Electric vehicles need to be more than just eco-friendly - they have to be more chic, convenient and affordable than their gas-powered alternatives, says sustainability leader Cynthia Williams. She explores what it'll take for an electric revolution to succeed in the US, calling on corporations, policy leaders, investors and more to collaborate in unprecedented ways.

Infrastructure changes should include moving refueling delivery from public stations to places where vehicles are parked for longer periods of time - residences, workplaces, hotels/motels, etc. That doesn't mean there will no longer be a need for refueling stations for long-distance travel, but with battery chemistry changes now being explored, we may have "all-day" batteries that could last 600 or so miles, basically enough miles for most drivers to want to stop overnight when making a long-distance trip. Public refueling every 50 miles may not make sense.

I feel like the thing that could maybe take us and the internet to a better place is less hatred and war (on people's religions, bodies, rights, and freedoms). I feel like the pandemic has emboldened people to speak their minds and to spew hatred without any consideration for others. People seem so much more focused on themselves than they once did and I think repairing needs to come from leading with love, kindness, and a regard for the well-being of others.

Cynthia seems like a sweetheart and her message of moving over to EVs is 100% correct. The problem is the big 3 domestic automakers are pulling the plug, so to speak, on their EV cars and trucks. Why? because these products are less competitive than the leading ones, and they require new technologies that are too costly to build. We're not even going to talk about the dealership network that is gauging the consumers. Keep your eyes opened and ears peeled. I wish the information I get is wrong and the Ford and GM will build and sell millions of their EVs and stop killing us with Co2 emissions. Meanwhile, Tesla is the way to go.

This is promising. However, we must also build battery recycling and disposal facilities that protect the environment. Stepping back further, we must also address the human trafficking, dangerous work conditions, and low pay of the mineral mining industry from which the battery materials are extracted. If the entire industry is not progressing to improve both the environment and the lives/livelihoods of the workers, it’s a continuous failure.

I can’t believe how much americans hate on EV’s. I kinda understand, the ease of gassing up in a few minutes, not having to plan around the charging, can’t get as many miles out of an EV as a gas car. But EV’s are not for everyone yet…but i’m sure they’ll become better and longer ranges and the early adopters (mostly europe) are guiding us!

I love this presentation and I love the optimism. What concerns me gravely is that the wole industry has the same vision and it is short sighted. A brief mention is made here of urban sites and lower income households but that's not where any of the US manufacturers are pitching. So little thought has been put into the practicality of charging points. When was the last time you spent 3 hours plus in a gas station? How can people living in apartments use on street charging when they don't have a garage? How many charges to make a major road trip, even with a range of over 300 miles? There are so many huge voids in the planning down which the industry can plunge. Battery swapping is the ONLY way to resolve these issues and Nobody is taking it seriously.

@@mbergamin16 No grid is 100% coal-based. You get CO2 benefits according to how clean the local grid is. Even a coal plant at 33% to 37% efficiency is better than an internal combustion engine that is 20% to 30% efficient (but not by much). Natural gas generators are about 60% efficient. Wind turbines are around 90% efficient when the wind blows but their performance should really be measured in other ways. Coal-fired power plants currently provide 37% of global electricity, and 18% in the US. Natural gas-fired power plants provide around 20% of global electricity and 38% in the US. Burning natural gas generates far less CO2 than coal. A tiny amount of electricity comes from diesel generators. Nuclear and renewables provide the balance and these generate very little CO2.

Most of an EV battery is graphite, nickel, aluminium and copper. If you are thinking of the lithium, most of that is mined in Chile and Australia. Most of the Congo’s cobalt is VASTLY exported to China. Cobalt free batteries already exist and are being more and more used. CATL, China’s biggest battery manufacturer, has already released a sodium-ion EV car battery. The PlayStation 2 had a lot of cobalt too and it was widely reported by the media then too but that can’t get in the way of that gaming nostalgia right? Stop pretending to care.

