It's so nice to hear someone say there isn't as many walls as you were told. This whole time I've been practicing these scales for years only to realize that the greats knew the rules but broke them. This lesson, even though it seems so obvious, just freed my mind.

WoW! When I first started playing, this is how I played! Then, as you grow, you think you gotta learn the "right" way (which there isn't!) So you develop knowledge, and theory, and proper this, and correct that, but then you are something else. You have reminded me in this lesson that you only learn the rules so you can break them, and get back to the magic of just playing what sounds good!! Thank you immensely for this 12 minutes you took to change my life!

Legend: (noodling around) “hey this sounds pretty good! Think I’ll incorporate it in this lick here....” Music theory teacher: “...and so we see that _______ uses a pentatonic minor infused with parts of the mixolydian heavily influenced with aeolian and sometimes delving into Dorian and Ionian territory....” Legend: “Wow! That’s what I’ve been doing? Cool!”
@aquilarossa51915 жыл бұрын
For finding notes that work I like to chuck on a long backing track, get locked into the groove and then just try find stuff that that I like the sound of. For phrasing practice I like to set a very long delay time, then play a lick and have it come back at me, then play something that kind of answers it and so on. It helps me not just ramble on endlessly without rests and make sure I am actually trying to say something with what i play instead of just shredding scales.

great video. this is one of those things i stumbled across in my pentatonic obsession. essentially it’s mixing the major and minor pentatonic together and adding the flatted fifth or blues note. when mixing the major and minor pentatonic if you remove the minor third you have mixolydian. put the minor third back in and instead remove the major third and you have dorian. so i like to call the mixed scale mixo-dorian. i suppose when you add in the flatted fifth you could call it the mixo-dorian-blues scale. this is great stuff. 🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽

I have been stuck in the basic P scale variants for almost 20 years, but basically flying blind. That direct major 3rd at 4:06 is the wonky Josh Homme note. That's freaking awesome. Thank you so much for all this useful knowledge in one video. I gotta just say, your lessons are great man. You have re-taught me, or enlightened me many times on stuff I was already doing, but didn't know the specifics or scale paths in and out. I'm an old Bluesy/Punk/Hardcore ear taught published A.S.A.P. card holder, on bass drums and production, but guitar has always been my secret fetish. Your channel is a much needed, straight forward, Rock & Roll breath of fresh air in the overly saturated aggro chug/shred-fest that is popular online guitar. You are teaching the fundamental elements of rock, but in a very comfortable and approachable way. I dig it man. Keep being Awesome.

I am 48 and been playing since I was 15, I WORKED HARD, sometimes 16-20 hours a day, and my skill level doesn’t reflect this because I DIDNT KNOW ABOUT SETUP, I thought the ease of playing came from how much I spent$$. NOT! Around 2003 I learned about MIKES MUSIC in CINCINNATI !!!! OMG!!!! I feel that’s when I really began playing, my whole world changed with a SETUP!!!! Robben Ford teaches altered pentatonic scales to practice to get the feel of the extra notes, but scales are still pentatonic. Example: in pentatonic scale replace 5th with flat 5th and practice that pentatonic which has more bluesy feel. Another example : replace flat 7 with 6th and play that pentatonic, gives it a sweeter feel. Or replace minor 3rd with major third like in video. Etc etc etc

My only problem is most guitarist don't have your training or a good enough ear to utilize the 'extra' notes correctly. A great video for me would be some examples of this expanded minor pentatonic being played over different chord progressions, blues/minor/major progressions and then adding passing notes. Also can add different notes to major pentatonic scale. Great video!!!

I've always conceptualized this as a Dorian scale with the flat 5th added. The major third should not be thought of as part of the scale per se as you want to use only where appropriate. For example, if you are playing a major blues and the chord changes to IV (dominant), that major third (relative to the tonic) isn't going to sound good against the flat 7 of the IV chord. My two cents. The first solo in Crossroads is a good example, Clapton plays licks including the major third (C#) over the I chord and avoids it when the IV chord comes around.

The scale..? Sounds like you're just talking about the blues. The blues are important to electric guitar, I think, because you get to play the electric guitar as an electric guitar. Most metal is very classically influenced. You hit notes like a piano. Bends and vibrato here and there. Blues is all about finding the notes in between the notes. How slow are you going to bend to the next note? How far do you want to take it? How hard do you want to pick that string? It's an art form! That's why everyone's so unique. Make music dynamic again!

@@koffieverslaafde627 I definitely love metal. Most of it, anyway. Some of the djent stuff with psychotic time signatures gets a little difficult to listen to after a few minutes. My metal guitar heroes were always guys like Dimebag, Marty Friedman, John Sykes, etc. Blazing speed, sure, but they liked to surprise you with the notes they picked. My top tip for anyone starting out with this for the first time is pick a minor pentatonic lick you know inside out and try adding in that major 3rd somewhere.
