This is my first time to hear Harumi-san speak so much English. As a linguist I find her accent wonderfully unidentifiable. There are bits of Mandarin phonology and bits of Japanese, crating a beautiful accent that is simultaneously in two places, yet also nowhere 🙂

Harumi makes wearing kimono seem less intimidating and easy to adjust to personal comfort! Great demonstration and explanation!

One of my favorite things about kimono is that you adjust each minor element to your liking. The kimono may have been tailored in a general shape but when you wear it, you own it completely.

I watched a video explaining how as women would always be pregnant and their figures constantly changing, all clothing had to function as 'maternity wear' and it has completely changed my view on women's fashion history. Clothing was very expensive back then so one of the primary functions of kimono was to be comfortable for women at all stages of pregnancy.

First, congratulations to you both! I am so glad you did this video. Although I'm not pregnant, I do have problems wearing kimono because I am very much larger than Japanese women usually are. Most kimono don't close properly on me and I've had issues moving around without unwanted exposure. I had hopes Harumi's methods might help, but alas they don't--however, it was very informative and fun to watch. I had wondered how a kimono might solve the problem. Thank you for a fun video.

You can get kimono specially tailored for your size. I'm on the bigger side too, and I was in Kyoto looking at kimono when the saleswoman said they could sew one specifically for me. The problem was I was only there for the day, and the timelines (and finances, bc not cheap - looking at the equivalent of a couple of thousand dollars for a custom kimono, and this was in 2009) didn't work out (takes 2 weeks), but it is doable...
@DannyJane.2 жыл бұрын
@@kme I am aware of having kimono specially made and the next time I'm in Kyoto I plan to. However, it doesn't solve the problem of the kimono I already have. Two of them are so small they don't even close--let alone overlap. I do sew, therefore I'm looking for ways to combine the two of them into one single, wearable kimono. Do you know of anyone who has done this?

I know this may sound silly or too personal a question, but seeing her so heavily pregnant made me curious about how women use the restroom while wearing a kimono. Especially, since pregnancy increases the frequency of it. Do they have to untie it every time or is there some trick to it?
@Black_Samurai-fish2 жыл бұрын
You just pull it up. I believe there’s videos on KZbin about it actually. I’m 22 weeks and wear kimono and it’s easy to do. Although still annoying to need to pee every 5 minuets 😂 it helps to tuck the kimono into the top of the Obi to hold it up so it’s more hands free.

Harumi looks beautiful (as always) and I love her commentary and explanations, she always makes things look and sound so easy. I'm curious if the towels/extra padding over the chest feels uncomfortable during Japan's hot and humid summers since I have trouble finding bras that are comfy enough in that kind of weather.
@midori38802 жыл бұрын
Does the higher obi/waistbands underneath ever bother her chest? I know some women get very sensitive when pregnant and was wondering if the top line of the obi ever dug in uncomfortably and, if so, how does she deal with it?

An interesting question we do not see brought often, but which has a bunch more specifics than we may think of before we can say "yes". Thank you for this video, Shogo-san and Harumi-san, and congratulations for your third baby! 😊 A question comes to my mind out of curiosity. But I wonder if the average difference of 20% in size in case of a twin pregnancy would make a big difference in how the kimono is worn along with those extra pieces to ease onto the belly. I will probably look it up while I am onto the question. In any case, best wishes for the months to come to you two! :D

Scary when it happened of course, but now laughs about it. 😂 She was wearing it because her sister was getting married. She told me she tied her kimono a bit loose too, but you couldn't tell it in photos. She sent me one and she looked so gorgeous like Harumi does in this video. And a late congratulations 🎊
