Oh wow this is a cool one. I love the countermelody you wrote. Do you have an example of a pop punk or punk rock song with a good example of countermelody? Can’t think of one off the top of my head. Keep up the awesome work

Thanks! The solo section of I You Don't, Don't y Jimmy Eat World is a good example of one. You have the solo that's made up of two octave guitars playing harmonies, and then the vocals come in a little later as a countermelody to this. In a lot of cases the countermelody may be played on a different instrument to the main melody - so think guitar & vocals, bass and guitar, etc. You'll find their often used in a lot of punk / pop punk bass playing too, like Holiday in Cambodia or Sassafras Roots.

Love the video as always! I was also wondering on a separate note if you had any favorite guitar rig amp sim presets or effects you use to get your awesome tones!

Thanks, I appreciate it! Pretty much all my tones come from my Axe FX these days. I'll occasionally re-amp some tracks with Neural DSP or Guitar Rig, but 95% of the time it'll be the Axe FX you're hearing.

Another great video thank you!! The counter melody changes the quality so much, appreciate you teaching all these techniques 🤘🏼 you’ve probably posted this already but do you have any recommendations for bands with consistently great counter melody writers/players that really stand out to you? Thanks again!!

Thanks a lot! Los Campesinos & American Football would probably be two of my favourites for that sort of thing.

Thanks! I don't think I did anything with it beyond these examples. They were just written for demonstration purposes.

Man, your videos sound sooo good!!! How do you mix your songs? How do they sound so good? When I record music in my bedroom, it is cool but I just don’t know how to mix/produce my songs properly. And that’s annoying because then it sounds like shit :( Maybe I don’t know how to use my EQ but I don’t find any videos in the internet too… But I love your videos about bass and punk and stuff 🫶🤘🎸

Hey Quentin! Mixing is such a broad topic that it would be difficult to break everything down into one single concise video. Is there a specific area you're struggling with currently? As a general piece of advice, I'd suggest practicing as much as you possibly can. Mixing is really no different from learning an instrument; the more time you put into it, the better you'll become. There's definitely something to be said for how long it takes to develop an ear for things too. Hearing nuances like compression and saturation usually doesn't happen overnight-you've just got to put in the hours, and eventually, you'll start to see improvements in each song you finish. If you're recording your own stuff, then hopefully you'll have enough material to work with. If not, try checking out Cambridge Music Technology-it's a great website that has tons of free multitracks you can download and practise with. I'd also recommend referencing your favorite mixes while working on your own songs. It acts as a palate cleanser and helps you stay focused. Try not to get too discouraged when things don't sound exactly like your favorite records-I think most mixers, myself included, are never completely satisfied with the outcome and always want to do better each time. It's a totally normal feeling to have. If you have any further questions, feel free to reply, or you can always reach out via email. I hope some of this was helpful to you!
