I used to visit Camden Town more frequently when I was younger, as I had relatives in the area then. It used to fascinate me that they lived at what is still essentially the hub of the Northern Line, with the two Central Area branches coming together, and then diverging off again!!

Love every episode. Planning trip to London one day and started watching every underground train clip I could find and totally hooked on watching more. Looking for more abandoned platforms that know one can get to...love to see the full platforms that are still around and in the dark. I have ridden up front in the trains (KZbin style) been a passenger (KZbin) and have ridden the Aussie underground. Love the history and love the tiles and the engineering that has gone into building a network that moves millions of people around London everyday. By the way I live on a small island in the middle of the South Pacific and we do not have trains or public transport...simply do not need it...I Love trains, Planes and Engineering marvels.

The layout of the Camden Junction has been designed to offer minimum traffic disruption at maximum capacity: other than in simpler schemes, each train is able to pass it without interfering with any other trains, unless unavoidable (because they have the same destination). When looking at the track display in the signal box at 17:58 (with north on the right side), it comes as a surprise that it is not symmetric. Closer inspection reveals that the core of the northbound junction (top half of the display) mostly is a vertical flip of the southbound junction, rather than a 180°-rotated version of it (as found in comparable main line junctions, in which case it could have been symmetrical). The situation is complicated by the fact that, other than shown in the 2D-display, the northbound junction is actually located on top of the southbound one, and not next to it. The situation is even further complicated by the fact that, south of the junction, other than shown in the 2D-display, both tunnels of the Charing Cross branch are located on top of (and not next to) those of the Bank branch. The designers of the junction found an elegant solution to all these constraints in a very limited space under the street, a solution that still stands almost 100 years later.

Many thanks for a fascinating insight into the complexities of the Underground. I would like to say that it brought back memories of my only track walk except that as I was only six months old and mother had to do the walking. The train broke down and passengers were directed through the cars, down a set of steps to the track from the drivers cab and then along to the next station. Mother moaned about it for years. I should add that this event took place in about November 1943 when things were different.

I use to work London Transport over 30 years ago and during training we had to put a bar over both tracks to cut the power off but during training our trainer told us the small section in the training room was live and we had to get it right. Historically the Hampstead railway got there first and the CSL terminated at Euston so there was no concept of a Charing Cross branch. The enamel signs are for staff on foot. They might be walking Northbound on a Southbound tunnel or vice versa so drivers don’t usually see the signs. Only if the tunnel lights are on or a lovely member of Hidden London is filming! When the CSL was finally joined, more enamel signs were added. City or Hampstead, referring to the original railway companies. The “Charing Cross” branch was coined later on. Hope that makes sense.

@Lisbonized Жыл бұрын
In case an emergency rerail is needed during engineering hours, spare rails are always available in between the Negative rail and one of the running rails. But never both as it would make track walks nearly impossible. Abandoned stations have a lot more room for spare equipment. A spare set of points being left here for Camden Town makes a lot of sense as it can be carted down on an engineering train if needed. Hence the crane already in situ at Camden.

The Kings Cross Loop is used to transfer “engineering” trains to and from the Piccadilly line. It can, as Alex GS pointed out, be used to reverse “passenger” trains during traffic hours with passengers detrained before leaving Euston on the Southbound city platform. It is technically part of the Piccadilly line and so a “slot” is given by the Piccadilly line control centre for this move. The Piccadilly line doesn’t need to use the loop to reverse as it can be done using the crossover at Kings Cross.

Is there anything you guys don't know about the London underground system? 🏳🌈

Could you lot just decide who's going to speak and present each bit please. Talking over each other makes it come across like you are just a bunch of urban explorers which doesn't do justice to your knowledge or experience.

To be fair that’s easier said than done. I guess you mean create a segmented script and by doing so you’d lose all the spontaneity. This product is one with two audiences - new viewers can savour the view and go places they’re frankly forbidden from going. Regulars come for the fun and banter too. As a producer of radio and tv shows for years I have a few ideas for series 8 but none of us want to lose the spirit of joy and ‘of the moment reaction’ we have created since the start of the Hangouts. Glad you found us though. There’s a lot of this kind of stuff out there so thanks for tuning in. Happy New Year.

May I pass comment as an interested bystander independent of both of you? Sometimes we are reminded that we are lucky to live in a generally polite, respectful and diplomatic country, thankfully more than just this one on the planet too.. T'was a pleasure to read your thoughts, both. I reckon you're both right too. DJ, as you elegantly stated, we engaged members of the audience do get frustrated by the loss of nuggets of info from our hosts when they talk two at once. I completely agree that such attenuation does them no favours. Alex makes a fair point about the natural human bumping into one another, as it were, making the videos entertaining and real. (cf. my horror when Geoff Marshall let it be known in a recent offering that even the guest's answers to his questions are scripted!) much as I still find them visually interesting and he's still quite informative... Lastly, if you haven't done the Hidden London tours, you _absolutely_ should treat yourself. To many and several! Reason being, coming to Alex's point at last, is that they're full of gasps of *Oh my goodness. Look at... What? But...WOW!" tripping-over-yourself spontaneity. To script it would be joyless. As Alex says you just can't beat it. So, we have to like it, love it and occasionally lump it, I'd say.

After watching your video on Ruislip Met Line station, and all the mistakes, and misinformation you gave out, and ignored my corrections, and not even an acknowledgment, I wonder how many mistakes, and misinformation is going to be tendered to the public? I think i AM GOING TO HAVE TO BLOCK YOUR CHANNEL, EVEN THOUGH I LOVE THE SUBJECT, but you can't be trusted.

@@alexgrundon2346 Arrogance supreme. You insult Ruislip, you insult its history, you don't correct anything, don't admit your mistakes and errors, and laziness. ONE RUISLIP IN THE WORLD, and you can't even pronounce it correctly. A HAPPY and HOLY CHRISTMAS to you, with an acceptance of the REASON FOR THE SEASON.

This gratuitous insulting of Ruislip has got to stop!!
