Mattystuntz FPV acro tricks make no sense! What is it about his copter's setup that contributes to the mind-blowing nature of his stunts? The secret ... is that he's an awesome pilot. And also that he has a huge amount of uptilt on his HD camera. Could something as simple as uptilt make it look like he's flying a 3D copter? I'll tell you why the answer is yes.

I have to give it up to Joshua, he did an outstanding job breaking some of these tricks down. I've been telling people since Dec to move your fpv cam into 60degree, hold it in your hand and see what the thrust does in certain position in reference to the fpv camera. But now ill just point them to this video lol. But one thing I dont suggest doing is just putting your camera to 60 and head out flying. gradually move it up. around sept i really started working on my speed, and it just made sense to me to fly with more tilt. i started at 45 and slowly went up to 60-70degrees. but I learnt the new flight physics and mastered them before moving to an enclosed concrete structure like underneath the bridge. I dont want to see anyone getting discouraged because they break there gear. I came from stunting motorcycle where if i didnt perform a trick properly i would break bones. so it doesnt bother me that much if i break a quad or gopro. Also I dont fly lumenier gear. I fly a LRC X frame. Its ultra light, a true X frame and perfectly balanced on all three axis. Thanks again Joshua, its an excellent tutorial.

+Diego The Wolf I am pretty sure that matty and others like him just learn to fly that way. I have gone from 15 degrees uptilt all the way to about 45 degrees. Each time I add another 5-10 degrees, the copter feels like it's flying a little weird, and then my brain sort of re-adjusts and I'm good to go. When people suggest fancy mixing and other features to compensate for camera uptilt, I'm a little skeptical. I want my stick inputs to correspond to motor inputs, not camera inputs. My brain can handle the translation.

Bought a RTF kit and Velocidrone to practice a month or so ago. I have close to 20 hours into Velocidrone and a couple packs each day in the last couple weeks. It was getting extremely frustrating because it felt like I was never in control. I saw this video and plugged in a 50 degree camera into Velocidrone and now I actually go where I intend to. Waiting for some packs to charge and the wind to calm down outside now to test IRL. Would have never dawned on me to test camera angle; just thought something was wrong with my motor skills.

I think Skitzo has less uptilt on his GoPro than his FPV cam. I was just looking at his Instagram the other day.
@FinalGlideAus
@FinalGlideAus 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Bardwell Hard to pull the wool over your eyes :). Skitzo runs flat GoPro and abut 30 FPV cam tilt. This gives all his barrel roll type tricks looks much more axial. It also makes the GoPro look at the ground during FFF so that's why you always see him going vertical
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
FinalGlideAus Tell him to try out the cam uptilt compensation feature. With 30 of FPV, try putting in 15 of uptilt compensation. should give relatively axial rolls while making framing of regular shots easier. If you were to combine 15 degrees of GoPro uptilt with 15 degrees of uptilt compensation, then the GoPro should be perfectly axial, but less staring at the ground during forward flight.

I'm feeling proud of myself, because I could see some of the effects you mention coming, but I gathered my courage, and set my camera to its max uptilt position. Which happens to be 60 degrees... on the FPVFreerider sim. The same one I learned acro mode from you on. Thanks. I went from not even being able to fly to the FIRST gate, to feeling good, and doing neat tricks. Even in my real quad. I was brave though to try it, but not crazy and scared to try it on my real quad. Hence the sim. I pretty much figured out the effects you're talking about, and had pleasant surprises, and negative ones. But I kind of expected them. Split S's become a visibility piece of cake, but pull out low with the horizon level, and your gonna crash! Just flying around was a bitch. If your heading towards an opening level, you're hauling ass. To gain a little needed altitude, without changing attitude can take A LOT of throttle, if you can do it. So I was gaining loads of speed, and I already was going faster than I wanted. I think stuff I learn in the sim transfer well into a real quad. Thanks, you're explanations were great. I was in shock! LOL

This is very informative. Thank you! Can you make a video on tilted motors? Your video shows the benefits of having 60 degrees of uptilt in terms of aerobatics, but to get the most speed, would having less uptilt but with tilted motors be better? Tilted motors allows the quad to get the same amount of forward vector but at less tilt, which makes it more aerodynamic. Despite this benefit, tilted motors are apparently unpopular. Do you know why?
@piman3072
@piman3072 8 жыл бұрын
+Fyre SG I've heard they mess with yaw characteristics, since your motors are no longer in the same plane. There are several frames now, such as the Krieger and LRC X frame, where the increased drag is negligible, so motor tilts don't have much benefit anymore.

