Set amidst COVID-19 arriving in Arizona, "The Seeds Our Ancestors Planted" is an inspiring short film that follows student Kai Begay as he joins a growing food renaissance across Navajo Nation.
The film is followed by a panel discussion with filmmakers, producers, and local food champions who were featured in and created the film:
- Jonathan and Phefelia Nez, former president and first lady of the Navajo Nation
- Kai Bega, mechanical engineering student at Northern Arizona University
- Shonri Begay, film producer, and local food advocate
- Oakley Anderson-Moore, filmmaker, Little Sure Shot Films
- Al Reinhard, filmmaker, Little Sure Shot Films
- Neal Barnard, MD, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
The Seeds Our Ancestors Planted was filmed by Oakley Anderson-Moore and Kai Begay. Thumbnail artwork by Faith Begay.

Wow, what a powerful story. Amazing families, so happy to see plant based programs that exist for our vulnerable communities. I'm in tears and feeling inspired and hopeful. :)

Wasn’t it Chief Seattle that said “What We Do To The Land, We Do To Ourselves” The original edible plant foods came from the land and we have ultra processed these plants to any thing but recognizable as real food that the land naturally provides us.

Thank you for documenting this amazing project. All of it is so inspiring, from its quiet inception to its near end because of COVID, to decolonizing and reclaiming of ancestral ways and to regaining of health and well-being. This is powerful and radical change you have made and are making!

That government subsidized food should have been marked "Disease in a Box." The labels reminded me of the generic food in Repo Man. Good job on the doc!

Love this! So uplifting! Keep up the healthy lifestyle! I'm rooting for you! I switched to whole food plant based eating June 12, 2020, after one of my brothers had a heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure diagnoses and quadruple bypass surgery. We both went plant based and he is much better now. I lost the Covid lockdown weight plus unneeded pounds, and most likely dodged a stroke or heart attack as well since I began to feel a few uncomfortable symptoms and was told I was prediabetic. I have a better memory now, more energy, and at age 63, do not take any prescription meds as many of the people my age do.

This was good to watch. I am not First Nation but I work at a Tim Horton’s in Northern Ontario. Many on our reserve are diabetic and we live 70 Km’s from town where healthy food can be bought. There is lots of junk food and unhealthy food right on the reserve. I sell it,but I eat Plant Based.

Day 3 of 12 days of Christmas challenge complete ✔️ 👌. There was a definite burn on the booty 🍑 with this workout. Used the booty band where I could to add to the burn. The balances were super fun and a little bit wobbly 😆. Thank you Jacinta.
