The mp18 is not a rifle, it is a shotgun chambered in a rifle cartridge. The barrel is not rifled and is used as a loophole in Russia where civilians cannot own a rifle but can own a rifle.

You can apply for a rifle license, in Russia, after 5 years of holding a smoothbore license. It's just a pain, so these hybrids were developed that have smooth initial barrels that transition to rifling at the end, skirting the law. You wouldn't be able to get any real accuracy out of firing modern rifle rounds out of pure smoothbores, as the longer and thinner the round, the more unstable it is.

My advice - use the 153 with the longest barrel and don't cheap out on the butt stock. Get as much ergo as you can. It absolutely slaps with the low MOA making your piranha/flechette spread nice and tight.

This has always been classified as a shotgun but never counted for the quest. Irl the gun is a shotgun with a partially rifled 7.62 barrel insert. There are loads of different caliber inserts. I wish we had a 20g insert for this and the revolver shotgun, but bsg are enemies of fun.

Well VPO isn’t fully smoothbore and is only smoothbore for a legal loophole in Russian gun laws, the mp-18 has a 12g version as well.

I just leg meta with a MP-153/155 and magnum buck or Superformances. You're probably gonna take the L a few times but your kit is dirt cheap to get back or you can just loot a new shotgun off scavs. I usually have more trouble finding a Ushanka than finding a new shotgun, unless Fence has some.

These are all purely the wishes of the BSG, and not realism. In the Russian Federation there is no such thing as a "shotgun", there are rifles and carbines. They can be smoothbore or rifled, as well as subdivided into single-shot, double-barreled and self-loading (including pumps). So the Saiga-12 is a "self-loading smoothbore rifle", as is the MP-153 (ИЖ-153 is the original name), as is the VPO-209, it is a "self-loading smoothbore rifle", although it is already a .366 caliber and is a smoothbore copy of the AK. The MP-18 is a "single-shot smoothbore rifle" of 12/70 caliber. In Tarkov is the MP-18MH (ИЖ-18МН) and it is a single-shot smoothbore carbine. What I mean is that half of the weapons can be considered "shotguns". It's possible that it's just a "crooked" translation, when it's difficult for the developer to explain that another country has a different classification of weapons.

The issue with this gun is that it has been considered a bolt action, and shotgun, and then also not a bolt/shotgun wipe to wipe. When it was first introduced it was allowed for both, despite being categorized as a shotgun. I remember completing most of Tarkov Shooter until it wasn't allowed iirc 2 wipes after introduction.

moa doesn't actually matter in tarkov, you can consistently hit headshots on Lighthouse rogues from up to 650m (the fact that you can't put an acog mount on also pisses me off, though I'm guessing that's because it's a weaver rail, not picatinny)

It absolutely does matter. Are you claiming it doesn’t work? There is definitely an aim cone that scales with the weapon’s MOA stat.

Right, so it does matter. Less so at short ranges. The comment I replied to is misleading at best, and just wrong at worst. At 650m, the MOA stat absolutely is relevant. There really was no point to their comment other than “MOA doesn’t affect anything” which is completely untrue. Even with just 5 MOA at 100 meters, you’re looking at about a 5 inch diameter spread, which can and will result in a well placed shot missing the target’s head.
