can also feedback into other stacks? Do you have patches for a Crash and Ride cymbal?

I've worked on a ride cymbal but I'm not happy with it yet. But I did create a closed hi hat on the V50 that sounds good. I need to program it for the DX7.

@@offthematrix5310 I hear ya, cymbals are very complex. I can get a pseudo wide band sound, but its missing that je ne se quoi, and the attack seems to need more stacks.

Hello friend! Are your V50/TQ5 patches compatible with the YS100? Do you have audio examples and a list of patch names anywhere for me to listen to?

Yes, The TQ5 bank is compatible with the YS100. Many of the patches are 4 operator versions of the new DX7 patches. In this review, the TQ5 plays patches that were created on the TX81z. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIO7pqKwjtyopqc

@@offthematrix5310Brilliant, I'll pick those up from you at some point in the near future then :D Do you happen to know a good editor I can create new sounds from scratch for the YS100, or how I can look at how some of the presets are put together? The easy edit is rather limiting.
