If this video looks familiar, it probably should do; I did the same with the SARB017 a few weeks ago. I have kinda enjoyed coming to these JDM models after the hype has died down, but the prices are still up. Allows me to do something a little different with them than just a straight review. So, should you buy one of these for 50% more than they were 6 months ago? Watch the video of course! Cheers, JOMW.

These watches are 38 mm. Compare that to the newer Presage that is 41 mm or other Seiko automatics that are 42 mm. For some men with smaller wrists, it is worth paying the current price for the SARB 033 at 38 mm instead of a huge diameter that makes it look like you are wearing a tire on your wrist.

This watch (033 anyway) was my High School graduation present, and it is an awesome watch. I hardly ever wear the thing however as I have worked with my hands in one form or another my entire life, and I did not feel comfortable having a $300 seemingly delicate watch in a construction environment, and I was tired at looking at the scratches of my Seiko 5 (Hardlex really doesn't have any more scratch resistance than a Timex mineral crystal in my experience). I have since bought a quartz Seiko SGG729, a 38mm (wears even smaller than the 033) titanium watch with a sapphire crystal, 100mm water resistance, and a navy blue sunburst dial. It has everything I will ever need in a watch, dressy enough to go with a suit, tough enough to wear to work, small enough to get my hands in hard to reach places, and affordable enough so that I don't mind using it for all of these things. If I was only allowed to have one watch it would be the SGG729, I would want more but I could easily settle. I know this was a long and difficult to read comment so I thank you for reading the ravings of madman who loves watches.

Mate, I've had a similar experience with the 6R15s. I know it's a respected movement. Mine ran at +5 out od the box but within a few weeks went down to -5. Comparatively, I have 3 other watches with 4R35 movements that operate at +1,+2 and +5 secs per day. I prefer watches to run fast and not slow, and I'm satisfied with anything running within +10.

Extreme versatility, gorgeous case proportions, and an open caseback to admire everytime I put it on in the morning. It is an absolutely wonderful daily companion, I really cannot see myself ever selling it. Cheers from Brisbane!

I picked up my SARB035 about a week before the discontinued leak came out. This is one of my favorite watches. The finishing is better than most watches under $1000. I had to get a clasp extension to get it to fit on my large wrists, and it added 4 micro adjustments, thankfully it was cheaper than an extra link. I think these are the best affordable alternatives to the Aqua Terra or the Explorer I.

I am currently wearing a Seiko SNXS73 which has a silver sunburst dial, they do a blue dial and a dark gray/black . I see this as a great alternative for the current price of a sarb you could get every SNXS dial colour option. A few great quality straps would fit within the funds needed although the 19mm lugs can limit this, you can push some 20mm straps on but makes removal harder. The stock bracelet has a retro charm about it but it’s an acquired taste, most would want to throw it back in the box and never look at it again

I got a used one for $350AUD. Didn't run to specs, so a retired watchmaker dismantled the movement and overhauled it for $100. Said it was very dry inside, not well oiled which isn't uncommon with mass produced spring movements. Now it runs almost as well as my quartz.

I picked up my SARB033 pre owned, but like new, with the bracelet still in the plastic and a ColaReb strap for... $500CDN. I am aware that there are higher end pieces that are only a little bit more than what I paid, but everything seems to be 40-41mm!! 38 is my absolute max unless it’s a diver and I sold my SKX for that reason. The SARB033 fits me PERFECTLY. And while I may one day realize that I could have had better for my money... well... so be it. But for now I couldn’t be happier and I am wearing this piece every day with a smile!

Picked up one on eBay in the U.K. for around £200 after watching J. Anthony's rave review. A week later his broke and found some Chinese components in it, just as my new purchase arrived. At first I was disappointed as I thought it was too small and I'm more used to 40-42 same size wrist as yourself. Having said that I love it and even took it on holiday as an evening watch. Caught a guy wearing a Navitimer oggling it, he might have thought it was a GS too. I would swap it for a SARX, especially the one with blue hands and a bit bigger at 40mm from memory. Keep thinking about flipping it but something holds me back (the inflated price perhaps?). I was going to put it on a Colareb tan suede but after the fashion show I think I prefer the bracelet. Still hovering over the Cadisen diamond and might put the suede on that. Great review.

Discontinuing of SARB033/035 looks as marketing strategy to separate in price 4R and 6R movements, making 6R series more luxurious choice above 500 $. Therefore hard to expect new replacement to appear from Seiko in the same price range with the same level of finishing. I agree what Orient Star may give an alternative for below 500 $ level (also can be within Seiko strategy).

