The Secret Path: In The Classroom | Short Docs

Gord Downie's "The Secret Path" tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, a young boy who died trying to get home from residential school in 1966. It's been taught in classrooms across Canada this year.
Daisy and Pearl Wenjack, Chanie's sisters, visit a school in Toronto where the children have a special surprise for the family.

I read and listened to the story and even I have to admit that it was a bit much for me to handle. Knowing it was a true story of a boy's suffering really hit me for some reason or another I can't seem to understand. But having it in the classroom? I think that's perfect. Having kids exposed to something real that they can understand in their own terms, both visually and with music, would help them grow to try to understand other complicated issues and sympathize with others. Thank you, CBC, and thank you Downie and Lemire.

I've been teaching grade 8s for two years and include The Secret Path in September. Honestly, what hits hardest with my students are two things: for all of them, it's the fact that Chanie was the same age as them, and for about a third of them, it's hinting at the things that their grandparents and parents don't talk about with them because it's still too painful. A student of mine says she wants to know in order to understand her family, but it's something she knows they will never discuss.

Once the children grow up and are able to think for themselves, I am quite sure they will be astounded to learn that the story that is being forced upon is a lie and that the real truth is available for anyone who really wants to honor this poor child's life.

And I am NOT going to be celebrating our country.this July 1st. I wish the whole country would be canceling Canada Day. It is THE most hypocritical thing to do while our country s in mourning. It is a travesty that the story of Chanie's life and tragic death was so egregiously fictionalized as to bear hardly an iota of truth. It is even sadder that people swallow it up without doing any due diligence of their own.
