I'm 71---it was back in 67' that I became interested in Gung Fu. I've always enjoyed the hand and arm techniques of Wing Chun. But having quick feet was always especially enjoyable. My legs are still very fast, despite my age. These stretches are great---painful, but great! Of course I take them slowly. But I have never stopped stretching since the late 60's, so these stretches weren't TOO un- comfortable. Thanx, guys.

Very informative! I wonder if these stretches might also help with my running, or rather, racewalking. I don't need to kick higher, but I bet that my hip capsules would benefit from being less tight. I'm going to turn 58 in September and have learned that I should keep myself flexible, but not to do too much until I am used to the move, or the dreaded DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) will get me the next day.

This is great, thank you Bob and Brad. When identifying how your 'body is made' I find it hard to know if i can actually go any further over time. For example, when i hug my knees to chest, when knees are together there is a space between them and my chest and ever so slight discomfort in the hip joints when at maximum hip flexion. But if i part the knees slightly i can bring them to my armpits easily. I have difficulty getting into firelog and pigeon poses for yoga. When i lie down on my back, legs straight, heels down and abduct the hips one at a time using a strap i feel the same mild to slight discomfort in the abductor region. When stretching hamstrings and flexors I don't feel this type of discomfort at all. I think what I am saying is how to tell if a stretch is just grinding a couple of bones together or here in this insightful video the hip capsule. Could aforementioned discomfort be a stretching of the hip capsule. It should feel pain free as mentioned. So does the hip capsule stretch akin to muscle fibres in that they lengthen and possibly shorten over time if left 'unstretched' or perhaps more like a tendon or ligament stretch? And how do they differ to muscular stretching anyway? I'm a bit lost with the knowledge but do remember i used to kick higher decades ago...

Bob and Brad, I'm not a martial artist but I'm always interested in learning new exercises to help keep me fit and healthy as I age. I have incorporated these stretches into my daily routine and all I can say is WOW. The result is increased flexibility, increased range of motion and any pain I have/ or had in the hip capsule (due to stiffness), literally disappears in less than a minute. Thank you guys for all that you do.

Thanks for sharing these excersises and tips. I am 50 years old and took up karate again 2 years ago after a 30 year break (doing other types of sport). I try to regain my flexibility and found that my hips are now the limiting factor. Excersises like to ones you show in the video feel really good and seem to help. I have one question though: When doing these excersises (after karate training), I feel extra restricted in my hips 2-3 days after as if I need a relatively long recovery time. How frequent would you recommed doing these excersises? And would it be better to go ligth 4-5 days per week compared to go heavy say 2 times per week?

This is a great series. Would you please expand it to include stretches to the calf muscles (front kicks) and stretches that help to 'loosen' the knee joints ankle and toes. Thank you! It's a great video! But what can people with hypermobility do, if not these? I've been doing taekwondo for more than 17 years now; I started as a kid. I'm still struggling with side splits and high side and roundhouse kicks because of knee pain, though. I'm hypermobile, but in spite of that, I'm stiff in my hips in some ways and can't and never could do side splits. Stretching and follow-up training always caused me great knee pain and a lot of anxiety because of feelings of instability in my knees. Doing side splits hurts a lot more in my knees than doing front splits. As I'm getting older, I'm experiencing pain in other joints too. What can I do in terms of stretching, while being hypermobile, if I still need to improve the height of my kicks? I've already almost torn my ACL in right knee and my LCL's and MCL's are way too loose. (I'm not doing only taekwondo, I often do other sports and a lot of knee and other joints strengthening exercises to balance the damage taekwondo does.) I've been looking for some good piece of advice for people who still need to stretch in spite of hypermobility for a very long time, but the advice usually is don't stretch.

I wonder if this will help me. When I wake up in the morning and get out bed my left hip area hurts when I get up to walk. I do stretches every morning and it gets better until I sit for long periods. How often should you do this each day?

I suffer pain when lifting the leg to the side, whether right or left, the pain is at the fixed pelvic joint, but when lifting in front, there is no pain. Will this exercise help me get rid of the pain? Thank you

Hello sir. I have one question about hip capsule muscle you showed on skeleton. On my left side i feel pain in that area when i am doing stretching and kicking high with either legs. I can slowly stretch to max but when it come to side kick i feel the pain. What should I do?