MSRP for the 033 and 035 was ¥45,000 (in the ballpark of $425 US at current rates). I managed to pick up a nearly unused model for a fair bit less because the previous owner lost a friction pin in the bracelet and apparently never bothered to take it to a jeweler. ¥1,000 later and it was good as new.

Hey! I agree with you about the inflated prices. This being said, as a proud owner of a 6 inch wrists, there is nothing quite like it, as newer JDM models are bigger... I couldn’t agree more! I looked and looked and couldn’t find a model anything like the SARB033 or really any that were 38mm. I paid $500CDN for my SARB033 with the bracelet still in plastic and with a ColaReb strap. Yes I overpaid (but to be fair the prices in Canada haven’t ever been in the $300 range new when you include taxes shipping and import duties) but in my opinion the watch doesn’t under deliver. It has all of the same features (aside from AR which I am happy to live without the micro-scratches that come with an outer coating) as similar priced entry level Swiss pieces, and while I’ll admit the ETA 2824 is a somewhat nicer/more interesting looking mov’t, my SARB’s 6R15 outperforms the 2824 (-2s/d vs -6s/d) inside the Mido Baroncelli a friend of mine gave to me. So I can at least say that in my experience, the 6R15 at least performs comparably to an ETA 2824. So with that said, what else does a ~$500 entry level Swiss piece have that the SARB033 doesn’t? I’ll tell you one thing though: Here in Canada, some of the prices on eBay.ca have climbed as high as $1,200 and beyond. Would I pay that much for a SARB033? No. Would I sell mine, and turn a $700 profit if you offered me $1200 tomorrow? Not a chance. I can make more money. This watch is discontinued. None more will be made. But I own one, and that is pretty cool 😎

I was fortunate enough to buy both when they were around $300, but not sure I would buy one at almost $500. I do have small wrists, so these watches fit me perfectly. They are solidly built and in time will probably continue to increase in price. So, even if you buy one now, you'll likely be able to get your money out of it if you want to sell it later. As you noticed, it is a strap monster. The black strap and cream dial are an elegant combination.

I'll have to admit that I used to own the SARB033 and SARB035 but ended up selling the SARB035 because the dial got a bit boring eventually for me and the dial on the SARB033 didn't impress me. I also used to own the SARB017 but sold it because I acquired the rare SARB013. I even ended up selling the SARB013 to put my money elsewhere. Recently I was able to snag a SARB070 on the second hand market with the gold colored bezel polished back to stainless steel and am excited for it to come in. The SARB070 has gold indices as opposed to the silver indices on the SARB035. These watches are great but sometimes get washed out by other watches that are more "fun." This SARB035 and the SARB033 are definitely more conservative pieces. I think I'll fall in love with the SARB line again.

I absolutely love my SARBs. I have the 033 (black dial), 065 (Cocktail Time) and the 017 (Alpinist), and while they all share the same rock solid 6r15 movement, each have their own unique character. If the style calls to you, my advice is don't let the past cloud the present... they will never be $300 again, and you don't want to look back on today and regret not picking it up back 'when it was only $460'. Another great review!

thought that sarb033 was kinda vanilla, anyway bought a sarb033 used out of curiosity at US$125 right after the news about its discontinuity broke out - a smart move i reckon. It is magical. longer you have it, more you will love it. it looks beautiful on black leather strap (i share the same feeling as yours about its factory bracelet o..0”) and it helped me refrain from buying an Explorer 1 (“369” we called it) because it holds this space of my collection tightly and nicely. on the other hand, it seduced me to reach out for its bro sarb035, whose current ask is obviously too much... so i’m eyeing for good deal on used ones to come up... may meet you in the bids ^_^’

Got my 033 over 2 years ago for about C$400, and my 035 more recently at the current price of C$600 all in of course. Are they worth it? Hell yes. Should I have got them at the same time instead? Hell yes to that too but that doesn’t change my decision. When I recently got my 035 even my wife was like “What? Another watch? Damn that’s a CLEAN dial! I like it!”

Just the way I like a dial. Not too much writing on the dial. Just a nice clean design. Especially if I compare it a much more expensive watch like a Rolex Submariner, that has an overkill of text on the dial.

