Karen you are such an excellent teacher. Love the underpainting technique. Also you comments on how a textured surface can keep us/ the painting from becoming overly tight. I also love how you embrace the fluidity of the underpainting and let that inspire you. I would love demos on both the art graf and how to change the picture to cool tones. Lastly, I appreciate you saying which sets of pastels you are using, but I wonder if at the start of the video you could show us the handful of individual colors you will be using in the painting? I like to paint along with you as practice at moving along more quickly and as a beginner it would be easier to pick out my little collection before starting rather than try to grab them with you as we go. Thank you for your wonderful and generous instructions and envouragement ♥️

I tend to keep you or Stuart Davies on in the background. I find your voices comforting and sometimes I learn cool stuff and see lovely art come through too, but it also means that I might pause a video and come back to it later. I know on his channel a lot of us do that and it's really messed with his analytics too. So please keep trucking on and I'm sorry I'm messing up your stats.

I love this tutorial and need to know more about pastels. I watched it twice. It’s a great pastel painting, although I have to say that I liked it best at minute 17:40 and also 19:00. What would you use to set the pastel if you were putting in some acrylic paint in a final layer?
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I don't work with acrylic so I don't have a good answer for you. If you do mix media with pastel and pastel is on the top layers the painting will need to be protected under glass.

Hi Karen - great video, thank you. I have a question, I paint with pastels on top of an acrylic underpainting, which has a textured clear gesso base. I couldn't apply so much pastel as you do, as it won't adhere. I assume the very thinly applied acrylic is causing the problem and that doing a different underpainting means that your pastel stays put? Framing is a nightmare for me, as dust always goes on to the mount around it, but I would love to be able to build up layers as you do.
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
Acrylic underpaintings can be tricky if the painting is too thick . It needs to be the consistency of watercolor or the pastel will not stick to it. If it is thin enough it shouldn't be a problem so I am not sure what is happening for you! Thanks for watching the video!
@lynnnorton25372 жыл бұрын
@@KarenMargulis Thanks for getting back to me Karen. My underpainting is extremely thin as I like dribbles etc, so I don't know why I am having problems. I have ended up using the hard square pastels more than, say, Unison (which I love), as they cause more of a problem. I'll just have to keep experimenting to see what works! Many thanks for all your wonderful videos - I find them fascinating and informative. I live in the UK, so can't come to any of your workshops, so really appreciate your generosity in showing us different techniques in this wonderful medium.
