Since binge watching your channel the last four months I have grown proficient with hanging axes, talked dad into giving me grand dad's tools to restore and put to use, organized my shop using "my three things", invested in a "proper" vintage craftsman vise, finally bought chainsaw chaps, become more aware of all the real work my Mrs B does around the inside of the house and told her I appreciate her hard work ...... Needless to saw your channel has had a big impact on me.

Have you tried rubbing a piece of chalk over the file before sharpening with it? It helps keep those shavings out of the grooves so you don't have to card it very much or at all in most cases. Found this tip in a hundred year old book set called The Boy Mechanic.

Thanks for your videos, Cody. I am still very stuck in the disposable mentality of consumer culture. When I do spend a little extra on nicer tools or work wear, I have trouble keeping up with maintenance and find that I lack the discipline to stay on top of my gear. Cody, as a firefighter myself, I too am fond of the Rogue tools. I have had my particular hoe/adze/pounder for about five solid years and can complain. I have a tip for you, if you need to keep a tool in a location where it's handy, but not always protected from the sun/weather, i.e. the bed of a truck, take a piece of blown 1 1/2" wildland hose and cut to about a foot longer than the tool handle, then slide it over the handle until it bottoms out on the head. Then fold over the extra at the end of the handle. This will keep the tool handy yet protected. Works great. Anyway thanks for the great channel and watch for wind shifts

When I lived in the UK, I got a trenching hoe similar to yours. I liked it so much I brought it back to Oregon with me. The blade is slightly longer and more dished than yours. This makes it possible to haul big gulps of dirt out of holes and trenches and make cleaner, deeper trenches than pretty much any other hand tool. Much easier and more effective than a shovel. As a nation of gardeners and innovators for many centuries, the Brits have evolved superior tools for gardening and hacking away at the earth. Oh, and Mrs. W's da bomb!

Fiberglass is a gift from the devil himself. I don't care if it is 120 degrees outside. I will cover up as much as humanly possible whenever I have to work with that stuff. Sweating like a dog for hours is better than having fiberglass embedded in to your skin for days.
@GraniteValleyDave
@GraniteValleyDave 8 жыл бұрын
I heard a long time ago that if you get fiberglass fibers stuck in your skin you can coat your arm with PVA glue and once it dries it peels off and grabs the fiber. I haven't had a chance to try it but if you get fed up with them in your skin for days maybe give it a go. I'd sure be interested to find out if it works.

+Brian Choitz I'm a home inspector. I get fiberglass in my skin at least once a month despite wearing gloves (I use the cheap cotton jersey gloves but still). fiberglass splinters are the worst. very painful and so hard to find. I use a flashlight to find them (often with a magnifying glass these days). the light retracts so you spot them better that way. I have a pair of very fancy shmancy tweezers that are fine enough to pluck those little needles out. but I've never had to deal with more than 5 at a time. if I had an arm full, I'd try the glue route

Cody, I love to watch the pure enjoyment you get out of taking care of your tools. You have definitely sparked something in me. I've already started working on my axe, and like you said in an old video, I fully expect it to take an hour or more because I haven't been taking care of it and keeping it sharp. I'm going apply what you've shown here to my shovel. I never knew about the treatment of the handle. I'm definitely going to start that. Also, while I was watching the video I was looking at Rogue's website and tried to figure out just which model you got by guessing at the size and noting the fact that it was one that was sharp on the edges too. Do you remember what model of hoe that was? I apologize if you've already answered that in another video. If you have, I'll find it eventually. One last question/comment, and this is purely for my education, not any kind of correction is intended. I noticed in several other sharpening videos you like the round Lansky sharpening stone. Is that just not appropriate here because sandpaper is a better fit or am I over thinking this (I'm guilty of that a lot of times.) Great video!!!

Boiled linseed oil can replace antiseize, I use it to prep bicycle spoke threads to ensure ability to ever retension them for longer life. It has worked great for me. On the tool front I don't buy the best but instead I choose mid range, but tool care is everything. My favorite tools are the scuffle hoe sometimes called a sturrip hoe, and a curved maddock with an axe on the opposing end and a cherry handle.

I sure wish the Forest Service still hired that way. I got out of the Navy this spring and went to a Forest Service hiring event with my two year old, daily worn boots looking better than new (Cody would approve) and they wouldn't even talk to me. To be fair, I was given the wrong information about the event. I was told it was for recent graduates and recently separated veterans, but it was just recent graduates; but nobody there was wearing boots, and I didn't even see a touch of care given to the footwear of any other person there. I spoke to a few of the other people attending and I'm sure the Forest Service got some quality employees out of that event. Hiring based on the care of footwear would have been nice though. I'd be a wildland firefighter right now for sure. I have lots of respect for those guys. It is a great service that they perform. On the same level as our troops, but not as recognized. Thank you Cody for your service and thank you to all of the other men and women who risk their lives each year saving lives, property and the beautiful wild lands that we all enjoy.
