The Seiko SARB035/033 - Still available or worth the money in 2019?

A review of both the Sekio SARB035 and SARB033, and how they are different.
The strap for the SARB035 is from StrapsCo (www.amazon.ca/..., and the strap for the SARB033 is from Strap Mill Canada (www.strapmillc...)

I ended up buying both of these as well. Some thoughts: - It will do your head in trying to decide which is more dressy/casual. It’s so subjective, opinions are so varied. They are both equally versatile. - It took a few weeks for the movement to “run in” and settle down. They will lose/gain time depending on the position you place them overnight. Find the position which compensates for any gain/loss during the day. For example I lay my 033 crown up overnight and it only loses 1-2 sec/day. Also if they sit unused for a few days they seem to take a day or two to settle in to a steady rhythm again. - Being so polished and shiny I do worry how they’ll look after a few years wear and tear. But I love them.

The Sarb033 is currently $388 on Amazon and it just dropped to $350 a few days ago and I picked one up.

Dont think i will ever sell my 033. Ive brought this watch with me everytime i travel in the past 3 years, swimming, hiking, it been through it all lol. It kinda a nice tool to tell time but also help as a pick me up as everytime i look at it, it remind me of all my trips and happy time :)

These two along with the Seiko SKX 007 as beater watch have provided me with a solid basic collection and a lot of versatility and fun with bracelets and strap options. I will add The Aquaterra 38mm and a luxury dress watch (Longines or Tudor) as Swiss upgrades to the 035 and 033.

Hi there. I love the sarb. I also got both of them from a Japanese online store. At first I had purchased the Sary057 thinking that I would wear it more than the sarb but I have always wanted the sarb033. Simple but very elegant in my opinion. I also got the sarb017 a few weeks later and found that to be a stunning little watch as well. Ended up keeping 38-41mm watched in my small collection. But the sarbs are keepers.

I had the same thing, first i got the 033 then the 035. They are really nice! I also got the Sarb 017 but that watch is a hole other thing, you have to be in the mood for the 017. My experience is that they get more accurate as you have them 1 month or longer the wrist. Good review!

As far as "anti-shock" spring/mounts go it's not exactly for saving it from dropping, although that would be a nice thing too and I'm sure it does go a long way there, but it's really there for simple bumps and harsh motion by the wearer, and that's just for starters technically.

I have the Tag Carrera Cal 5, very similar to the 033, that strap is awesome and I am gonna grab it. I wish the Sarbs were more accurate from all the reviews on message boards I have seen. Best thing is those Lume markers at the hour marks.

When it's dark, I can't tell the difference between the hour and minute hand, the lume strips are very similar length

Nothing wrong with having the same watch in different color ways. The price is about what a Black Sumo goes for. Sumo has the same movement but Hardlex instead of sapphire.

It was “an amazing value” at under $350, but not at $500. You might as well spend more for the SARX line - superior bracelets with diashield, anti-reflection crystal, etc.

The SARX line is not worth $700 more than the SARB line, especially because they have the same exact movement. the bracelet is slightly bette on the sarx, but the sarb series has a really nice touch with the phosphorescent lighting that the sarx lacks. If the braclet and anti-reflection crystal is worth another $700 to you then so be it.

035 is more legible imo. I have it, and I never struggle to tell the time.

That's an interesting point, perhaps that is the case. The SARB033 was losing more time than the SARB035, and I wonder if it's the difference in movement (C or D 6R15). Thanks for the insight!

@@EverydayWatchGuy Yes, supposedly the 6R15C is prone to low amplitude so the D revision was introduced in 2017. Your 033 has a 2016 serial number and your 035 is a 2018, hence the different versions.

I have the 035. Obviously ca be but I don't consider either a dress watch - too thick for me. I use it more as a sport/field watch on nato straps or bracelet

I think you could pull off the Sarb, even with a slightly larger wrist size. If not, check out the Sary line from Seiko, which is similar but a 41mm case. Cheers

Maybe try regulating it again? My three 7s26 movements averages +0.5, +1.8 and +3.5 s/d respectively (and while it varies a bit from movement to movement, none of them are too bad when it comes to rate variation between individual days either). I wouldn't at all be contempt with a 6R15 running +10s/day.

Thanks for your input. I agree that, in the past, my other Seiko movements (7s26 and 4R36) were more accurate. Sometimes there is added variation after they put the movement in the case, but for a 6R15 I may want to regulate again in the future.

The 035 is much more legible. All I see on the black version is white lines on the hour and minute hands.

@@odizlee they have released similar designs to the Sarb, like the Seiko sharp or SARY models, but I don't think they capture the same dimensions and execution of the original Sarb watches.

Surprisingly, I didn't have to pay any duties. Some JDM sellers may work with you regarding what to report on the invoice and this may allow you to avoid extra import duties into Canada.

Yeah, I think you will find that most sellers curriers (free shopping) don't keep tracking information once it leaves their country (Japan). My rule of thumb is to wait 3 weeks once you know the package has left before following up with the seller.

It seems there are a spectrum of good/bad reviews for this movement. I can tell you that I have owned multiple watches with the 6R15 and they were all reliable with a deviation of no more than 10 seconds per day. Cheers

How difficult should it be to remove the stock metal bracelet from the 035? I ended up taking mine to my watchmaker. He got it off but he had some trouble. The fit of the end links and spring bars was extremely tight. Was my new watch unique?

Having tightly fitted spring-bars or bracelet pins (for sizing bracelet) can occur. I have noted this for some JDM watches (shipped from Japan). My Sarb 035 had extremely tight pin/collars that I could not size the bracelet at all. Luck of the draw I suppose
