I wonder if KZbin actually killed gaming. Now you can watch any game being played through from start to finish before you buy it. In the 90's and even up until about 2010, all you had was magazines and maybe a quick look at the game in the shop before you bought it. I remember playing through Valkyria Chronicles on PS3, getting stuck here and there, trying to come up with strategies (no KZbin guides to help me) I still really enjoy gaming...I spend most of my time with Super Famicom and arcade games but not much time at all with modern games.

The version later released on the PC Engine CD\TurboGrafx-CD (ironic because the PC Engine CD was released 4 years before the Mega CD!) played better on weaker hardware with 2 buttons and the story\cut scenes are better. I've always felt that it wasn't the hardware that started to kill Sega it was how Sega didn't support all the new hardware. Sega Cd was basically FMV and regurgitated Genesis games. 32X was the same. While there were a few original games for the most part it was just quick cash grabs. And they would quickly abandon the new hardware. It just got to the point where you couldn't trust them.
@retrosoul87704 жыл бұрын
Exactly because the new hardware wasn't necessary and they struggled to support platforms that shouldn't have happened to begin with. Remove the hardware and you don't have a software problem anymore.
@petewillson2053 жыл бұрын
True except Genesis 2.5 years was master system, cd, 32x was a little over a year Saturn and dreamcast 2 years, Master System got an extended life because it was big in Europe and game gear was just a mini version of it.

With the extra hardware in the Sega CD it would have been nice to see them push it to the max. With twin 16 bit processors, increased storage and scaling hardware I wonder what a game that squeezed out every ounce of power would look like.
@justanotheryoutubechannel2 жыл бұрын
@@Bellthorian Me too, but I think the fact that it was an add on really gimped it. Sonic CD made much better use of all the features than most games for the console, you got CD audio, PCM audio using the new chip, FMV, loads of new stage themes and artwork filling the CD, plus 3D sprite scaling and mode7 like effects. The Sega CD could do a lot more scaling than the SNES, but it was heavily limited in terms of framerate and resolution. The lack of bandwidth on the connector between the Sega CD and the Mega Drive limited the video framerate & resolution massively (plus lack of CPU power to decode the video), and the MD’s colour palette limited the FMVs to 16 colours. The lack of bandwidth also limited the framerate and resolution of scaling effects, Sonic CD’s Special Stages and Title Screen run at 256x224@20fps whereas the rest of the game runs at 320x224@60fps(roughly, it drops a lot into the 50s), because the bandwidth limitation held it back. You can also see that in the famous Batman & Robin game, there’s a lot more scaling going on than any SNES game, but the framerate is much lower, 30 at the most but it feels lower to me.
@Thor-Orion5 ай бұрын
The SegaCD was actually pretty cool if you got the right games. Snatcher, the Lunar games, Shining Force, SoulStar, etc. There was a lot of not great software, but there was enough good software to make it worthwhile depending on when you got it and what you paid for it.

I was one of those gamers that was really interested in the Sega CD until I saw the lackluster lineup of initial games. One thing that many people don't acknowledge is that up until around 1994 -95 many developers didn't have computers that had hard drives large enough to accommodate the storage a single CD could provide. That made it hard to develop a game that truly took advantage of the CD medium outside of FMV (which was mostly scripted) or plain old Redbook audio which was easy to add during mastering. I also wonder what kind of development tools Sega provided and if those tools could take advantage of the additional hardware from the start or if the developers had to figure that out on their own.

That's the annoying part is I'm sure publishers were saving a LOT more than $5 to produce a game on CD than on a cart, and if they had done a better job passing that savings on to consumers and advertising CDs as a cheaper media, it might have brought more people on board who were looking to save on games over time. If CDs had been priced at half the price of carts, they would've moved.

The hardware was capable of full screen video, but it shows most devs had no idea what they were doing in the early days of FMV. Maybe it was a devkit issue or something, but I don't know why most Sega CD FMV 160x112 instead of the native 320x224 when some games were the later. It wasn't like storage space was an issue, most of these games grossly underutilized the storage capacity of CD-ROM's and instead padded it with redbook audio.

I loved my Sega CD! I definitely missed out on a bunch of great titles looking back, but I enjoyed the ones I did have for hours on end. One thing that always frustrated me is that they didn't expand the color palette. You take the CD quality sound, scaling and rotation capabilities and throw in at least what the SNES was capable of displaying color wise and this would have really been the ultimate 16bit system for that era. Especially in the hands of top notch developers. I'd love to see some brave indie developer with a set of balls the size of coconuts take a crack at developing a Sega CD/32X platformer using every bell and whistle possible with that Frankenstein combination of hardware lol
@maroon92734 жыл бұрын
M68k really bump the price of the add-on. The color expansion would have been better than having a scaling and rotation graphics on the add-on. Sega cd definitely would have had colorful graphics like the 32x did and even more software titles to back it up if sega play there cards right.

