@cedricduyongco2 жыл бұрын
The Monster is not my type but I do like their Samurai,Turtle/Tortoise and Alpinist line. And they do make beautiful dials. I guess the motto of Seiko is there is a watch for everybody (by churning up all different designs at different price points). I used to be a Seiko snob and my collections were all Swiss brands from entry level to high end. Now I realized I am missing out a lot by ignoring Seiko. There will never be a perfect watch even at the Swiss brand higher price point. It's a matter of what you're willing to compromise. I have noticed that people are more critical of Seiko's fault but are forgiving of more expensive Swiss brands fault. Just look at the rehaut of my Rolex and see if it's off by a mm. In the logic of the people complaining with Seiko having misaligned bezel, at the price point of Rolex the rehaut should be 100% aligned. But in reality, only WIS people can notice that when inspected closely. But practically nobody will do that when it's on another person's wrist.
@96kyh2 жыл бұрын
@@cedricduyongco I agree with your points. For that matter, WIS people are complaining about imperfections on AliExpress watches (homages) that cost from USD 60 - 250; which are otherwise incredible value for the money. Of course these are usually homages, but with outstanding specifications and finishing, considering the low prices..

I really don't understand the negativity and the hate for Seiko...I just bought this watch from an AD for 20% discount from retail price, IMO it's great: case finish is top notch at this price point, accuracy is about 6 seconds per day. On my own alignment is good, I thought the cyclop iwas off but after staring very carefully I noticed it was an optical illusion. Bezel action is also very good and just after checking the alignment for a while I noticed the paint used for the engraved numbers of the bezel is indeed dark blue matching the dial. Yes there is some play in the endlinks, but underneath them my case was polished well. My main complaint is the clasp that IMO is too wide for the watch, I understand previous generations had a slimmer one but complainers complained it looked weird. I also noticed that the notches of the case aligned with the ones on the bezel but the latter should have been a tad wider in order to match their counterpats but here I'm nitipicking. Overall I would recommend this diver to people that are more interested in substance (ISO 6425 tested) than form (0.5mm play in the endlinks). Oh, hardlex is IMO better than the cheap and hazy sapphire you find on the knockoff brands at the same price point, even if it made more sense with the original design without lens because the bezel protected the recessed crystal...I am thinking about removing it to be honest. P.S. It's sad to see this channel recommends to go with AliE because they have a blue tinted sapphire, in the 70s an advertisement stated "just fake people buy fake watches".
@LumePip9 ай бұрын
I totally respect your position and am glad you've had a great experience with your Seikos. But I have to say, the sapphire crystals on watches I've experienced and reviewed at £480 (the current RRP of this watch) are not hazy or cheap looking. Likewise, most people paying £480 for a diver likely aren't using it for diving, and if they were, the poor diver's extension would be a disappointment for them. I think a lot of people - and admittedly this is based purely off anecdotal feedback and my own inclinations - would go for a combination of specs AND design/brand heritage at this sort of price point. There are better offerings from Seiko at this price, or just above this price. And let me add I absolutely don't condone fake watches. You imply I do - that's wrong. The Heimdallr homage that many argue is better than the real Monster (but I can't say as I haven't handled it) is not a fake.

I’m a seiko collector and I’ve got quite a few divers, including a jade green monster which is pretty similar to this one. It’s probably the watch in my collection that I’ve got the most mixed feelings on, sometimes I love wearing it but it gets less time than any other seiko diver. I have to say I agree this bracelet is a bit of a waste of space, it just doesn’t match the case and dial. The diver extensions generally are just a load of nonsense for 99% of users, they just look like a cheap afterthought to tick a box. I’ve got mine on a strapcode superengineer, much more in line with the industrial case design I think. On a positive note it seems to have nearly doubled in value since I bought it….