The 33 arrived today. Overall, the hype about this being a simple, classic, well-crafted, beautiful watch is true and the 38mm is a great size, even on my 7in wrist. In video and photos, the stock bracelet also looks well-crafted, of solid metal, and arguably decent design, but after actually holding it, the metal is very light and almost feels cheap- I can understand why so many just want the watch and are quick to swap out the bracelet. And it’s clear why the reviewer called it an “after-thought.” Just my opinion. I paid $457US, with Prime, new from Amazon - the range is now 450-950. If the price drops in the next few weeks I’ll try to get one for cheaper and return this one. Or maybe I’ll be happy I got it for under 500 and just keep it.

Same thoughts I have when it comes to this watch now. At the lower price I would have pulled the trigger on the watch but I came in late to watches (this fall) and I decided it's better to just get an SKX0013K2 on sale. PS. I like the Presage line a lot but maybe next time they go on sale.

How did that work out? I am deciding between the SKX013 ($249) and the SARB033 ($499). I am leaning Sarb and want to be convinced to get the 013!

Missed 035 for original price, but having it in the “plan” , despite the bracelet connection to the case it is a beauty! I looked at sarx043. It tries to be more “trendy” (for good or bad - depends on personal preferences) but bracelet das not communicate with the lugs either! 🙄. Sydney opera syndrome continues to the higher price level as well...

I still love the 033 and 035, but buying from Canada I've got to pay import taxes on top of the inflated prices. So it's just not for me. Which is a shame because at 38mm this is in the sweet spot.

I'm never gonna sell mine. Despite of the bracelet, it's so much value for the money. I've recently serviced it for 150 bucks. There's nothing not to love about it.

Loving the sarb 035 and got mine for 300€ new with stickers still on it. A great watch and rocking it. There are alternatives but I for example ain’t like the sarx hands so it is not an option, I think the sarb is sort of unique. Great review as usual, was fun to watch 👍🏻🙏🏻

Got mine today, on Dec 14 2020. Amazon had the SARB035 listed at $414 and change. I spent basically all year trying to find a watch that would scratch the "SARB itch" with other watches...

These watches were seriously good value when you could buy them in the Japanese shops. I brought one last year from Bic Camera in Hiroshima for $240US. Amazing value at that price

@@manzahalem8845 actually at the time I saw it around that price in quite a few places in Japan. You are always going to get better pieces when you are actually in the stores in Japan than the on line sites. And unfortunately I have found that most of these local Japanese shops aren't normally that keen to deliver overseas so it is hard to access these great prices unless you are there
@nathanbastin867
@nathanbastin867 5 жыл бұрын
do be aware that the Japanese retail on them was 45,000 yen when they were still available. I got mine for 30,000 over here at a shop that was trying to get rid of their old stock, but still the $500 for one isn't that expensive for what you get!

Hey mate! Sorry but this time I can’t agree with you! IMO the former MSRP was a real steal. The Sarx is a real nice watch but way bigger and much more expensive! Now the most of the Presage line watches came with a downgraded movement at a higher price 😩 I have the 33 & the 35 and I have no issues at all, both are running with +3 to +6 sec. 😍 Because of the bracelet: is this the original Sarb033 one or may be from the 35? Although the watches are the same, the end links/bracelet are slightly different! I wanted to keep one bracelet new - but unfortunately .... 😩😩😩

Thanks for another great video Jody! Its actually right on time for me as I am also late to the Seiko party. You've already helped me add two great watches to my little collection: The Helm Vanuatu, which I love and the Richard Legrand Odyssea MK II, which has now become my favorite everyday piece. I was hoping to get your opinion on something but this video may have slightly answered my question. I'm a little torn between 2 choices for my next watch. I was considering picking up the Seiko SARB033 because of its reputation and nickname (Baby Grand Seiko) and all the hoopla with the discontinuation but of course I was hoping to do that before the prices go too sky high. But Timex just released the 1st Timex automatic that really caught my eye: The S1 Giorgio Galli. With prices steadily rising on the Sarb033 I'm leaning more towards the more modern S1. Any thoughts? Or any opinion of the Timex S1 in general? Also I know JOMW "watchers" are some of the most informed and enthusiastic watch people out there so I also welcome any opinions from the collective. Thanks again.

Just like the Alpinist, if you cross your fingers and toes and look at just the right time, Amazon (USA) will offer these new with Seiko warranty for $318.75, sold by Amazon.com (Alpinist sells for $356.75). More likely to see these in the mornings, every couple weeks or so. They seem to sell maybe 20-50 of these at a time and then go back to the 3rd party sellers with their more market driven prices. I got my SARB033 this way and it's my favorite watch. At that price, these are amazing value. I still can't believe these used to be sold that cheaply on the regular. That said, I probably wouldn't buy one for more than $400 today.