Very informative, I'm just getting the parts to build a QAV250 to move away from my smaller training junk and so I'm looking at as many setup/instructional videos that I can find. Question for you Joshua, what would his FPV camera be set at? The same degree as the HD camera or something different?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
I believe he sets his FPV camera to less uptilt. Personally I prefer to keep my FPV and HD cameras at very similar angle because it helps with framing. But other top pilots run at different angles. Less HD than uptilt mea s you can fly fast while keeping your rolls looking pure. Less FPV angle than HD means you get more 3d like effect.

very nice explanation Josh! again I find your videos very informative. I have an off topic question again for you. a few weeks ago I asked about 4s batteries and my quad shutting down on full throttle. your suggestion was higher c rating. well I purchased a 40c battery (zippy) and still get the same result. what I don't understand is why I can fly on 35c at 3s but 40c on 4s and I get low voltage. I don't fly very aggressive at all. what c rating would you suggest (or batteries) and is there something else I may be missing? thank you very much in advance!
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+J dog harrell You can't judge what C rating you need until you determine how many amps your motors are trying to pull. Check the results in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZmzhHiOjbZmns0 Notice that, all else being equal, switching from 3S to 4S results in about 30% more amp draw at full throttle. But honestly, if you say you don't fly aggressively, then there is probably something else you're missing, but I don't know what it would be.
@justinharrell2233
@justinharrell2233 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Bardwell OK, so in theory the throttle/amp curve is much greater on 4s at the higher end as compared to a 3s battery? that would likely explain why even a 40c battery would still shut down my quad (assuming the C rating was accurate). I have a tattu 45c in the mail to try, hoping for positive results.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this, Joshua: an option in beta flight where camera up-tilt is entered by the user and the flight controller mixes the roll/yaw inputs so that, for example, a roll-only input would result in the copter only "rolling" from the perspective of the fpv camera (no PERCEIVED yaw). So, if 90 degrees was entered (and used on the copter), roll and yaw would be completely swapped. This would mean if you used a stick input to roll the copter left, the fc would actually be yawing it to the right instead. If 45 was entered, a roll input would be broken into 50% roll and 50% yaw in the OPPOSITE direction. A yaw input would result in 50% yaw and 50% roll in the SAME direction. Just curious to see if any pilots can imagine this resulting in a desired flight feel or if it would just add to the confusion. Maybe this is already being done in transmitter programming? Maybe the copter would be unflyable? I'm still trying to process this mind bender.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+ghall05 I don't personally like that option. In order to do snap rolls at high uptilt, the copter would need to mix in large amounts of yaw. I think it's very likely that the copter would not have enough yaw authority to keep everything together, and would become destabilized. I don't mind coordinating turns and rolls by hand. It takes a bit of adjustment, but I get used to it and I'm fine. But I feel like coordinating a snap roll to get pure roll back out of this algorithm would be difficult, because it's happening so fast. I like knowing that when I bang the roll stick full over, no yaw at all is being commanded, and maximum authority is being given to the roll axis. The snap-roll makes a cone instead of a line, but it happens so fast that I don't care. I also kind of like some of the unexpected effects of up-tilt on the camera, such as entering a split-s "level" (actually pitched forward) and then being pointing straight down when I roll 180.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+ghall05 All that being said, I haven't actually tested it out yet, and I intend to test it some time soon, and maybe I will love it.
@ghall05
@ghall05 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Bardwell Great point. Of course, a 50/50 roll/yaw mix would feel like you were flying a copter with 0° tilt (except at WARP speed). Since most of us are probably used to flying with an angle of about 30°, the mix could be tweaked to give a copter with a large amount of up-tilt the feel of one with a less extreme angle (except faster!) and would lessen the amount of work the yaw axis would be required to do. All in the name of MORE AWESOME!

+Revs Hmm, think I've sussed it. It's subtle but it looks like a/ he is losing a little alt and b/ he's not quite rolled 90*, so he's only losing alt slowly, but with so much cam tilt his roll angle actually looks like yaw... if that makes sense. Oh, and his quad weighs like 5 grams lol Still, a stunning video and pilot.

+Revs Ive told people to do this a couple months ago in my previous video comments. put your fpv cam to 60, then hold it in your hand and see what the thrust does in different orientations. when you fpv camera is in a knife edge position you are still producing lift. thats what makes knife edge rolls possible.

+mattystuntz Still Amazing!! With the angle so high do you use an OSD with horizon to know when you're level? That's what I'm trying to adjust to when I change the angle. I don't have an OSD yet.

I have a question. What angle is the fpv cam? What angle is the footage cam? I'm trying to clear this up between a friend and I. He swears up and down that the footage cam is at about 30 degrees, and the Fpv cam is 60. I think it's the opposite. Could you clarify this for me please. Thank you.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+RadioActive RC The HD cam is definitely, unquestionably, at high uptilt. There is no way to do the tricks that matty does without high uptilt on the camera from which we are seeing the footage. It's possible to run the FPV cam at lower angle than the HD cam, in which case the HD cam looks like crazy mattystuntz land while the pilot is actually seeing something more normal. It's also possible to do the opposite and run the HD cam at lower angle than the FPV cam. This lets the pilot fly fast but keeps rolls looking centered for the viewer. It also means that the viewer sees more of the ground and less of the sky, which can be okay to a point, since the viewer doesn't need to actually steer the copter. I think I remember matty saying that his FPV cam was at a lower angle than his HD cam, but I honestly can't remember where I heard that, so don't take it as gospel.