I had a Strapcode Hexad bracelet on a Samurai I used to have and it really did lift the watch into a new tier entirely, so that is always an option. Lumey! I've been really falling in love with your videos lately. Also, I kinda had built you up to kinda look like if Johnny Rotten was a Top Gear presenter in 2005, but you instead look quite dashing and really respectable. I don't know if I might be a bit disappointed... Now, about the watch, I think it is obvious that Seiko has become immune to make a 10/10 watch these days, especially divers, but also other styles. I mean, they make great watches and mostly worth their buck, but I think they're currently in a bit of a rut when it comes to certain things other brands seem to master with little to no problems. A few weeks ago I was looking at a Presage model, I liked it a lot, but there were some minute details that made me shy away a bit. For me it was the hands, that watch model would have been a solid 9/10 if they had gone for some coffin shaped hands like they do on the GS. All in all, I kinda felt there were better options out there that was more appealing for the money. Then I had a look at a Orient Bambino and I just fell head over heels for that little rascal. I was really close to pulling the trigger on it, but I already have a Seestern 600T homage on the way (thanks to you), and now I am about to order another watch which will kinda serve the purpose of any Presage or Bambino. It's the Selten 00.00 with a meteorite dial. That's a watch I think you should try and get for your channel, not many reviews on KZbin for it, and the guy who makes them is a really nice and helpful guy, and the watch looks quite nice, although I will admit it is not a 10/10, but I felt it was unique enough to get my hands on. Good health to you, sir. Cheers.
@LumePip2 жыл бұрын
That's probably the most unlikely comparison I've ever had but I'll take it! Also, dashing and respectable aren't adjectives I've ever associated with myself so thanks so much for saying so 🤣 There's a fair few pieces mentioned there. Some of the Presage models look great (the Cocktail Time ones, to be specific), but I think the lack of a sapphire crystal on the models I like has put me off. It's a little thing but I'm a right clumsy bast**d, so that Hardlex would look like a used vinyl in no time. As for the Bambino, it's another I'd like to try. Maybe I should and just upgrade the crystals on both. It's just an expense I resent having to do having already paid for the watch. I think you'll be made up with the Seestern, but do let me know your thoughts. I'm buying another one of them. They're just fantastic value for money IMO. Not sure even San Martin gets close to them, really - at least at that price. The San Martins at £200-£350 ovbiously do, but for about £140, Seestern is the GOAT. I know the Selten watch you're talking about! It's a beautiful piece and one I'd love to review. They actually offered me a small discount on the piece but I couldn't get one at the time. Maybe one will come into my possession in future if I keep my ear* to the ground**. *eye **eBay I hope you continue enjoying the videos, mate!

A bit of a harsh review...even though I tend to agree (generally) with your points. Full discloser: I have three Seiko Monsters (including the model featured in this review) and I have two Heimdallr "monsters" as well (an orange dial and a really cool green dial). While it's true, spec-wise, these homage watches (fake-o's) are superior to the real deals (again, by specs) and the prices are WAY cheapter, I must confess that the sum of the parts doesn't necessarily trump the whole, if that makes sense. In other words, I'd rather have the real thing, short comings or not. The finishing on the real Seikos I've found to be superior and then there's the grating, nagging little voice that bugs my horological OCD: you're wearing a fake!
@LumePip2 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point, mate - no doubt, there's a magic to certain brands and pieces, and that goes for this too. I think sometimes when you're trying to review stuff, it can be difficult not to let it boil down to hard facts, but then something will happen when those facts come into play. In this case, the Hardlex got scratched and I wasn't even sure how, and I think that's something that would really annoy me (and it did!). Seiko perhaps are riding the wave of goodwill because their watches have that certain magic that their history and designs hve afforded them, but that'll only go so far. If they could have better QC (alignment issues, etc) and ramp up specs the way they've ramped up prices, it'd be better for us all :)

Wow I do like the styling of the Monster, but I have to agree with you that in this price range you have a sapphire crystal. Dust inside the case of a 500-dollar watch is unacceptable. And I don't like the idea of all the crap collecting around the bezel. I think they made a decision at the top to pocket the money they save by giving their customer less quality hence no sapphire in many of their mid-price so-called better-quality watches. That said most of my Seiko's are still looking great even with Hardlex Crystal, Mineral instead of sapphire. There are always pro's and con's, I like Seiko and I do wish they would start using Sapphire in more of their mid-range choices. Orient Triton has sapphire Crystal and they do it at a price point below 300 dollars and great accuracy, the but on the Triton though is I am sure it is no ISO certified for diving and that does cost! And hey I am no professional, but I do like my watches and I have them ranging from an Omega Planet Ocean to an Invicta Pro diver, everyone needs a beater watch. LOL!

