“The Stranger” is the first full chapter and song of The Secret Path. Adapted from Gord Downie’s album and Jeff Lemire’s graphic novel, The Secret Path chronicles the heartbreaking story of Chanie Wenjack’s residential school experience and subsequent death as he escapes and attempts to walk 600 km home to his family.
The film will be broadcast by CBC in an hour-long commercial-free television special on Sunday, October 23 at 9pm (9:30 NT) and streamed worldwide at cbc.ca/secretpath at 9pm ET.
The ten-song album and 88-page graphic novel by Jeff Lemire are both available for pre-order at secretpath.ca

I remember the CBC doing a series on The Greatest Canadians of all time. It was open to votes and at the top of the list were incredible people like Terry Fox and Tommy Douglas. Gord Downie now belongs on that list. Dying from brain cancer and spending the end of his life raising awareness for the victims of Canada's worst atrocities... For me, that puts him right up there with the greatest Canadians.

Both of my parents are Residential School Survivors, I'm happy to see more attention being brought to this absolutely atrocious period of Canadian history. They are both my hero's for surviving and becoming strong people who made something of themselves, even though they had EVERYTHING taken away from them, including their culture, language, identity, family, etc.

Unfortunately people are more concerned with the symptoms of problems rather than the cause of the problems. In my opinion, the Anishinabe went about exchanging those things created or fashioned by the hands of men in exchange for those things, those spirit energy of life created by the Most High. When the Anshinabe slaughtered tens of millions of beaver so Vatican could drain the land this set in play a curse for several generations which included the Residential Schools as punishment.

Rest in peace to all the kids who passed, to the man who created this song, and to Channie Wenjack. I hope they are all receiving the life they deserve in heaven, if only this world wasn’t dark.

And she isn’t the only one doing so. Thank you so much, truly from the bottom of my heart. Every. Single. Kid that went to Residential Schools will ALWAYS be remembered. Gord, you left a very positive message as you left this world. And till this day, yes you completely changed this Country. We are all born for a reason, to do something good to the world. And Gord you overexcited those limits in an amazing way. You truly changed millions of people’s lives and how we live our life daily. Thank you so so much, and rest in peace. 💐 And also to prove that, the reason my teacher and thousands of others teach that is thanks to you. ❤️ Rest Peacefully all of you. 🇨🇦🙏❤️💐

This was and atrocity the Canadian Government kept hidden. I'm so happy that with people like Gord Downie and others light is now being she'd on it. It now needs to be blown wide open as so many indigenous wen going missing. It's time Canada, the Churches and all provinces admit their part in this. We can't live in the past but going forward needs an incentive. This is a generational offense that needs to be righted.

To anyone who is wondering what happens in "the stranger" its abt a kid who was sent away to a residential school for a long time in 1966. He was not able to see his family at all or even speak in his own language. Chanie Wenjack ran away his school to go home to Opasi post which was 600 KM to go home. Chanie REALLY tried to attempt to go home but sadly was not able to go home. Chanie is a 12 year old boy. When Chanie was in his school the nuns had no choice but cut most of his hair and shower his head and had a guard for bedtime check. Chanie remembered some of his memories with his dad which were sad.😔😔😔😔😔😔😔 Please wear Orange on the 30th of september to remember what the people who were sent to residential schools. Chanie wenjack had sadly passed away when he tried his hardest to come home. WE LOVE U CHANIE

I just found this song and listened to it 3 times over and over again and each time it made me cry, I didn't look at the screen the first time but his words had such an impact on me and then the video made me think of my grandpa and my aunties and all my family that's been to residential school and still affected by it also makes me think of my family that didn't go but is still severely affected by it and then all the other people like my family. It hurts but finding out all the reasons behind their actions helps me love them when they do bad things. Makes me think of who we could of all been, the knowledge we could of had, and how beautiful the land would still look. If they just didn't accept them but ancestors weren't like them. they were kind and trusting and had no idea what kind of horrible people they were dealing with and all the horrible horrible things that would happen after.

ryan stockie It was about 45 minutes of Gord performing with the movie playing in the background, followed by a short video documenting his trip to Ogoki Post and then after, Mike Downie spoke about the project with the Wenjack family. It might be slightly different for the Toronto show because Ottawa was the premiere. Either way, I would say get a ticket if you can. It will be a fantastic emotional show, no matter what.