Here are 18 reasons why you really need an electric car: 1. You’re a Tolstoy enthusiast who’s never quite conquered the monumental War and Peace. Fear not, for that long charging queue becomes your literary sanctuary where you can immerse yourself in 1,225 pages of Russian opulence while your electric steed gains its much-needed energy boost. 2. Fine dining at Chiswick, Margaret, and Quay is a given, but have you truly lived until you’ve sampled the delights of the local servo? Post-War and Peace, dive into the exquisite world of slurpees, gristly meat pies, and try-hard coffee at the gas station. Breakfast and lunch might just be a charging queue away. YOLO. 3. Forget Bill Gates and his private jets; your guilty pleasure is the toasty warmth of a winterised garage. Electric cars, much like their owners, detest the cold. Embrace the synergy by parking your electric chariot in a heated garage-a warm welcome indeed. 4. Having dabbled in the vaccine, insect, and windfarm markets, your financial portfolio is diverse, and now you’re eyeing a substantial tax break. The depreciation of your EV will outpace its traditional counterparts so why not amass a fleet to elegantly trim that hefty annual tax bill? 5. Hitchhiking adventures or solitary contemplation on a deserted country road, anyone? Electric cars need to charge frequently. So if you’re going on a long journey, there’s a chance you may not make it to the next EV charging station. This is where War and Peace also comes in handy. Advertisement - Story continues below 6. Virtue signalling ascends to new heights as the Tesla logo joins forces with needles and any flag that isn’t your own country. The EV isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s your declaration of values to the world. 7. You have a longing for Victorian times and it’s not just the taxidermy and corsets. Children learned the value of money in those times. Maybe sending them down a coal mine wasn’t ideal but better than being stuck up a chimney and having someone light a fire. Child slave labour is alive and well today in Africa where children are used to mine cobalt by hand in order to produce the 60 pounds of cobalt needed for one EV battery. 8. Unveil your inner Victorian Goth with a penchant for blackouts, cold baths and for the truly avant-garde, cockroach milk. Electric cars may shine but the allure of darkness prevails in this world of renewables. 9. Coal mining is so pre-COVID. No, it’s lithium, cobalt, graphite, and aluminium all the way. A single EV battery needs 30 pounds of lithium, 60 pounds of cobalt, 130 pounds of graphite, and roughly 500 pounds of steel aluminium, manganese, plastic and other materials. Happy. Happy. Joy. Joy. 10. You’ve always wanted to live in a permanent Disneyland-believing that electric cars have zero emissions. California awaits. 11. Are you concerned about pollution emissions in first-world countries? Just shift the burden to the third world where toxic substances required for EV batteries become an unavoidable reality. 12. Anything a diesel Mercedes C220 D can do your Tesla Model 3 can do better e.g. emit 11 to 28 percent more CO2 over the lifespan of the Mercedes. 13. You’re a great delegator and will happily delegate power regarding your movements to the government. Of course, they should be allowed to turn your car off at any time because SCIENCE. 14. Do you live in an inner city Teal electorate where electricity prices skyrocketing become inconsequential? Teal and Tesla go hand in hand. That $5,000 power bill is a small price to pay for coolness. And the seventh needle in your profile seals the deal for the ultimate in virtue signalling nonchalance. 15. MI5 dreams come true with a tracking device worthy of James Bond. And the cherry on top? Celebrating the gender and potential trans identity of 007 while cruising in your Tesla. 16. Do you have a soft spot for China? You can acknowledge their prowess in lithium processing 40 percent of the world’s raw lithium and dominating the market with an 80 percent share. 17. For you the intricacies of how the EV charges and the origin of coal-fired electricity remain a mystery. It’s battery-operated and that’s all that matters. 18. And then there are those with aerostatiophobia, an affliction not to be taken lightly. The genuine fear of gas stations, it seems is a reality. While it’s unfortunate to miss out on the gourmet treats these stations offer, the silver lining of a battery-operated car is the blissful avoidance of gas station visits altogether. After all, who needs to confront their fears when the hum of an electric charge is music to your tax-saving ears?

And what about floods? Or even just heavy rain with an inch of water on the road? I have driven through flood waters, because I had no choice. Exhaust and intake were 'vertical' - we did not have a name for it, but it was meant for off road and situations such as flood. How do we do any off this with electrical vehicles? I'm sure it will be understood and fixed, but it's not a talking point right now except among people stranded, with vehicles on fire, in various flood situations. Seriously. The talk was fine Cynthia but there needs to be reality about all of this, including charging station locations, cost of the vehicle, production capability (or lack thereof) for these vehicles.... It's the future. But everyone wants it without real planning. Good luck. Don't be mad at me. But I don't care anyway.