I totally agree that hardlex at this price range is an outrageous decision. Seiko sure makes some weird decisions these days. It makes all these limited editions at ridiculous prices solely for boosting sales. Yes, FOMO is a thing. I salute you for giving your unpopular opinion but you made some excellent points
@burhanbaik2806 Жыл бұрын
to be fair, on the dust thing, just because your cheaper watches dont have qc issues, doesnt mean the rest of their production dont have one. i like the bracelet. got 70s feel to it. but the extension is horrible. even worse that you cant remove them.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
I get that, but I can only review the watches in front of me and each, at least for the sake of review, is representative of the batch. There will definitely be some of those cheaper watches with QC issues, too, like you say, and no doubt watches more expensive than this will have some, too! I think a lot of people have jumped on this video thinking I'm a hater of Seiko, but I've got plenty of positive Seiko reviews, too 😅 And I have another watch at the moment with that horrible extension and I can't even

Seems you can either have a something that shatters or something that scratches. Polywatch does not seem to work that well with hardlex though. If you are going to quote me in your videos I want a slice of the action. How about you send me the watch? ;)

I think the pedantic, precious side of me needs that scratch-free crystal! And I am getting myself another Seiko soon... All will be revealed in due course. 😅 And I'll try and limit any and all quoting so as not to incur royalty fees haha.

This watch is in Prospex price country so indeed it doesn't make sense or value ! Better to buy that or buy a SKX779 which officially limited to orange or black at around £300 is better value for money. Cheaper still if you get with the rubber dive strap

The review is spot on, I've often been tempted by a Samura but the ongoing qc issues and the price deter me. I have Citizens that have been half the price better qc and blow the Seikos literally out of the water. I'd like to buy a Seiko but I will not pay through the nose for sub standard procedure.
@ahha6304 Жыл бұрын
You can never go wrong with Citizen, and I have a vid that I have a speed problem on this Seiko in my account. (edit: already change the calibre, as it is till in the warranty time) The only reason I bought this one is that it makes fine dress watch, but if I have to get through hard stuff, my Promaster Eco-Drive Chronograph is always the choice.

I agree about the hardlex . For a watch of the same price, other brands (like Tissot or Hamilton for example) offer sapphire.

but you will get only quartz versions with those brands. so, for me, movement is more important than the glass

@Daniel-bv2wc6 ай бұрын
Whilst some of your gripes are legitimate. If you are buying a new watch and there is dust or dirt on the dial or other QC issues,, just send it back get it replaced or full refund. As for Seiko's pricing model who ever pays full price? It's clear they over price and then half the price come sale time. That is the true value. Never pay RRP on a Seiko! Finally the monster looks best on the rubber dive strap IMO, I would not be bothering with the shanky bracelet on an entry level diver.

Overrated?? Bought a 1st Gen Monster in Black SKX779 the month it hit the US Market. Have worn it for 20+ years daily....never opened it, had it serviced, never adjusted.....still keeps great time. Have dropped it dozens of times, banged it hard more times than I could remember, have snorkeled hundreds of times, swim regularly with it.....works like the day I bought it. Overrated.....I think not, worth every penny!!!

@LumePip Жыл бұрын
I didn't know I wouldn't want it. The dial looks incredible, and there's no doubt with better build quality, it'd be a much more appealing proposition. I also have to sometimes review watches negatively, if I don't have a good experience with them, for example. If you like Seiko and their offerings, then more power to you. If we all liked the same thing etc etc etc

Seiko makes their watches the same way as the Chinese make watches. The difference is, a Chinese worker working for a Japanese company is less eager to make a precise product, because he hates the Japanese owners. Chinese workers work harder for Chinese firms, more accurate and are more proud of the end product. That´s my take on it. Stop buying crappy Seiko´s and demand better QC from Seiko. If you keep on buying badly aligned dials, Hardlex instead of Sapphire, pressed clasps instead of milled, than Seiko won´t stop producing these substandard watches. Go San Martin or Cronos all day, or even Pagani Design or Heimdahler. These Chinese brands are superior to Seiko and half the price or even 25% of the price of a Seiko.

Wow, that's a really interesting take, Rene. I genuinely hadn't thought of that before. Totally agree on demanding better QC from Seiko, and the Cronos/San Martin watches I've handled have all been far superior to the Seikos I've paid a lot more for, but I wouldn't go as far down as Pagani 😅 But it's a good point nonetheless!

It's a tool watch that looks best with some battle scars...like a Lexus GX460...ya it's an upscale SUV, but it's meant to be seriously off-roaded. It's a Seiko, it's meant to be abused and keep on ticking for years and years, it's not an investment and I never expect to see my money back. Besides, I can't see the lint on the dial...I'm old.

You have so right with your words. Seiko have forgotten to sience in new features. on the wristband and on the movement. for this price i will not get the same movement as i pay a seiko sport.
