Just a small tip, peel the labels off your hand soap pumps in the bathroom, this removes all the words colours etc that adds to the visual clutter, taking it to the next level. Great video

As a teacher of 28 years, I can't think of a better habit to teach your child than the one of keeping a binder. Hurray for you! My own four children brought home awards. The awards were kept in a binder. It was so much fun to pull out each child's binder/binders were pulled out and placed for visitors to see for their graduation weekend. Family loved seeing their success. I loved seeing how my children had learned to value being organized.

Thank you so much again. This was great for me to hear a term given for the thing that I have been learning the hard way over a course of years. I didn't know why it has been happening to me! I have always been great at organizing, but I never truly minimized or reduced my stuff, or the amount of inventory & papers. Sometimes I would finally get the table clear, or the piano top clear, or the countertop clear, and then for a few days I would breathe a happy sigh of deep relief every time my eyes rested on that freshly cleared, open surface. But my husband's and my health was on a 6+ year roller coaster ride, and I could barely keep up with basic homekeeping. I had always enjoyed organizing things out on my desk or table or countertops, making it look organized and homey. But I started to love seeing an open surface so much that I made a decision to find a way to keep 90% of the surfaces clear and open except for 1 or 2 items like a lamp. I couldn't figure out why this was so peaceful to me, but it seemed right and it's going well. When I saw your video tonight explaining "visual clutter," it was such a revelation! I think I get it! So it's one thing to have our home decluttered as fully as possible but it's another thing to notice WHERE those carefully-chosen items that we do keep are actually sitting. Are they sitting out on my surfaces and acting as visual clutter that overwhelms my brain and unconsciously causes me an underlying sense of unease and stress? Yes. The way you explain how easy it is to store appliances in the lower kitchen cabinets should have been so obvious to me! Very exciting! I have been wondering what to do with my newly empty cabinets! Maybe I can actually copy you guys' way! Thanks again! God bless you all 🙏

While I've practiced minimalism for some time, when I watched this video, my favorite take away was your idea of clearing the clutter from around the sink and putting all the cleaning tools in the dishwasher. A simple but effective way to reduce visual clutter. Thanks!

While decluttering I came across photos of my first apartment from several years back. Although I didn’t realize it then, I was living like a minimalist out of financial necessity. However, I never, ever felt a sense of lack. Life progressed, my income increased and I eventually moved into a larger home. I think I felt the need to fill up the space, which set me on the course of having too much stuff. Now I relish that uncluttered lifestyle and have been on a mission to simplify my life and get rid of things. It is beyond gratifying. 😌 Your home is like a deep breath of fresh air to me.

Your video just popped up. I’ve been decluttering for two years. Your point about visual clutter is great. It does take away from the peaceful feeling we want at home. I noticed years ago that when my cabinets weren’t overstuffed it was just as easy to pull it out when needed … and then I didn’t have to clean it or clean around it. Will have to do some more on the visual stuff after watching your video.

I love your family! Thank you so much for sharing. You are both GREAT parents. Teaching your beautiful children what is important in life. I grew up in a cluttered messy house & even as a young child, it really bothered me & I was embarrassed to have friends over. I have been a minimalist my entire life but when I had children, well meaning family & friends gave them soooo much "stuff" causing me intense anxiety. My adult daughters now want to be minimalists & want my help!

Just came across your video tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it! I liked how you both discussed the "feeling" of being unsettled even after numerous purges and realized that unsettled feeling was really over the "visual" reminders that there are still "things" laying about. In fact previous to your video, I was watching the Organized Soprano's channel. Tonight's video was her tackling visual clutter as well. Ger focus was moving all of the organizers she set up on open shelves to behind closed cabinets. It was definitely satisfying to watch. 😆

Thank you so much for videos like this. I am struggling with organizing and reducing "stuff", but I think a few of your videos describing your real process and the way you were experimenting and readjusting to find out your perfect formula and how you got to it - I guess this started to move my way of thinking. The description of a real process is so much more helpful than just listing what one "should" be doing....(and ignoring the process how to get there). Also, we are all different. Like, I would still have it less "empty" but I live alone and need to feel less alone, while in a family of 5 it's already "full" with people and action, so having even things around can be unnecessary stimulation and distraction.

the western world, or the world in general gives too much importance to material possessions and it either causes visual clutter or clumsy lifestyle .... many of us live wondering what others think of us... attending to the needs of life and focus only on the soul and to connect with Mother Nature and the Supreme Soul, will lead a to a calm mind and clear life....we are all born, live and die no matter what age or reason, we all come with a shelf life... our job is to focus on the soul and keep life simple, greed free and just be good,no matter what... that is the minimal lifestyle that each and every creation must follow all the time...keep calm and carry on a simple life:)

Big brave moment 👍👍😀 baby steps!!! While hubby played computer games with our only child; daughter I threw out piles of empty jars he loves to keep in case we need it and some plastic bags as our bag container was over flowering but he insist keeping plastic bags-drives me batty. His mom was a solo mom and with 5 kids she didnt throw away these excess items she may need later. I got rid of excess plastic containers I got for free because I have used some for like birthday supplies like candles and cup cake paper muffin liners and a sheet of emoji smile faces I never got around to using and pop corn and spilt red lentiles' orange lentils' brown lentils chick peas but everything else needs snap lock containers as we get a lot of cockroaches' and ants coming in at this time of the year. We dont need them all. Because of this I was able to put the few jars and plastic containers I kept in one bag and put the air fryer in the pantry. All fitted perfectly. The kettle' toaster and coffee machine fruit dish' mint plant and vase of daily stove items is left on the bench. I am looking for a shelf with hooks to hang my fish flipper tongs wooden spoon. On the wall next to the stove put my favourite antique cookie jar on the shelf that has special meaning to me. Need a little flexi plastic in front of it as we have out side birds flying into the house a lot as I have all ranchers around my dinning /kitchen area and i dont want it broken.

When I had roaches in NYC I put all food in the fridge, including coffee and sugar. I was so grossed out by them (it gave me a peace of mind knowing my food wasn't touched by them). And even that wasn't enough to keep them away.

We have some boxes shelves like what you get from IKEA. Each ‘hole’ has a fabric box in it with our shoes, face masks & hidden wires from the phone & internet router.

If you ever build a house, you can put al big drawers under the counter and windows above. IKEA has this setup. First designed by Frank Lloyd Write.
