Throw away that nasty tube of "flesh colour" paint and learn how to mix realistic skin colours with acrylic, oil, or water colour paints! Follow me on Insty: / fieldey and sign-up to my MadSkillz MasterClub newsletter: www.fieldey.com... and get ready to take your art to the next level!
In this video I'll be discussing skin undertones - how skin can appear cool pink, warm yellow or blue black and I'll show which shades to mix to create these common colors.
I will show you a highlight colour, a mid-tone colour and a shadow colour for four different skin types: cool red fair (red heads), yellow based fair (olive skin), medium warm and also very dark.
The colours we'll be using are: Pyrrole Red, Cadmium Red Light, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber and Prussian Blue.

One of the best tutorials... to mix skin tones and a great display of swatches. Guides exactly how to get that tone. Thank you!

This is so great! I have been struggling with getting good bluish darker skin tones without having them just go green on me. Looks like I have to get some raw and burnt umber! Thanks so much! 😄👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

Ah! Interesting! What colours were you using? I know there are a lot of different ways to mix skin tones but I always find the burnt and raw umber pretty easy for nearly all skin tones - the burnt umber is a warmer tone and the raw is good for cooler tones.

I've been using a lot of prussian blue and some sienna like colors (especially Quinacridone burnt sienna) but I think those were too warm and yellowish, so they turned green. Raw umber seems like it is cool enough that won't happen.

According to Daniel Greene, who cracked The Old Masters palette, created a swatch of over 70 colors & values that all of them used. There are two types of skin tones & he found he could have duplicated “all of the directions of all those old masters’ skin tones using nothing other than black, white, red, & yellow.” Rembrandt didn't have or work with all these fancy colors we have today but somehow he worked it out rather well, I would say. A sampling of mixes used are Black+red+ white= Caput Mortuum (Cardinal Purple or Mummy Brown), Black+white=cool med. blue, Black +white+yellow=med. yellow green & Black+yellow+red=a burnt umber. So, yeah...don't be afraid to use a little Ivory black..if you want to paint like the greatest artists of all time, that is.

First off, thanks so much for all the great videos and tutorials! I've seen most of them several times. Could you possibly film a timelapse of a portrait with brown/dark skin in the future so we can see these tones at work?

It's interesting that you choose to use different brands of paint. Also most were tube colors except the Golden liquid raw umber. One company's raw umber (for instance) can be very different than an other one's. This is a very informative video. Well done!

Thanks for the comment Wade! It's more that those are the paints I had on hand at the time - I definitely know what you mean about the variations between the brands, the Liquitex Raw Umber is so different from the Windsor & Newton or the Golden one so I almost never use it.

What color variants would I need for a skin tone that is more ghoulish, such as vampires and the like?
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 8 жыл бұрын
Ooooo good question! If I wanted to make it greyer I'd use the first option (cool fair) and ditch the yellow and add more raw umber and blue and then more white to make it greyish. You could also experiment with adding a bit of green to make it greenish.

Congratulations for your work! I want to ask You something. I am painting a longboard table, and i am using acrylic paint. Do I need to know how to retreat all excess dried paint, but without ruining the play? can you tell me what to do?

can you suggest what kind of background should I paint for a portrait to show depression ?
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 7 жыл бұрын
+Saman Ashraf it really depends on what you think of when you think of depression. For me, I'd be inclined to go with very dark colours or deep inky, murky blues.

Hi fieldey! Would you be using these same paints when working on a mural piece to get the same skin tones on a larger scale? Or would you stick to the paints you mention in your other video about painting murals? Thanks!
@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for a mural you're a lot more limited - I have to just try my best with house paint colours which are not artist standardised.

@FieldeyTV
@FieldeyTV 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Talia, just experiment with the ratio of the yellow ochre and burnt umber for fair to mid yellow based skin. Maybe add a touch of the raw umber if it needs to be darker.
