Maybe you could even say that the element of love is used as the direct foil to its opposite, a sort of 6th element: Hate. You'd have a sort of pyramid / inverted pyramid, the base of the 4 elements being a simple square until the diametrically opposed 5th and 6th elements are brought to bear, creating the pyramids of equal, yet opposing force.

Apparently the writer wrote the outline as a 3 parter similar to lotr but the but the studio didnt want it. Sequels are generally fine if the are written together imo.

@@superomegaprimemk2 The reason being is that the costs of making movies has become exorbitant and a s result, the big studios have become risk adverse and thus rather stick to things that they think will pretty much be a safe bet. That, and the international market, China in particular, has really become a big part of Hollywood's movie making strategy, which is why there are so many reboots, they're old to us but new to the Chinese and other people overseas. It's also why a lot of big movies these days are big on action and short on story, because action translates universally across all languages.

What I find interesting is the very first murder of the movie... The archaeologist, killed by the Mondochiwans. They killed an unarmed man, for absolutely no reason. The priest was trying to kill the guy as well by poisoning the water. If evil begets evil, then the movie starts off with an act that would be considered evil. This is even acknowledged by the assistant who called them monsters. At what point does an evil act lead to an act to preserve good? Leeloo fights, but it's unknown if she actually killed anyone. The beam of light from her at the end may not have been a weapon by definition but more of an equal opposite just neutralizing the evil and not destroying it. Similar to baking soda in hydrochloric acid. Making something inert is not destruction.

ok, interesting take...too bad every word of your premise is entirely wrong. the old priest was going to drug them (not poison) to sleep so they would not see the arrival of the Mondochiwans {you would know this, if you read the book released with the movie all those years ago} (priests aren't exactly known as blatant murderous bastards throughout history....extreme buggerers...yes, cold blooded killers...no). the Archeologist was not killed, just rendered unconscious by the advanced superior technology of the mondochiwans. During the first 45 minutes of the film, it was established that the mondochiwans were an extremely peaceful race that abhorred violence as a solution, so why in the hell would they, an actively peaceful race, resort to murder when their technology was extremely capable of incapacitating (not murdering) a lifeform into unconsciousness. they made the old fart professor faint into unconsciousness with a little red light. the first act of violence in the film was when billy pulled the german pistol, and accidentally fired it when he tripped backwards on the dig site gear causing the large metal weeble wobble alien to get pancaked into the door. seriously? that's what you took away from watching the movie? it's like we watched two entirely different movies...

As the priest prayed for forgiveness prior to pouring the contents of the flask into the cup and the assistance yelling, "They killed the professor! They're monsters." There is nothing in that scene indicating that the professor is alive. Now if there is something I missed in my memory about that specific scene to indicate otherwise I would love to know.

@@jaspr1999 ok, then....when the priest prayed for forgiveness, it was because he was about to commit a dishonorable act against a close friend (as per the book), which, in old middle eastern cultures was considered a very bad thing in the eyes of their gods, and your entire argument was struck down when the mondochiwan commander stated "time is not important, only life is important." before getting pancaked in the wall. a species who values the concept of protecting life above all else, would not randomly off some curious old guy just because he happened to stumble across their super secret squirrel snack chamber. They were the superior technologically advanced civilization appearing in a, to them, primitive backwater planet full of life where they chose to hide their ultimate weapon against evil. (plus the book describes the knockout act as a neural disruption beam to pacify hostile forces by basically putting them to sleep....) The professor didn't die, he was put to sleep for his own safety, and Billy reacted with that very human attribute of "overreact, jump to conclusions, and shoot first" You know how i know the professor didn't die? the book that the priest Vito Cornellius reads from and shows pages to the prez was partially written using the archeologists notes and panel drawings from billy (if you have a really good hi-def 4k tv, and a great player you can pause/advance on pages of the open book to see the signatures of both the professor and billy on certain pages) . they contributed to the sum of knowledge of that religious order...hell, they were probably recruited after that incident INTO the order to protect the secrets, but mostly, your premise died when the mondo said "time is not important, only life is important."