+Joshua Bardwell thank you for the quick reply. It made sense to me that the HD cam would be at a higher tilt angle in order to give us the awesome anti gravity footage. Thanks for clearing that up.

Question... Why would you need your flight camera at such an extreme angle and force to fly differently? Your GoPro mounted at an extreme angle (60 degrees) while leaving your flight camera at more of a conservative angle (40ish) creates the same affect without the confusing optical illusions during flight
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't, because then you're not flying at high uptilt and the GoPro simply looks at the sky and the ground. The GoPro angle must be relatively close (say, within +/- 10 degrees) to the FPV camera angle for the flight footage to look good.

@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
In order to fly a circle, thrust must be 90 degrees to the tangent, I believe. I am pretty sure (but not 100% sure) that if thrust was not 90 degrees to the tangent, you would fly an arc instead of a circle. But honestly, it's all abstract. It's just concepts.

That part initially confused me too. However if you do what Joshua suggests and imagine what the quad is doing then you'll see that it is 'just' a power loop with the quad pointing at a right angle to its direction of movement. It requires a huge amount of skill to pull off, but he's not breaking physics to do it! 😀

Imagine it as a roll maneuver with 90 degrees uptilt. It would look like yaw because if the uptilt. Whenever you're above 45 degrees uptilt, yaw and roll appear transposed from the camera's view.

I think that Matty doesn't run the same angle on his gopro as his FPV camera. But if you want your audience to see the effect of the crazy uptilt, you need to run the gopro at the crazy uptilt. I think that Matty runs his FPV camera at less uptilt than his gopro.

hey Josh I got a quick question for you since they found those new planets they are questioning gravity and they are questioning whether or not the Earth is actually spinning I had somebody ask me a good question and I did not have the answer for it when we do a bunch out to the clouds why when we descend are we not in another location if the Earth is actually spinning I know I need to put my tinfoil hat on LOL I figured you would be the perfect guy to ask on this
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
+Ultimatevapor918 just to be clear, nobody legitimate is questioning whether the earth is spinning. But to get to your question, let me ask you a question back. The earth is spinning. You are standing on the surface of the earth. You are therefore spinning. The Earth has an atmosphere. When the atmosphere moves relative to the surface of the earth, we call that wind. Sometimes there is no wind. What does it mean when there is no wind?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
+Ultimatevapor918 here is another question. If you are in a car, driving at 60 mph on the highway, and you throw a ball up in the air, why does it come back down into your hand, instead of smashing into the back window?

Personally i have to disagree. I think that his quad is a bit more heavy meaning, it has greater momentum, also since he is going really fast that also adds to the momentum of the quad thus giving more hang time. I dont think he has more than 45 degrees of uptilt, i think its very challenging to get the 60 degrees uptilt. From what i know Mr Steele is using 25-30 degrees which is relatively a small angle. So to sum it up... i think the momentum is the secret. (i also think he is is using 3D, cause even if he had 60 degrees of uptilt he would not be able to pull those tricks of. (simple trigonometry))
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
+Claudiu Ciontea a heavier quad does not have more hang time because it achieves less vertical velocity for a given amount of thrust.

+Joshua Bardwell Ohh there's no doubt he's an awesome pilot but he also tricking us in to making us believe he's doing the unthinkable making him look better and that this type of flying isn't possible when it's just the usual tricks with extreme camera tilt. I've only just started flying so I'll stick to my 30 degrees for now thank you haha. Check my channel. Not bad for the little experience I have. I will be this good one day ;)
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+Lewis “BoosiveFPV” Boateng I really feel like it's overly dismissive to say that he's tricking us. What he's doing is not "just the usual tricks". Check out his first big video, where he does a blind backwards loop between two trees, for example. I had never seen that trick before he did it, and the behind-the-scenes video he published shows just how much practice and prep was required to pull it off. You try doing the vertical drops he does between trees... it's very hard! Heck, you try flying as fast as he does without crashing at all! Matty is definitely innovating. Anyway, the way uptilt changes the direction of thrust is so radical that I don't even think you can say this is "the same old tricks". Look at how he floats at the top, underneath the highway. Nobody who wan't running 60-70 degrees uptilt could even attempt that trick. You're entitled to your opinion, but I really disagree.
@BoosiveFPV
@BoosiveFPV 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Bardwell you did clearly say in your vid that the cam tilt gives the illusion that he's pulling off the unthinkable though. When it's just extreme camera tilt combined with professional flying skills. I guarantee if the other greats did the same thing. Their videos would have the same effect. Before this I thought he had super powers lol. But all it is practice getting the moves down and then gradually increasing the camera tilt as you improve. In a sense. Anyone can do this. It just requires practice like most things. That's all I'm trying to say. Not trying to discredit his flying at all. He's a world class pilot. I'm just saying that the cam makes it look like he's actually doing more then what he is. I'd like to see the action cam at a normal angle. I guarantee the videos wouldn't look quite as spectacular. Do you not agree?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+Lewis “BoosiveFPV” Boateng Well, in a sense, anybody can do anything with enough practice... Matty has always said he's not using any 3D or other tricks. Just camera uptilt.
