I've been down part of this path myself (not producing a product to sell, but making my own aprons). For me, (and it's a personal preference), I prefer shoulder straps that cross at the back, instead of a neck strap. This came about using heavier leather aprons in the blacksmiths forge, but I liked it so much there, my kitchen aprons are now of the same design. I find the neck strap can result in neck strain (on heavier aprons) after a while.

Yea, I’ve noticed that Korea basically only uses the crossback style, in particular the ones with really wide straps which distributes the load to make it as comfortable to wear as possible. (I used to wear one of the neck style when I worked at dominos as a kid and it was awful, they weren’t even that heavy, the neck strap just digs into your neck.) I feel like if you are making a product you need to look at how Germany, Korea and Japan does it first. If there is an optimization they’ve probably already thought of it, and everyone living in that country probably adopted it already.

me too i've had so much neck issues with the apron weight and the fact the apron neck support rubs on ur skin that I almost never wear an apron. I would definitely welcome an apron that goes over the shoulders.

as a chef of 20 years i can see a few things that make it a no from me. First the flat colour. it will show stains easily (as you can see with the dirty one you show), ive always preferred butchers stripe for this reason (its also the reason chefs pants are checkered). How will the leather and buckles hold up to washing? The buckles are also a concern with heat (although this is a small concern). The pocket low on the waist will fill up with scraps, flour, and any other spills fast. Hip pockets facing backwards slightly would be a much better choice The pocket also slightly negates one of the reasons to wear an apron, safety. a hot spill on a flat apron will flow down onto the floor but you have a nice pocket to catch it in (again this is a small concern). a tight chest pocket with section stitched in for things like tweezer, pen, spoon etc would be useful and lastly the price. i think its a bit of a swing and miss with this one

There's also the loose fabric between the legs that can get caught on things, or still get flour on your pants when it turns inside out. I would hate having my towel in a fixed position, and not be able to move it front to back. Thick canvas means it's going to be heavy, which you will feel on your neck after an 11 hour workday. Of course if you only spend an hour or two in the kitchen it will probably matter less. The overall look of the apron makes me think of a mechanic and not a chef. It doesn't look professional. I think a chef apron really is one of those cases where less is more.

I started about 2 years ago on my shop appron. I started off with paper patterns, moved to painters dropcloth, fine tuned the pocket layout, fine tuned my strap design, and made one out of waxed duck cloth. Finally I ordered a leather hide. On my legs I have straps that wrap and hold them to my legs with quick release buckles. I wish you best of luck, it's a good looking appron you designed.

That is...quite a lot for an apron. There are quite a few handmade aprons that can be found in the US, UK and EU that are cheaper than this (a UK manufacturer makes leather aprons that sell for less than this fabric one). I think this apron would appeal to two types of people; those who find this to be absolutely perfect for their needs, and those who want to support Alex.

I love the idea of fixing the tie around the waist. My immediate thought was also magnets. However, I think the plastic does not fit the premium aesthetic you are known for and aiming for. I would use a brass 'button' riveted to the strap and place the magnet inside. This would allow the hardware to match metal used elsewhere on the apron. Very cool overall. I have loved seeing your journey.

The price point is insane, the go-to chefs apron of choice Hedley and Bennet is far far cheaper and an obviously much more tested and recommended product. i want to support this but its just unreasonable.
@Nick-hi7ud
@Nick-hi7ud 6 ай бұрын
No it is hardly cheaper. Compare like to like, their "far cheaper" option is 8oz of canvas. The only one that matches up is the waxman apron as its 12.5oz and Alex's is 12oz. It comes in at 120$. You can also see small fasteners to hold the neck strap, in contrast to Alex, who has thick brass. There's the clasp which raises the cost a bit more. And this, from a limited batch run with a small company doing it by hand instead of churning out thousands of products? price point couldn't be fairer, at least for people who want an apron for life.

