Hi Peter! My name is Hugo and I'm from México. Watching this video has really broken my heart at remembering these three iconic ships. I live in Acapulco and I still remember when these ships were in port at the time. I have to mention that in 1986 when I was 16 I had the chance to come on board both the Pacífic and the Island while the were docked. I never got on board the Sun Princess though but I remember seeing her at the dock in the early 80's. In 1990 when I was 20, I worked on board the first Sky Princess (formerly Sitmar Firsky). Then the following year I worked on the beautiful Royal Princess for two years in a row. I still remember seeing the Pacífic and The Island on different ports around the Caribbean and other places. I remember watching the TV series The Love Boat in the late 70's when I still was a kid. I was really sad to know that these ships were broken apart. I've seen some pictures of both Pacífic and Island that I found in internet. As far as I know the Sun Princess ended up half sunk somewhere in Taiwan, correct me if I'm wrong. As a memory I Will mention one time some time in the 80's the captain of the Pacífic Princess took the ship so close to The cliffs because I think he wanted the passengers to watch the famous cliff divers. Anyway, the thing is that the ship ended up hitting a rock and a big hole was made open on the ship's side. So they had to return to Port inmediately and the ship stayed for a whole week so that the hole could be repaired and then the ship be taken to an inmediate dry dock in Los Angeles, I think. Did you ever know that? Anyway I really appreciate this video and the others you have shared. I'm sending You My regards from Acapulco, México. Buon Voyage!!

Hi Peter, I just watched this episode and very much enjoyed it. I was a ‘second officer’ on the original Island Princess you referred to and I am now a Captain. What may not have been apparent was that back then, Princess was operated as part of the Passenger Division of P&O. So you could be assigned to a Princess ship or P&O Cruises ship. SS. Canberra was the flag ship of the fleet at the time. P&O had an enormous influence on Princess and still does. The rising sun on the stem of all Princess ships is actually a P&O symbol. The Princess officers and petty officers cap badges use the blue, white, red and yellow from the P&O house flag. You may recall that back then, there was a fourth Princess ship; the original Sea Princess (former Kungsholm). She sailed in P&O livery from Australia and the UK but adopted the Princess livery when sailing from the US. One note of trivia but a nice touch if you think ships have a sole, is that the ship with the red funnel next to the Pacific Princess at the scrap yard in Turkey was the original Sky Princess. At least they had a friend during their demise. Yours aye, Ivan

Dear Captain Witt, What a wonderful message to see this morning! Thank you so much for posting here! I love the P&O ships, especially the post war liners from HIMALAYA through CANBERRA, the Orient liners from ORCADES through ORIANA and CATHAY and CHITRAL. The first ship other than QUEEN MARY that I visited was the ARCADIA and she set the standard for what I have always felt is the perfect liner. And, of course, I loved the first SEA PRINCESS, having been fortunate enough to see her first as KUNGSHOLM and many times during her calls at Los Angeles in the 80s and early 90s. I sailed on her final cruise as VICTORIA from Southampton to Civitavecchia and would have seen her at Alang were it not for a terrorist attack that made security almost impossible at the time of her scrapping. In the video, you can see one of the signs from her cinema on "The Love Boat" patio. There is also a small cocktail table from there, as well. In other parts of my home, I have her two builder's plates from John Brown and some of the crystal ceiling lights from her observation lounge in the kitchen. Of course, I would have loved to talk about more ships during the presentation but there was only so much time. In any case, thank you so very, very much for posting and for your kind comments. PS. Yes, indeed, I wanted to go aboard the former FAIRSKY/SKY PRINCESS at Aliaga but it ended up being too dangerous. So strange how some of these ships ended their careers "together". STAR PRINCESS and CROWN PRINCESS at Alang, etc.

Peter, excellent video. Thank you for all you do in documenting this history. I recall that during the filming of The Love Boat, there were some episodes with shots of the Sea Princess as well. This was the former Kungsholm that was heavily modified.

Hi John! Thank you so much. Yes, SEA PRINCESS was featured in the Australia episodes and other ships like STELLA SOLARIS, VIStAFJORD and ROYAL VIKING SEA were also used in latter day episodes when the Love Boat began traveling to new vistas. I basically kept this presentation to the three original Princess ships used in the series but of course, the others came to play later in the game. :)

Just one correction, both the Island and Pacific Princess capacity were even less then what you stated. It was only 626 passengers not 750.
