@edwest22633 жыл бұрын
From a high level, the architecture of the 32X was similar to the Saturn, which made it very difficult to program for. Like the Saturn, you had to run your code on two VDPs. While Saturn had a VDP dedicated to rendering backgrounds, the 32X needed to rely on the Genesis VDP for background rendering. If you look at Virtua Racing's 2D background, you can see a lot of dithering. This is because the Genesis handled rendering that image, and could only show a fraction of the colors on-screen that the 32X could. The 32X handled rendering the flat shaded polygons. The 32X VDP used a frame buffer, basically dedicated VRAM for holding pixel color values. You'd write each frame to be rendered to the frame buffer, which would be sent as an analog signal during the VSYNC. It was a much more modern approach still used today, it also differentiated PCs from consoles at the time. But it was much slower the home console approach of keeping the image in-sync with the TV beam. Brutal got the approach completely backwards, and used the 32X to render the BG and Genesis to render low color sprites. Same with pitfall. Which is why both have lower frame rates than the Genesis versions. The Saturn gets a lot of well deserved criticism for how terribly designed its hardware is from a developer perspective. But the 32X was even worse. Much worse. There is no way it could have succeeded, even if Sega had put all of its weight behind it.
@edwest22633 жыл бұрын
@@FloridaEbikes Nope Saturn programming was always going to be a pain because of the two VDPs. Also using quads (basically sprites that were scaled and deformed) instead of polys was another fatal choice.
@maroon92733 жыл бұрын
@@edwest2263 also the master/slave sh2's set up and the unused dsp were difficult to program. Sega was mimicking multi processor in there arcade boards. In theory, multiprocessor harfwarr specs are powerful but in reality it is difficult to program and half ass games. That's why Multiprocessor in a console do not work.

I've been waiting for this like Saturn gamers waiting for a Sonic game.
@kellinwinslow19883 жыл бұрын
@Gaylord Focker Well the Saturn could have done far better. The PS1 was huge no doubt,but Sega lost the fight before the PS1 even got that big. In 96' they had a chance. For awhile they were neck and neck. But instead of following up with classic franchises like Streets Of Rage,Phantasy Star,and many others,they allowed Sony to pull ahead. The fact that the PS1 was easier to make games for didn't help with third parties either. A lot of people felt burned by the 32X and a lot of stores were burned by Sega in general. So people were ready for something different and Sony just happened to be in the right place to take advantage of that. I played the Saturn exclusively up to around 97' or so but when games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Resident Evil 2 came out I knew it was over. Although I still picked up Enemy Zero,Panzer Dragoon Saga and Magic Knight Rayearth for the Saturn in 98'.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
@@kellinwinslow1988 First of all let me say I hope you kept Magic Knight Rayearth and Panzer Dragoon saga as you could put a mortgage down on a house for what they're worth now. But secondly for me the Saturn never really had a chance. The launch was completely botched in the US. Everyone remembers that now infamous moment where the Sony got up to the podium and mearly said $299 and then left. Sega pissed off retailers, pissed off sports fans, pissed off Sonic fans and just generally dropped the ball completely when dealing with Sony and the PlayStation. It didn't help that the Saturn was a pain in the ass to develop for either but it was just yet another of the thousand cuts that killed the Saturn.
@kellinwinslow19883 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Yes that's exactly what I was saying. Sega messed up the race before they could even get into second gear. And yes I still have Saga and Rayearth along with about 100 other Saturn games.

@@kellinwinslow1988 PS1 and Saturn were never neck and neck in the US. Sega knew they were going to be in trouble, which is why they panicked and rushed it out as a surprise launch. even in the first year it was clear PS1 had beaten Saturn. gaming publications thought the same. I think gamers only had hope in the Saturn before launch, but once PS1 hit it was clearly over. It was never close. some held out hope for Sonic Xtreme, which never came. all hope was lost once N64 showed up in stores.
@kellinwinslow19883 жыл бұрын
@@edwest2263 No actually when Sega released Virtua Cop,Sega Rally,Nights and Virtua Fighter 2 it was very close. Sony didn't really pull away in sales by big numbers until late 96' to 97' when they had Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7. I remember when it happened. It was a shame but them releasing it early wasn't a panic move. They actually thought it was a smart move that would give them a leg up on Sony but it wasn't well thought out enough. It was just a typically Sega move. They would have done it no matter who they were up against. I never had any hope for the Sonic game. The N64 sold but it wasn't really a problem. It also didn't sell well and if Sega had played their cards right it was very possible to out sell the N64. That was the beginning of the end for Nintendo's dominance for quite awhile. No the only problem was Sony. No one saw that coming,no one thought they could even stand up to the other established game makers. Not seeing that was their downfall.

Fun fact sell wise the 32X was the best selling 5th Generation system in 1994 with 600,000 sells in the US compared to the 500,000 Sega Saturn sells in Japan and the 300,000 Playstation sells in Japan. In my opinion the US launch title line up on the 32X was better than the Launch title line up of the Japanese Saturn and Japanese Playstation. Im sure there is someone that worked with Sega that believes it was just not a good move to stop the support of the 32X in the US. In Japan fine but in the US if they would have kept supporting the system and putting out software. Who knows the 32X possibly could have outsold and been more popular than the Saturn here in the US. Not hating on the Saturn because its one of my favorite Systems of all time but I my self was very pleased and blown away with the 32X when my Parents bought me one in 94'. We were blown away by Virtura Racing Deluxe (which in my opinion is the best Virtura Racing port between the Genesis, 32X and Saturn). The 32X also arguably has the best Virtura Fighter 1 port too. Much Props to Sega Of America they knew what they were doing with the 32X. Even though the Sega Saturn launch in Japan was successful it was not more successful than the 32X launch around the same time in the US. Much respect to Sega as a whole they were killing it sell wise in 1994 with the 32X in the US and Sega Saturn in Japan.

I absolutely loved WWF The Arcade Game on the Genesis and I didn't even like Wrestling (just regular fighting games, which were scarce if you weren't rich and owned a Neo Geo).

Is your 32x collection complete? I mean there weren’t that many games released for it so I’m curious

No. I have about half the collection. I only kept what I considered worth playing.

The 32X had such great potential. I actually had space harrier, virtua racing deluxe, Mortal Kombat 2 and Star wars arcade. Really space harrier and virtua racing deluxe were the ones I played the most.Mortal kombat 2 on snes was better than even the 32X version and star wars arcade was fun to mess with for a bit but got old fast. I still remember every track angle on virtua racing and I still feel I can rack up the points on space harrier ! The 32X was capable of much more sadly almost every game that came out for were rush releases so we never got to see what it could really do. I remember reading in a game magazin that virtua fighter 2 was in development for the 32X and I waited only to get absolutely nothing!

The 32x was dead on arrival and rushed out quickly due to false pressure on competing with the 3do and jaguar. The 32x version of mk2 had better frame rates in sprites, clearer in some of the sound effects, presentation, and gameplay over the snes. However the snes had better balance in visual and audio than the 32x.

What game does the music come from at the beginning of the video? That's a catchy genesis tune kinda reminds me of Dynamite Headdy

Knuckles Chaotix.

@@SegaLordX Speaking of Knuckles Chaotix... I kind of loved it. Not because it was a great game in itself, but because it showed us what a 32-bit Sonic game could've been like and really wet my appetite for one. Great colors, effects like scaling and rotation, 3D bonus stages, wonderful jazzy music, huge bosses, etc.I think my biggest disappointment with the Saturn was the fact that such a Sonic game never came to be. At least we pretty much got such a game in Sonic Mania. Better late than never. :)