Have you tried shoulder straps instead of the neck? One thing I noticed is that your grandpa's apron was very light so no strain on your neck when working long hours. With your apron having shoulder straps could minimize the strain it puts on you. Because as it is your neck will probably hurt after a couple of hours. (especially if you use the pockets)

Yes, the flat renovation did not offer too many colours and textures for the new cabinets and work top, but I also bought myself a custom IVAR cabinet (Ikea) which comes unpainted so I put a dark blue on there, just the budget brand from the local hardware store. Turned out to be the same colour used on the TARDIS in Doctor Who, so extra happy! Best blue ever!

my problem with aprons has always been the neck strap. it gives me a sore neck, which is why i dont wear an apron. im curious why you didnt go with the criss-cross straps.

good looking apron. I don't wear aprons, but it looks stylish and practical. When will the sauce pan be back in stock?

It's crazy that people are complaining about the price. It's a limited stock item designed by a content creator, made by a small ethical producer in LA, using high quality and even specialty materials, shipped from LA presumably to France and he's offering free shipping to anywhere in the world. It's a shame that it's out of a lot of people's price range, but stuff is only cheap to the consumer if costs are cut in other areas (generally labor and materials).

For an iteration, I would really miss a pocket for a pen or marker and foldable knife on my apron around the chest. But that might also be habituation haha

This is how a chef (me) does it. Taake a white cotton apron, put over head than take the looong strings, wrap around back, tie in front, 5 seconds max. Take cotton towel fold in half lengthwise, wrap under the belt created by wrapping strings around waist. Start chefing. Thanks, great show!

The waist strap is something that i wrestled with for decades, your apron will solve that. Ordered! It’s pricey i agree, but that will be the last apron i will ever buy. Thank you for the attention to details put into everything you do.

I won't be able to buy one soon, but a new apron, a proper apron does matter. It's so funny how I was just thinking about this yesterday and, "bam!" You make a versatile and well thought out apron. Well done. Big fan.

This apron is expensive, but I don't think Alex has artificially raised the price to make more money. It costs $120 US for one apron. I'm not sure how much those magnet locks are wholesale, but they seem expensive. I'll estimate that the fabric, metal strap adjusters, that bit of leather on the sides, etc cost ~15 dollars wholesale (sweatshops use cheaper versions of these than this company probably does) and those locks are probably at least $10, so my conservative estimate is $25-30 for the materials alone. Where it really gets expensive is the labor: the minimum wage in Los Angeles is $16.78 an hour. Aprons are pretty simple but this one has kind of a lot going on and as you can see in the video, the workers are working methodically and not at sweatshop speeds. The hand-pressing seems particularly time-consuming, but that's worth it for the quality of the final product. I'm guessing that the actual crafting labor, split between several workers doing different steps, is 2 hours per apron, so about $33. The workshop is not charging just the price of materials and that labor, there is also all the overhead of running a factory, the cost of packing and shipping the product to wherever it is kept, and their profits. Let's say all that adds $20 per unit. On top of all that, the shipping to each customer is free. I don't fully understand how shipping cost works, but I'm guessing it will be at least $5 per unit on average. All of those (conservative and admittedly very rough estimates) add up to $83, though I suspect it ends up being closer to $100 altogether. This means that at most Alex sees $40 off of each sale which is kind of low considering he personally did most of the research and development, plus 100% of the marketing. For this entire sale of less than 2000 units, Alex probably ends up with like $40,000-80,000 in profit. Now factor in taxes (both the workshop's US+CA business taxes and Alex's French income tax, and he probably loses like half of that. The actual spendable money he ends up with might not even cover a year of the mortgage on his new studio.

Doesn’t change the fact that it is way too expensive for many people around the world. But luckily many people around the world can wear either home made aprons or ones that cost $2 and deliver 89% of the effect.

I recommend a new edition with pen and utensil pockets on the top of the apron for chefs and industry. We always carry sharpies, pens, highlighteres, spoons, tweezers, and thermometer. I wear my under NY sky apron with pen pockets and i love it. Although your apron is something id love to have at home for all my "makings", id love to see narrow pockets on the top of the apron

I think that was done on purpose because he would have things fall out and potentially into the food. That was why they are waist high pockets only.
