If I may suggest a correction, from around 4:00 onwards, you kept saying chord V as G, and chord IV as A. In the key of D, it's the other way round- A is V and G is IV. Let me know if I misunderstood your instructions. Thanks for the lesson, though!

As someone who plays a lot of CCM (I play for a small church choir and generally handle the more modern stuff), I can tell you that this is basically how they do accompaniments, with a few things they tend to add such as melodic riffs on top. However, when I go out and listen to contemporary pop music from more mainstream sources, I hear basically the same stuff. Accompaniment is basically background music for the vocalist, and it's played like background music.

Philip McNiel I was just about comment this. I play soooo much of this stuff at church it's not even funny. Love the intention of the music yet its so generic. Luckily, my church is very relaxed and loves it when we add little solos and fills between verses or bridges so I can spice it up a little bit

Awesome! I love the catch title "how to waste time" but this is a great theory lesson in improv. I've not done as much with the sus chord, but I've been trying to get my students to "play around" with the 1-4-5 like this to work on playing by ear. Maybe if I call it "wasting time" they'd be more interested in trying it! LOL! Thanks so much for this!

I'm not good at guitar (started picking it up less than two years ago), but I do stuff like this when I'm just chilling on the couch late at night, and my wife has fallen asleep next to me. I call it dinking around or noodling. I can't actually play anything, but when she hears it she usually says, hey that actually sounds like music. 😁 👍

Many years ago, I was messing around at the piano in the student lounge at college and someone came up to me and told me there was gonna be a memorial service for a student who had passed away and asked if I'd like to play some music for it. Now, I didn't know the student and definitely didn't think about what I would play songwise. She said just some light background stuff is all they were looking for beforehand and after. I agreed. I used these exact techniques and everyone came up to me afterward and told me it was perfect and very beautiful. They were so grateful. I was told that the girl who had passed played much in the same way. The girl who asked me to play even paid me for the time. I reluctantly accepted after refusing repeatedly!!

You have no idea how much seeing this relieved me. I need to have roughly an hour and a half of music to play somewhere in the middle of April for my first ever paid 'commission' as a pianist (I don't even have an actual job, it's for my mom's friend!) and I was freaking out about how I was going to cram tens of songs into my brain, learn them, and get them sounding good. Of course, I'm not just gonna rely on this, but it'll definitely help quite a bit. Something to play between each song maybe. :]

I must admit I was skeptic about this video at the beginning but it proved to be a nice lesson, warm notes and a delight to learn this little secret. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, time and this great mood.

What are you talking about at 3:49? The G major chord is the fourth in the key of D major

Cyka Landon I noticed that as well. I think she just flustered herself, as she was trying to play and talk some theory at the same time. She correctly named G as the 4th(subdominant) chord earlier in the video.

She kept making the same mistake after that point. To clarify, in D maj, D=I G=IV A=V Bm=VIm
