What gets me about most models painted up and shown on various channels is the depiction that everywolrd is bathed in sunlight, same as on Earth / Terra but out in the depths of Space who is to say what light there is and what colour variations there are ?

Yep, you can do some great things by changing the environment

Cool to see black 4.0 being used on miniatures. You're the first painter I've seen using it, so far. Cool paint job
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
I managed to get an early access bottle of it so I may actually be the first Miniature painter using it on YT

Great paintjob bud, got yourself a new sub and OH MY GOD THAT DOG IS A BEAR!

Sub for the models, stay for the dog

That looks great! I've found that hitting the model with a coat of AK ultramatt (before the black 4.0, it kills the finish of that) helps push the OSL even further, by eliminating the shine from the actual lights in the room
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
Yeah I use the AK ultramatte varnish a lot, but I didn't find it particularly necessary for this piece.

Fantastic painting tutorial! I love the emphasis on the saturation of color. I used to basically "dilute" the color of my paints by adding white in an attempt to make them appear brighter for lighting, and it always felt off until getting some fluorescent or highly saturated pigments. It's a game changer.
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
It really is super important! And you don't even need any special paints to do it, everything I used here was either GW or a standard Vallejo paint.

Very solid tutorial. I'll try and employ some of these techniques when I find a model that begs for osl.

nice tutorial, boiling down of the crucial points is gonna help me practice effectively, and the editing is pretty stellar. great work.

Thanks I've been trying to learn as much about editing as I can lately. Glad it paid off.

Did you use florescent paint for the green or yellow? What florescent paint is recommended for miniatures?
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
Nope, all standard acrylics. Vallejo and GW paints.

Any inkling as to what the greenstufworld osl white airbrush effects paint is for? I asked them what makes it different than other whites and they just said its good for osl lol. I was thinking maybe it has a super small piggment size or something but i cant honestly figure out what purpose it serves
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
My guess is that it's just a very intense white that's intended to be airbrushed on to a surface you want to glow first, and then you glaze on the glow color on top. That's not the process I use since I don't have an airbrush, but I have seen others do something similar and get good results.
@s7r49 Жыл бұрын
@@HereticsHeroes ah It's coming with the extras/fx pack for a super dark black paint kickstarter thing i backed with them so i was curious about it. but I think there's a language barrier haha. I actually just got one of those cheap battery powered yygywen airbrushes a few other mini painters reviewed and was kinda shocked how good it works for 50 bucks so i guess ill have to buy something glowing and try it out xD i was just using it for base coats but i guess i should get more use out of it since it works better than i expected.

Actually, the saturated colors are only to a point. Once you hit the "peak" of that color, you DO want to go desaturated. Look at a lightsaber - only the outer edges are the saber color, and the core glows white. However, only the absolutely brightest bits would be white or near-white. In fact, most of the not that good OSL I see is where they go straight to the absolute most saturated color. It ends up looking like it got sprayed by a splat of a bucket of paint. And the other major issue I tend to see is the falloff - they use the same amount of illumination from a light source, no matter the distance from that light source.
@HereticsHeroes Жыл бұрын
The reason I pointed out the saturation was because even though you do want to get to white or near white at the center, if you just mix in white to get there your colors will get dull along the way and it will compromise the appearance of intensity from light.
