The Seekers performed 6 songs at Expo '67 in Montreal, as part of the Australian section featured that year. This song was co-written by Paul Simon & Bruce Woodley (who sings lead here). The complete performance is now available as a bonus DVD with 'Hidden Treasures Vol 2', which is the second of 3 special Seekers 'rarities' releases by Decca. The CD/DVD features superb live performances and the set is well worth buying! I've upmixed the mono sound to stereo using digital separation, more videos from Judith and The Seekers on the playlists below:

I was at Expo '67 when I was 6 years old. Sure wish I could say I remember this but my memories going that far back are pretty vague. I just remember sitting listening to some music that seemed really pleasing to me, and would like to THINK it was the Seekers!!

What a wonderful time. When people who sang actually had talent. So sad to hear of Judith‘s passing away on August 5, 2022. Her body grew tired over the years, but her voice always carried on and she still sounded great. What a wonderful lady she was.

For a “bad end of a relationship” song, this is so upbeat and catchy!
@G6JPG
@G6JPG 2 жыл бұрын
There's something about ending relationships that often makes for upbeat music! A _lot_ of (for example) Abba's songs are actually about sad subjects (including breakups), but you'd never know if you just paid attention to the tunes.
@marc21091
@marc21091 Жыл бұрын
The principle of sad songs with upbeat music was a principle of the 'yé-yé' pop songs of France in the sixties, especially those composed and sung by Francoise Hardy. Hardy's songs (in french and English) have her trademark sad romantic character but are often in this style. The most successful Canadian singer-writer of the 2010s, Coeur de Pirate (Béatrice Martin) has discussed this often and some of her hit songs have a similar contrast between subject and tempo. Find them on KZbin, many times.

I love Judith Durham & The Seekers! I was born in 1961 and grew up listening to all 60's & 70's music! But even though Bruce Woodley of The Seekers helped co-write this song, I don't think The Seekers version ever charted. The most popular version of this song was recorded by The Cyrkle that reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966.
@Puppydoug
@Puppydoug 2 жыл бұрын
The Seekers version of Red Rubber Ball didn't make the charts because it was never released as a 45 RPM single. It's a track off their 1966 album "Come The Day" (AKA in the USA as "Georgy Girl"). That album certainly DID chart!

Wow, I remember well the World Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada. Seekers are a very likeable musical group for me. At that time, Czechoslovakia came to Montreal with a complete world cultural novelty - Laterna magica. A very successful combination of film and theater together on one stage. I don't know if Seekers met our exhibitors and Laterna magica in Montreal. Maybe the Seekers got inspired and recorded a concert or at least a song with Laterna magica. If such a record exists somewhere, please send me a link. Judith Durham: "Rest in Peace!"