@@jaspr1999 the book is good, it fills in A LOT of the missing backstory, and reasons for everyone doing everything. The movie was a glossover camp fest which made it great, and the book just fills in all the gritty realism that was missing in the film. I think the most disturbing implication in the book, was the concept of how cheap a life had become. like how a criminal would be killed, slapped into a tube, rushed to a nucleo lab, rebuilt, only to be executed again as part of their punishment, lather, rinse, repeat. It was sad dystopian futurism with a dash of glam. that's why the movie is so good, all the ugly is painted over with garrish lifestyles, excessive architecture, and a false sense of opulence that thinly veneers the societal rot underneath.

Actually they do, remember Dallas was employed by Zorg and Zorg has one of his henchmen try to steal Dallas's identity to get on the ship. I think you mean they never meet face to face, but both definitely do know of each other.

Cornelius is more 'passive' because his role was to protect the secret (Like his predecessors) concerning the weapon until the Montigewans return it to earth for use. That plan appears to go pear-shaped thanks to Zorg and co, but the forces of good have already jumped ahead of what he's up to, so the one unexpected 'element' in the story is Corbyn Dallas, who chooses to side with Lilu for the oldest reason in the book (surely, the reason for life) - love, which ends up saving the universe. The 'big' themes of the story really revolve around that. There's a wonderful line when Zorg's goons arrive at Conrelius' residence and he opens the door to them and asks "Weddings?', repeating what he said to Corbyn when he arrives with Lilu. Actually, that's the key - the 'marriage' had already taken place between these two because of what had unfolded in the cab (as Corbyn declares in his call to his buddy)... the rest, as they say is merely icing the cake.

it was never a weapon. In the classic yin yang symbol at the point where one color is strongest is the point where the other color starts. The five symbolic elements were not a weapon but just the spark for change. The great evil is not killed but shows up some where else where the great good is at its strongest and the cycle continues

In the beginning of the movie they did say it was a cycle lasting 5000 years. What they didn't ever cover was that if evil "won" and all life was destroyed would some "good" force appear 5000 years later and attempt to bring life again? If so it would certainly reinforce the idea that both forces must exist in balance.

Let me play Devil's advocate, here :) Not attacking the evil mass was the right call. You can't defend yourself, unless you're being attacked. Rather than listening to the priest, they decided to attack the evil mass without provocation, and as a result, their battleship and all her hands were incinerated. In response to your 5th element weapon question, the difference could be that the 5th element weapon only works against the evil mass, whereas the evil mass weapon has no such restrictions and can destroy anything. Of course he saved Zorg, it isn't for the priest to decide who is or isn't worthy to live. Do you think the priest should let everything die, just in case it tries to do something evil, in the future? It seems obvious that saving Zorg's life was a life saving action. Zorg can't change his ways and do the right thing, if the priest lets him die. Of course, Zorg isn't going to do the right thing, but the Priest doesn't know that, so he saves his life, as the potential first step toward saving Zorg's soul, it seems. peace

I agree. Morals aren't moral if you can't apply them on both large and small scales. If something is wrong in the small scale but right in the large scale (letting Zorg die) then it's still wrong. Most of these supposed paradoxes are resolved if you acknowledge that free will (or liberty) is a right. If Zorg dies he no longer has the choice to do right or wrong. Willfully denying him that choice is wrong unless you have been specifically authorized by society to punish those who break the law.

Mega-points for Chick but I gotta giggle a little after reading AJ's response. As if society somehow is the great moral adjudicator. Society's laws create it's own mixed bag of paradoxes... the easiest example here being govmnt sponsored murder. it's also a shame we have such difficulty separating a strong moral code from organized religion. If that were possible, he could've let zorg die without the need for govmnt blessing or fear of angering an uninterested god... just walk away recognizing the countless lives that will never know they were saved by a cherry.... and a man brave enough to walk away. On Zorg's right to do good.... well, he would've had many opportunities before that and, well, he preached his moral code. "Live by the sword, die by the pit" seems true enough to me.

