Great technique. It's not about the black is so true. I paint mostly white, but I found the same principle: The white becomes brighter by putting contrasting colours (like black or dark brown) on the model. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm not scared of the black anymore. 😊

I noticed a lot of brits don't varnish models. Always protect your hard work with quality matte varnish. Do the grass tufts and the flock last.

That was really very helpful. I think my issue with dry brushing was after taking the paint off on tissue paper I then go straight onto the mini and get the smearing you were talking about. Using it on the base first might be the game changer I'm looking for. Thanks.

As someone who frequently prays to the glue gods for my models to stick to its base, i have recently been advised to use an activator. Helps it set really quickly

I always just sand the feet a bit to get some grip. Had very limited issues especially cus most models stand on their own

Hmmm, intersting technique! It certainly gives a very rich, balanced appearance. I'm much lazier with my minis, usually just slapping on a single light dusting of mechanicus standard grey over a black basecoat. Gets the job done, for me at least, but I should definitely give your method a try!

Really well explained, as you say no golden deamon standard, but you go over things that I think a lot more experienced painters forget newer/forgetful painters might not know or think of straight away. The percentages for the paints used on the bases made me realise i was using to much white and zandri dust (for the effect I was going for) to highlight with and now i feel happy to actually try and base the 30 odd models that still need basing and redo the scuffed ones. Thanks mister winters for been an inspiration for me wanting to get into the hobby, even if its just the painting side for now, and been an all round swell person!

The most important thung for black miniatures are the other colors you use as a contrast. Lots of back/dark/brown miniatures look great up close, but become just a blob across the gaming table.

Dont wipe your excess off on paper. Use something that won't steal the moisture from the paint. Like a rock or some left-over bits. You will get a much nicer finish.

Winters, can this technique be used for painting cloth? I bought the chaplain consul/praetor in cataphractii armor kit, and I painted the capes black. I painted on about three different shades of black and hit it nuln oil. And guess what? It looks black... =) Not much variation in the cloaks, even though I had black, dark grey, and medium grey on there together....