The Sega CD wasn't the best game console ever, but the first one to bridge games and cinema. It had some amazing console exclusives: the one and only English-audio Snatcher port (with fantastic voice acting), Heart of the Alien (love it or hate it), Dark Wizard, Keio Flying Squadron, a half-decent Jurassic Park point-n-click, Sega CD, and Lunar: The Silver Star. The pack-in titles were awesome and held us over until we saved enough allowance to buy more games. And it had amazing ports of point-n-click adventures like Rise of the Dragon, Willy Beamish (both also with amazing voice acting), and Monkey Island. The FMV titles weren't bad either: Road Avenger, Time Gal, Revenge of the Ninja, and Cobra Command were stellar FMV titles. Power Rangers, Night Trap, and Kamen Rider Zo were less technically impressive but still fun. Despite a lot of shovelware and gruesome load times, to the Gen X / Millennial generation this system captured our imaginations and was a sign of things to come with cinematic gaming.

I agree with you on a lot of the titles that focus on regular/traditional gameplay, action titles, strategy, and adventure games such as Snatcher which I feel works well on a console. I am not so sure about titles that were clearly more intended to be played with a mouse such as Willy Beamish and Secret of Monkey Island. I should know this as I am old enough but I don't recall if there was ever a mouse peripheral for the Sega 16 bit/Sega CD. But the FMV titles, that is where my opinion really differs from yours. I feel these were some of the worst titles on the machine. (not an attack on your opinion) Perhaps interesting from a visual point of view but gameplay wise these games simply were not fun. I think Sega wasted too much money on titles such as these. It would have been better to focus on more traditional gameplay games and use the extra space for more/bigger levels and music. Cutscenes and and voices of course would still be fine. Focus also should have been mostly on games exclusive for the Sega CD and not enhanced ports from the regular 16 bit, and ports from other machines that would never work on a regular 16 bit. That might still not have saved the machine as it was also quite expensive, and face it, most parents would not buy an addition to a console that is as expensive as the machine itself. But perhaps the Sega CD would have come out better this way.
@caseyhayes45904 жыл бұрын
@@TheDutchGhost Genesis/Sega CD has a mouse but not great compatibility across library. The mouse also would have made FMV games where you shoot with a target better. Agree that Snatcher is designed so it works great with a controller and some of these others don't, the shooting gallery areas especially are fun with just a control pad. The late released strategy RPGs and JRPGs were as good as anything on SNES but that was such a niche group of gamers back then pre FFVII. A SNES CDRom with Square/Enix support would have been an insane gift to gamers.

My local radio shack had a demo unit set up where you could watch Ground Zero Texas being played. I was young and mesmerized by FMV so it excited me. I never ended up getting one and that title turned out to be not as cool as I thought in hindsight.

Between the Lunar series, SoulStar, Snatcher, etc (the higher end experiences on the system) and then the fact that a lot of Genesis games were released on CD for cheaper with better audio Sega CD definitely ended up being worthwhile for those who owned one in it’s lifetime.

Amazing video! I bought a Mega CD when it launched, but it was quite expensive. It was a great add-on, and I really wish the CD32X had more games

Even I have to say, the Sega CD is the only Sega Hardware I've never had any interest in, I really appreciate watching this little part of history of my favourite videogame company. Thanks SLX for continuing producing quality content.

When the mega cd released here in Australia, it was around $700 which came with 6 MD games on a disc. This first game i saw being demonstrated was sol fierce, which took me by surprise. Then it was sonic cd, I then knew then had to get one and did what ever it took to do so. I loved Sega in its glory days, the excitement was intense and the battle with Nintendo was epic..

Went to the 92 CES and was extremely hyped for the Sega CD promo video Sega showed. Got my Sega CD day one at the local Babbage’s (GameStop) with Night Trap. Waited a long time for games in between like Batman Returns. I enjoyed the system in the end, but wished they would have added an extra Graphics chip for more colors and had brought over Street Fighter 2 like EGM always rumored was coming. Great video, and always look forward to your content.

I owned an Amiga CD32 back in the day, and it kinda suffered from the same issue of so many games just being the regular Amiga Floppy version, but on CD with no or only little enhancements. 650 MB seemed like such a huge amount of capacity, so underutilized outside of FMV games. That's why Star Wars Rebel Assault was also such a big deal, one of the earliest CD-ROM games that really made good use of the medium and were a great game. As a side-note, one of my "What-if?" questions would be what they could've done if the Sega CD included just a bit more RAM for the main system.