As could self preservation, he probably wouldn’t have been able to leave the place alive if he came out of the meeting with Zorg dead. (I doubt the “he choked on a cheery explanation would be believed). Saving him was, imo, the right thing to do and I’m not religious. I just think all life has value. Would I have let him choke? Probably, even though I believe saving him was “right”. That probably shows, by my standards, I’m far from perfect. I continue to try to live up to my values through (often failing). I don’t believe in heaven or being rewarded for good deeds when I pass, more just to be proud of what I see in the mirror with regards my values. Nonetheless, keeping on topic, he does make some dogmatic references as well so I'd be pretty comfortable w betting that even if his personal morals made him take action, his moral code was influenced in a major way by the scriptures he surrounded himself with on a daily basis. It's just a movie, though. It's nice to know, though, that even if you think I wronged you, there's a good possibility you won't just let me die.

Saving Zorg keeps the Great Evil at bay because Mr. Shadow was relying on Zorg to recover the Elements. Letting Zorg die there would have gotten the Great Evil to accelerate, like it did when Zorg died and Corben got the Elements.

Father Cornelius is almost comically pacifistic, except for when he smashes Corben's trophy over his head... also Corben looks like he's from Florida with the frosted tips. Zork is also comically evil, but somehow it all just fits together. The Film itself is oddly well balanced

Glad you focused on Cornelius and Zorg's dialog! It's the most important scene in the film, if not it's most awe-inspired or entertaining: We get a playfully nuanced interpretation of destruction and creation, not only the barebones contrast of evil vs. good. This pair of veteran actors have a little fun; Oldman adopting an implacable accent in his oddest characterisation.

It was planned. The concept art and some genral story beats came from one of the founding artists of Heavy Metal magazine, Mobius. They had a larger scope in mind during development to cover other worlds and stories. Shame it never became a featured graphic novel.

I think that she knew she was going to die (hence the fact that there was only ever going to be one performance). Cornelius was black and white, the Mondoshawan are far more pragmatic about things (hence the fate that befalls the archaeologist at the start of the movie). Leeloo was on her first outing in forever and as such was a blank slate, hence the disillusionment.

For what it is worth, Zorg is often shown with a halo around his head in the form of a glowing blue circle or golden round portal behind him.

I posit that when a star "explodes" its not being destroyed, its being transformed. Transformation (or transmutation) is the third force present in the dynamic between destruction and creation. Thus things in the universe are not really destroyed, at least not by the cycle of nature, but changed. Destruction then is not part of the cycle itself, not a part of nature, but a concept or manifestation of non-existence, and thus not really a "force". True destruction would then be the antithesis of the natural forces in the universe, since nihilation would then be truly something "outside" of the universe. I think that is what's been portrayed in the movie then. A "being" manifested within the universe, true nothingness, and what we observe then is the matter or the universe itself being deleted at the focal point. When Lilu releases the energy of creation, she "plugs" the hole in the fabric of reality, replacing the void with a new piece of reality, the moon is then just a byproduct of her reconstruction. Whatever matter was in the process of being unmade around the "hole" just collapses into a ball of dust, rock and ship pieces. That is my interpretation of what occurs in the Fifth Element, which really is love, or spirit, or whatnot, feminine force? That is another theme of the movie. Female creates and nurtures and male protects and transmutes, both forces then exist in harmony and balance, even within a singular person, we all carry both the female and male elements, since we can all create and transform. The protagonists represent these elements, at first in their "pure forms", but without their combining and evolving neither of them can complete the quest and save the universe. Of course the elements of female and male are not the same as gender, since we all have them and are more of a spiritual concept than a physical one, they just happen to be better understood when depicted in the duality of boy and girl.