Breaks my heart how the First Canadians were treated especially knowing how the opened their hearts to the first settlers/explorers taught them agriculture and survival through the harsh Winters etc etc etc!!!!! Like best friends in a new land, perfect neighbors, and people driven by family love, respecting nature and living life right. The way they were repaid makes me Sick with Colonial fkn Genocide. I'm Greek,German and Ukrainian I know not if my heritage contributed to this as the English,French, Dutch and Spanish did but I do know it really doesn't matter!!!! I'm more than proud of Gord for telling this tale in all its ugly truth and unacceptability. I knew for a long while about these Evil Residential Schools , Colonialism and early genocides. I have been Blessed emensly with a full blooded Cree lady the love of my life and a lifetime of great friends who just happened to be First Nations! Now everyone knows thanks to Gords courage and conscience and there is no denying it for any remaining racists!!!! I pray for reconciliation not for the normal reasons but because I believe First Nations ( Canadians) are amongst the best people I've ever known. Their family ties and communal respect touch my heart. There love of nature and Mother Earth inspirational BUT MAINLY because I believe it's the First Nations around the earth that can save the earth!!! Because they deserve joy, peace and prosperity but more so they deserve our love after all in the beginning all they did was love, help and accept us!!!!!! And I don't know about you but that's the kind of folk my heart loves Big Time!!!! We owe them Big Time for uncountable reasons and we need them they are the integral backbone of mankind Period!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU GORD!!!! Thank you for a lifetime of awesome music and your love and compassion for ALL Canadians

Gord Downie was, and IS a proud Canadian, and a TRUE Canadian. He knows about what happened up there in those Residential Schools. And spent his last years doing what he could to raise awareness just like we are. When we have Canada Day, it's important that we do not forget the dark side of this country's history. There's no pride in what happened to those children all those years ago. But there's no shame in healing from it as much as we can. Even with what's happening now. So I'm celebrating Canada Day for Canadians like Gord. And I won't forget the dark side of this country either. That's what we should do.

Rest in peace Gord Downie and Chanie wenjack watching this give me goosebumps and shivers I don't know why it's quite sad in shocking and annoying and angry to hear what native people went through at the hands of the government of Canada and I know they were ran by nuns that were catholic I believe let's be honest God and Jesus Christ would not support this at all they'd be ashamed at all the people that started the residential schools I just feel bad and I think Canada as a nation should bring more awareness to residential schools in what native people went through which Canada is slowly doing by making national holidays and apologies and reconciliations 🙏

Gord Downie will forever be remembered for his kindness and loving nature. In his remaining days, not knowing how many there would be, he created a foundation and took up the cause of mending the divide within his country he so loved. One of his final acts was to give of himself to a cause that others wouldn't even acknowledge until he got involved. The epitome of selflessness and a level of love rarely seen in public figures. The example for us all on what it means to be humble, kind and giving. There will never be another quite like him.

Foster care system is the new Indian residential school. Taken away and not allowed to see my parents or sisters or brother fear about courts and police. Put in a home hour an half away. My legal guardian is social worker. Prayed a pond my foster Dad and mother. I still live in terrible trauma. That’s what happen to me.

They simply never stop it seems. They found a hidden type of weapon in foster care though, they can exert as much control as they want in the name of “safety” for the children

My mother & all of her sisters & brothers had to go to the residential school in Long lac, never in my life have I heard about so many horrific things that happened there.. I'm so lucky I didnt end up in one of those schools since I was born in 1989. I feel so much sorrow for my people. May God Bless & keep safe all those who died & those who are still suffering to this day.. I love you my fellow indigenous native Americans. ❤ The priests & nuns who tortured & killed those kids can go to hell.. I dont need to go to church to pray to God & show I love him. I can pray to him Anywhere in the world. 🕊

Happened a lot. In Buffalo ny too Google Magdalene Laundries.. they did it in Ireland. Buffalo and Canada. Trafficking children and young mothers. All church based government funded. Child trafficking didnt start with Epstein. Its not new to government. Its always been that way. And not one person was held accountable.

Iy sucks to grow up in Buffalo ny. Being a kid like oh god another tragically hip song.... Thats going back to the 90s and early 2000s. To now being an adult. To sadly realizing how great he was. Realizing i missed out. Ill never get to see him live. But im happy he got to expose this and bring light to this before he passed. Man he really was a head by a century huh? I only got to like his music as i got older. The more i lived the more his music made sense. Sucks it came when he passed away.
