As a budget player, I live and die by synergy. Nothing feels better than winning with cards that no one sees value in. Synergy takes a card from a waste of deck space to a game winning card.

Beating an expensive deck with cheap cards is such a flex too

Synergy can be a double edged sword too. If one side of the synergy is a dead card without the other. You may end up drawing useless cards a lot of the time

I love the feeling of building a deck and having that eureka moment of that random card you have that was bad but it’s great in this deci

Not to be rude, bc I truly appreciate this channel, but I feel like your title of the video was misleading. I am a seasoned (mostly non-budget) commander player who is transitioning to low-budget deck building. I was disappointed that this whole video was just “synergy is good” and gave examples of synergy in decks (which felt like the video was more like a deck-tech). I was really hoping for more information and tips regarding how to look for cheaper cards or how lower budget affects deck construction by the numbers or your resources for low budget deck building. I hope this comes off as constructive criticism because it’s info that I want to hear (and I’m sure others do too) but I feel like you failed to deliver on the concept.

I want to find cards for cheaper. Whenever I find good synergistic cards they are expensive, all the mainstream sources (stuff like edhrec and deck lists) are catered towards very expensive decks and I don’t know how to hunt down the cheap cards.

Magda, Brazen Outlaw is my most synergistic deck. It’s obviously mono red. It relies on treasures and treasure activation but is a little different in that I heavily employ convoke. I have both land destruction and Dwarves that tap for it. The control side of the deck aims to slow opponent land progression whilst benefitting from its own tapping treasure mechanic. Everything is producing with the end result of a simple high-end dragon smash face. There’s typical red ramp like seething song and salty stuff like blood moon. It’s really fast even when it’s being overpowered by wider decks. There’s a lot of synergy happening regardless of the board state wether I’m trying to pillow fort or just pushing full aggression. I like it because it’s very flexible. It can ultimately lead to a huge X spell blow out, overrun by being wide, or unleash a barrage of hard to deal with dragons. It does typical red things and is effective at getting from A to B. Dwarf tribal is something that’s definitely being promoted especially when you look at the number of cards that are “dwarf” in sets since say Eldraine. Up til recently there was what? Two pages of dwarves across every MTG set. It’s a tribe that appears to continue to grow fast.

I want more mutate cards mtg! Idk about you but I think it's pretty fun to stack and create crazy monsters like a crab cat shark parrot with stacking abilities. I just feel like it's more fun to custom up a creature. We're supposed to be wizards. Chimeric creatures and shape-shifting is under used imho

A deck should have roughly equal amounts of: - Cards that add more/better cards to hand - Cards that give more mana - Cards that create power - Cards that multiply power - Cards that stop your opponents from winning - Cards that stop your opponents from stopping you from winning
@SomethingSonofagun9 ай бұрын
I like the sound of this. Care to elaborate on this? What are the differences between cards that create power and cards that multiply power?
@uselesscommon77619 ай бұрын
@@SomethingSonofagun The most concrete example of this dynamic are token decks, where cards that create power are token generators and cards that multiply power are anthems and mass evasion. In less straightforward decks, the distinction gets less clear-cut, but you still generally have some cards that create power and some that multiply it - self-mill and graveyard payoffs, sacrifice fodder and scarifice engines, cantrips and spell triggers...

How do you find these hidden gem cards that no one knows about or arent listed in EDHREC for example?
@NateFinch10 ай бұрын
Omg yes, Sasaya! She was one of my first decks and I love how she runs super weird, off the wall cards that no one has ever seen. I run her with over 50 lands in the deck.... And it's kinda nasty. The no-budget version is still under $100 and is only expensive mostly because of some creature tutors. It can be built super cheap, though because all the good cards are pennies as you mentioned.

The easiest way is to find a powerful commander that has strong synergy with cheap cards. My most recently powerful and cheap deck was Nezahal. But I'm saying this without having watched the video yet, so I might be repeating some things...

Are there people building decks without synergy? Synergy is one of my favorite things in games.
@GarnettLeary10 ай бұрын
I see a lot of low synergy decks due to new player’s building tribal. It often works out indirectly for goblins and elves obviously but not so much for say “griffins” lol
@OdinSonnah9 ай бұрын
I think it's more that half the cards EDHREC recommends are just generic good stuff for whatever colors you're in, and if your deck has enough colors, you might end up not having room for anything else. So you need to evaluate the larger card pool for niche cards that are better for your specific deck, which requires more time and effort.

I have been playing Yugioh for years, but my best friends are Magic players (some also play Yugioh). I played commander with them with a borrowed deck a couple of times. Of course it was not hard for me to understand the rules, but it wás hard to understand how to use my deck, especially because there's only one card of each. My friends play commander because we can play with all of us (4, with me borrowing a deck). Do you guys think it's worth it for me to build my own commander deck (over a normal beginner deck) , even though I do'nt have any magic decks to begin with?