When you run out of gas, you fill up and drive away. When your EV runs out of electricity, you must wait to recharge right? Do all the EV charging stations work off of solar or fossil fuel? When my battery needs to be replaced, how much does it cost? Who pays for it?
@battery_wattage
@battery_wattage Ай бұрын
1. Running out of gas is a rare occurrence and usually caused from taking high risk. The same can be said for an EV. If running out of gas is not an issue because you don’t take big risks or make bad decisions, running out of charge is not going to be an issue. If you do run out of charge, it would need to be towed or charged enough to reach a charge station. 2. It depends. Some do run 100% off of renewable while others run 100% off fossil fuels. Keep in mind that even though you power an EV on 100% coal (one of the most inefficient forms of energy production which is increasingly becoming a minority), an EV is still more efficient and adds less net emissions compared to gas from drilling to exhaust. 3. 10k-30k depending on the car you purchased. This will go down as battery technology improves. If we take battery wear data from many Model 3s and Ys, they still have over 80% remaining battery capacity after 200k miles. Keep in mind that a battery is still perfectly drive-able down to 50% remaining capacity. That is out of warranty what you would pay. Many EVs have 100k-150k mile warranties, and any defect in a battery would show itself within that mileage which would be payed by the manufacturer. The average scrap in the US is 200k miles while most EVs with good battery chemistries are still perfectly drive able at that mileage. Let’s say you get 60% remaining capacity and want a new battery; that would most likely happen after 300k miles. Most people who have a major issue with their gas car after 200k miles would rather buy a different car than spend far less the price of getting a new battery in an EV. You would most likely want to send in your car for recycling and buy a new one than get a new battery.

This makes a $10,000-$12,000 battery pack only a little more costly than the two $4,000 engines you would likely need in the same 22 years. And you might need three engines over 37 years, in which case it’s really the same price. Also consider in a couple years when the same EV battery pack falls to $6,000 or $7,000 and much less further out to 2030.

Another sad ad. Why has TED become a source of political hype and nonsense? This is a joke.

Most likely the worst Ted talk I have listened to along with that one mother trying to victimize herself because her son did a school shooting. On a very different level of course but just as bad.

@@Powerhouse08 EV’s are probably the worst manufacturing process for the planet, of any consumer product in existence. The idea that they are some how more sustainable or eco friendly is an absolute lie. The lithium mining for the batteries is so extremely damaging to the environment, more damaging than the production of normal vehicles and their emissions over a life time. And to make it worse most battery replacements (a common replacement in EV’s) are so insanely expensive that often the cars are just marked as totaled and sent to a junk yards decades earlier than conventional cars (check out what happened in France when they tried to change all public transportation into EV’s, less than a decade later they have thousands of cars in a “graveyard” just left in a field.) If that’s not enough we can also talk about where the power in the charging station comes from because it’s not solar powered (which also has a harmful manufacturing process) it’s not from nuclear power (which is the only sustainable power that offsets its manufacturing impact) it’s mostly fossil fuels; but instead of being used in your very efficient car they are now being burned by less efficient power plants. EV’s may one day bring a more sustainable future but right now they are one of the most destructive things on market. This is Tesla advertising disguised as “a sustainable future” Ted talk. The real answer to a more carbon neutral world today is to buy less new stuff (manufacturing is 90% of global emissions) buy an old car drive it until it is unrepairable then repeat. It’s better for the environment than mining lithium or industrial burning of fossil fuel or creating EV graveyards. Same goes for upgrading your phone every year for that matter. This is probably one of the most disingenuous Ted talks you’ll hear, it’s a pure lie.

If you think cars are more efficient than just about anything I don't think I can trust a word you say. ICE cars are horrendously inefficient. @@dumbestguyinspace

@dumbestguyinspace Extreme hyperbole without proof might feel good to write, but it is not truth. All the pro fossil fuel propaganda you just wrote has been debunked over and over and over again, but your faith based thought doesn't negate fact. No, lithium mining is not worse than oil mining. Also, alternative ways of storing electricity are being developed. Gasoline has no such alternatives. Many people put solar on their house or buy solar power generation from the grid to charge their cars. Tesla and other manufacturers use 100% solar to manufacture. Tesla, for example, produces so much electricity from solar that they net meter excess electricity to the grid. As far as used cars, I bought my 100% electric car used. Why assume that problems can never be solved, so why even try? Because your agenda is pro oil. Americans used to think there is nothing we can't do. We can even put people on the moon if we put our minds to it. Now, too many Americans are convinced that progress is just too hard, so we should just give up and keep burning the planet.

And too much of it traps too much heat causing disruption in the watercycle and weather patterns which could cause ecological damage and effect the economy in a negative way. By your logic sugar is good because it provides fuel for the body to burn so more sugar is good yeah? No you muppet, it causes diabetes. Please think before making dumb comments like that

Seems there is a shortage of Co2. Its brilliant for plant growth and sustaining life on earth. It gives us bubbles in our beers and fizzy drinks. When holding ypur breath for long periods you increase Co2 in body. This is good. It helps keep blood alkaline. Whoever claimed Co2 is bad for us is a complete idiot.
