It's the ground leg that allows you to balance kick harder etc etc etc I agree too many rely of the kicking leg and neglect the importance on that leg that's the main foundation... Great video

I'm 2 years late on this video but this is exactly the information I needed tonight. In fact, I think next time I'm teaching stretching this is going to be what I tell the kids about. Because some of them are probably not flexible enough to get into this position yet, But it's always good to know why we are doing these stretches.

I love your videos. Quality content, plus you have a contagiously flaming personality that is rather uplifting. I feel like I’m learning, while simultaneously improving my mood. I always feel happier after one of these videos.

Kicking this high is nothing to do with defending yourself. Because you can kick high doesn’t mean you can defend yourself. I agree that most people rely on the kicking leg but the supporting is the most important. 👍

If you're still having trouble do the opposite of this exercise. Stand on your support leg and do a side kick at your limit against a wall (in your case waist height). Now your support foot should be on the ground, the kicking foot is pressed against the wall, and your legs should be making a 90º angle. Then reach for your feet with your same side hand, basically rocking your torso side to side. Instead of supporting your torso and kicking away, you will support the legs and force your abductors and glutes (medius, I think?) to move the weight of your upper body. Do sets of 10-12 reps, when you are reaching the end of the set your muscles will be BURNING. Now that you're gaining strength there start doing your preferred hip opener stretches. When you try doing the side kick against the wall check if you can get your foot higher. Find your new max and rock your torso back and forth in this new position. You need to get the strength at the limit of your range since you couldn't get there before.

Thank you Donavan! You're right, this is not talked about and taught enough. I can do a pretty high side kick holding onto a wall but cannot get the same height once I let go of the wall. Also I have noticed that my supporting foot starts to hurt after a while. I think this could be part of the problem.... also I would love a video about how to do the Koryo double side kick properly :) Hope you are doing well!

Bro, do you recommend stretching every day ... I mean stretching while having sore muscles ?? Please explain briefly 🙏
@donavantkd3 жыл бұрын
Your body is a better teacher than anyone else will ever be. If you feel lots of pain one day...take a breather. If you're feeling a little sore, do just a few light stretches in the areas that feel sore to relieve some of the tension. Work up to stretching every day...but you may start with three or four times a week until your muscles are used to that kind of training :)

Hey Donavan! I like your courses... Really great stuff. But I have one question about the Sidekick. I see your upper body goes also down, but in my opinion a better looking Sidekick is, when the torso is more upright. Is a this more than genetics gifted or also a case of flexibility?
