On today’s show, your hosts Barbara and Dr. Polucki welcome Nurse Practitioner Sondra Wollenman in studio. Sondra works in the Palliative Care department at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. The group discuss the importance of palliative care, which focuses on whole-person care for those suffering from chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The goal is to provide treatment plans and work with the patient and their family as well as a go-between to their specialty doctor. Hospice care can be often confused with palliative care however, hospice is more of end of life care and symptom management. Sondra talks about the importance of arranging an Advanced Care Directive should a patient become unable to make their own medical decisions, taking the pressure off the family members.
