Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials

Күн бұрын

Mastering painting shadows and highlights is the key to awesomely realistic and compelling paintings - this is an easy to understand art tutorial which will show you how it’s done! Follow me on Insty: / fieldey and sign-up to my MadSkillz MasterClub newsletter: www.fieldey.com... and get ready to take your art to the next level!
I’ll be giving away my surprising secret trick to painting shadows and highlights easily. I’ll also show you how to mix shadow colours without using black which makes colours muddy.
If you have any ideas for further Mad Skillz Masterclasses, leave a comment below. Also, if you followed this technique and you’re on Instagram I’d love to see the end result so be sure to tag #MadSkillzMasterclass or @fieldey
Mad Skillz Masterclass • Mad Skillz Masterclass... are a series of in-depth KZbin tutorials where I demonstrate some of my most popular art techniques for surfboards, skateboards, walls and canvasses… they’re also dead easy but super effective so that anyone can give them a go.
My name is Fieldey, I’m a surf, skate and street artist from Australia. I started this channel 5 years ago when I was an unhappy corporate designer yearning to become an artist. Since posting my very first video I’ve been on a crazy journey from teaching myself to paint surfboards and skateboards, to painting large-scale street art murals!
Turning my passion into a full-time career has been a massive learning curve and I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned, as well as inspire others who’re just starting out on their creative journeys.
I post on Saturday every fortnight, sometimes more, and you can expect to see easy to follow, Mad Skillz Masterclass tutorials, Artist Insider vlogs and inspirational projects that I’ve been working on.

Thanks for the advice Chandra - I only keep them up quickly to keep the video fairly quick, otherwise people tend to stop watching. It should still be possible to pause and take notes though?

@@FieldeyTV i was able to get it paused and screenshot them, but it took a few tries. Maybe they are just at a weird timestamp? The app tends to go back and forth in multiples of 15 seconds...idk if that has anything to do with anything. But, I have watched this video repeatedly to refresh my memory so i remember to actually put them into practice, and value the tips more every time

A brilliant lesson on shading. This has been difficult for me to learn and get right. Great ideas on shadows and highlights. Thing is, I already have the glazing medium you mentioned and zinc white, but this video is extremely helpful. Thanks! Prussian blue and raw umber, gotta try it today. Been using burnt umber, zinc white and glazing medium, but isn't quite right.

I work with digital art, and although i found the logic of highlights in your video applicable, i still dont understand the actual difference between direct light and highlight. As of now, i only know that highlights are concentrated points within your light family side of the object and not in the shadows. But what I still dont know, is how they move when the viewer moves. Ik that highlights move at a ratio between the light source and the viewer, but i dont exactly know what that angle is.

Awesome videos, thank you! I haven't got much experience with glazing mediums. When do you use it? With the first layers of paint or maybe some of the later layers - or just in special cases?
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! I don't tend to use it in the earliest stages as I put the paint on quite thick. I use it when I want a thin transparent layer of paint or I want to change the colour or keep the paint wet a bit longer. This video shows you a bit more how I use it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWLRiHuNj5llqtE&lc=z12gvpzykkrfdxtae04chh1qilbezfx5uas In regards to the supports, I like a really flat canvas so I pretty much always use Masonite board.

Dont know about everyone else but I'm struggling with shadow shade n highlights in a lot of references like blue hair the high lights are a turquoise colour and the shadows are a cooler blue. And Red the highights are orange/yellow and the shadows are darker cooler red?
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 4 жыл бұрын
That's it - you have to try and paint what you see rather than what you think you see if you know what I mean. You could try opening your reference in a photo editor and taking a colour sample with the eye-dropper tool, then make a square of that colour so you can match your paint against it and you don't get thrown by the rest of the image.

When I mix blue and orange (for blue shadows) it just makes a shockingly horrible green colour!? 😓
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, it could be the shade of blue and orange you're using, so try experimenting with different blues mixed with different oranges and then the next problem could be the amount of orange - just use a tiny amount - it won't make the blue "black" but it'll be useful for toning down the intensity of the blue.