In my opinion, Leeloo is not refusing to help in the scene before she "takes care of evil". She educates Corben for him to reach the correct conclusion. They both know 'Love' but Corben needed to know how important it is.

sorry but i think you kinda missed the point, the whole idea is just that the only thing that can truelly defeat evil, is love. exact same story as in star wars, ultimatly what end up both saving anakin and destroying the empire is the mutual love between anakin and luke.

Well the "ultimate weapon" doesn't destroy the ultimate evil - it _changes it._ Into moon 2.0. The ultimate evil doesn't seem to destroy so much as consume, like a black hole. The missiles the humans throw at it just... vanish, and the evil gets bigger. It would probably consume earth, not transform it into a dead rock.

I had issues with the audio. I could hear Ben speak but the movie clips were so low as to be silent and after that happened twice I decided it wasn't worth chasing the volume up and down. So I'll take your word for it.

I am a sci-fi fan. I like serious science fiction, like Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Blade Runner, etc. Fifth Element does not reach their levels, IMO. YET, I have watched Fifth Element more times. WHY?? It is just so much damn fun. True, I could, like you, apply my cerebral cortex and analyze it. And, you have shown it holds up to that. BUT, you don't have to do that to enjoy it. Chris Tucker adds nothing to the story, the plot, or the underlying themes. However, he adds humor, texture, and depth. He steals his scenes. What a great character.

There is a difference between Chaotic and Evil...a chaotic force can be good or evil just as a lawful force can be good or evil. The Mondoshawans are Lawful Good. They believe in saving the universe and do not raise a hand to attack nor defend themselves. They believe in sacrificing themselves for the greater good. They would rather jump in front of the bullet than shoot back or hide. Cornelius is Neutral Good, he is trying to do good in a neutral way. He will not get his hands dirty but will not be against others getting their hands dirty. Hence why he sees the weapon as a good thing but does not dare go on the quest to put it together himself. Eventually, when he is called upon, he steps up and takes a swing. Dallas and Leeloo are Chaotic Good. Their cause is for good but they can get destructive to see their mission completed and they don't see that as evil. If they have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet, they are the first ones to start cracking. (I personally fall in this category) Zorg is Lawful Evil, he is evil in its purest form in a man. He looks at it in a way that he thinks he is good or lawful, this is why he is rich and in control of a large corporation. He thinks what he does is righteous but deep down he does it for selfish and egotistical reasons. The Mangalores are Chaotic Evil. They will kill for selfish reasons, attack from behind, and are generally not pleasant to be around. Of course, it's not that simple. In each situation, the characters act in different alignments than in the ones I put them in above but they never stray from the good to the evil side and vice versa. One of my favorite movies, you had a great take on it 👍

Umm, no love is the 5th element. You put water o the water stone fire on the fire stone and so on so you love the warrior and thus activating her and by extension the weapon. He didn't convince her, he activated her. He activated her like the stones were activated by their complimentary elements and the element that activated her was love.

You should read the recluse books by L.E. Modesette. The major theme of those books is that chaos (destruction) and law (order) are inherently at war, and inherently balanced. That an excess of one in an area, necessitates an excess in the other somewhere else. And that balance of order and chaos should be the true aim of society. A society that is pure chaos is just super violent and cannot proceed as they eat themselves. Whereas pure order is stagnant, and impotent. So you need chaos tempered with order to advance as a society. And Chris Tucker owned that movie. That was the best character in the film, and pretty much owned every scene he was in.

One thing that's very interesting to me, is how the planets line up. The "evil" ball of fire charges forward at exactly the right time, to line up with the weapon. Which says to me, every inch of the story was pre-meditated. That's really the question that will cook your noodles. Had it taken a few minutes longer, or shorter to be activated, the light of creation coming from Leeloo and the stones would miss the ball of fire, due to the Earth's rotation.