The Sega CD was plagued with live action FMV games and ports that made so few enhancements that they were not worth playing over the cartridge version. Even games that were more effective at using the hardware often were not system sellers either. It had some real gems in the rough, but overall it was probably a bit too early for its time.

Mortal kombat on the sega cd really disappointment me a lot including the side scrolling stages for batman returns. Minor improvements with horrible graphics and some horrible sound efx.

I played the heck out of Sewer Shark, Willy Beamish and Time Gal. I loved, loved Eternal Champions CD and unlocked everything for it. I even went as far as recording every stage kill, Cinematic kill and character specific for it on vhs .

I remember getting this soon after launch with sewer shark and one with a red car that was a quick time event type thing, my god we were dissappointed. Me and my brother did a straight swap for an Amiga 1200 a few weeks later. I dont know what we were expecting at the time but i remeber it beimg marketed as improving everything. It came with sega classics, we put it in and they were identical to the normal versions.

I was an early adopter and I have always been a fan of "Sol Feace" except for the firing and hit sounds. With the sound abilities of the Sega Cd they could have easily done a better job with that aspect.

Man the segacd was really awessome and it was a special time during the 90s when it released. I remember staying up all night with my bestfriend playing nighttrap and many others. One of my favorites on segacd was Adventures of Willy Beamish, love that game. Hopefully it gets a remaster at some point

it was a real struggle for my mom to give me a sega genesis for christmas, so asking for a sega cd was truly out of question. I really really wanted to play Silpheed and Sonic CD, along with those RPGs (even though I couldnt speak english), but to be honest we all forgot real quick about the Sega CD. Not even my wealthy friends wanted it.

I was a late adopter of the Sega CD. I think around 2000 or 2001. While I love the system, you are 100% correct. The launch was almost a joke when I was in Middle school. There were the Sega kids bragging about how they were getting a CD attachment before it came out, and then after launch, they got quiet while all the SNES kids pointed and laughed.

@JamesChessman4 жыл бұрын
lol no way. Each game did use the Sega CD's extra capabilities, in some way, even if it was only the music and FMV's, it's all legit imo. Every game didn't need to use the same things. But I do wish Sega CD lived longer and received more games with better use of the system, in general...
@lazarushernandez58274 жыл бұрын
@@JamesChessman I would have loved it if Sega actually gave some of their arcade titles some extra Sega CD love, especially their super scalars; Outrun was already a pretty good port on the Genesis, but After Burner 2, ThunderBlade, Super Monaco GP, Outrunners and a few others had more compromised versions on the 16 bit console, the Sega CD should have been able to get them closer to the arcade originals.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu4 жыл бұрын
@@lazarushernandez5827 I think that is the unfortunate part about Sega CD, untapped potential. Especially early in it's lifespan. By the time 94 and 95 rolled around nobody cared. People were hearing about Saturn about whatever Sony was up to with this PlayStation thing. The potential was gone at that point, people had moved on and attention was lost. Oh what could have been.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu yeah that's not just the Sega CD...its Sega in general
@lazarushernandez58274 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Yeah, early on would have made a difference. The SNES rode the mode 7 wave from the get go; Super Mario World use the scaling effects for the boss encounters, F-Zero, Mario Kart and Pilotwings were bringing a fresh coat of paint to racing and flying games, I recall early efforts to bring something new with Contra 3 (the over head stages and boss battles). The Sega CD launched a year after the SNES in most markets, and a lot of people were expecting something similar considering the promotion that was done for it. I would have taken blatant F-Zero, and Pilotwings knock offs on the Sega CD early on.

It's interesting to compare this to the PC Engine CD. The TurboGrafx-16 was a flop in the US, so of course the $400 TurboGrafx CD didn't push any units. But the Japanese PC Engine CD, despite it's high price tag, did so well that in the end there were more CD based PC Engine games than Hu Card games. Part of it might have just been the Japanese market for add ons. I also think the early launch of the PC Engine and the PC Engine CD meant NEC had to push CD games in order to compete with the Super Famicom's more than 3 year hardware advantage. While the American base Genesis unit could compete with the SNES, I think the NEC just started putting a lot of their effort into CD games, meaning you had to get one to play their many awesome RPG and graphic novel games based on popular anime. My guess is that because the PC Engine CD was first on the Japanese market, that niche was already filled when Sega launched their Mega CD there. With the Mega Drive selling poorly in Japan and the Genesis doing really well against the SNES on its own, I bet there was just no need for Sega or 3rd party developers to put time and money into the Sega/Mega CD. But there was money to be made developing PC Engine CD games in Japan that did things Super Famicom cartridges just couldn't. The $300 PC Engine DUO made the price more reasonable (the Turbo DUO was less than a Genesis and Sega CD for sure), but the TurboGrafx was already dead in the US at that point.
