Zeta has a special place in my heart. I got back into Gundam when my mom was battling and then passed away from Stage 4 cancer. It gave me an escape and easy to identify with the characters especially Kamile. Loved Emma Sheen too as the perfect sidekick for the AEUG. This was an amazing review and after Zeta I watched ZZ and CCA and will re watch the UC series again. I have the New Translation but I disliked how they left out a lot especially Char's speech which is key in UC history. However, Zeta is my all time fave which helped me fall in love again with Gundam after being teased and bullied for liking Wing as an adolescent. I also now build gunpla since August and I am building an MG Ver KA Zeta. I also loved After War X which is often forgotten in the gundam universe. great work you have a new subscriber in me.

@@Viseak Thanks for the heads up - Unfortunately I’ve already been spoiled on the main events of the plot, so no worries there. Oh, as long as I’m thinking about it, I’ve actually been wanting to get some advice from folks who make anime-related content. I’ve been on a major anime kick lately and I have several series/OVAs/movies/etc that I want to make videos about, but I know that a lot of the companies that hold the rights to various anime properties are quite…mm, draconian when it comes to people using clips for their content on YT. I don’t mind my videos getting claimed, it’s not like I’m making any money from ads anyway, I only just hit 100 subs, but I don’t want to get a strike or anything like that. Do you happen to have any advice for how to deal with that type of stuff/avoid getting videos blocked/taken down, etc?
@Viseak Жыл бұрын
@@novemberbravo6194 damn that’s a shame, still a worthy watch none the less so I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride. Congrats on 100 subs! About your question it can get a bit tricky, particularly with any anime owned by Toei. If it’s a Toei production I’d say be extra cautious, use less clips and keep clips to under 15 seconds ish as a rule of thumb, mainly used for context only. For everything else, you can be a bit more generous but still don’t go overboard with clips. When you do use clips, there are a bunch of ways to avoid copyright bots that could just strike your channel outright. Personally I layer the footage in a clipbox over the recording of myself which helps a lot, as a lot of copyright bots tend to scan pixels in the 4 corners of a video (or so I’ve heard). You could also adjust the speed of clips, mirror them, or add filters to them, a common one is the aged TV filter slapped on top. You can even get a bit creative and layer your clips so it looks like they’re playing on a vintage TV which can look pretty neat. But yeah, basically the main thing is not to overuse them, and try to avoid just having clips playing on the screen. A perfect example of what NOT to do is my horrible and old Zoids timeline video that has more copyright claims on it than I can count 😅

@@Viseak Oh, I’ve absolutely enjoyed watching it! My first UC show (if you don’t count Thunderbolt since that’s kinda a stand-alone property anyway) was Unicorn, so I had a rough idea of where the MSG/Z/ZZ/CCA story was going anyway. And the jump in animation quality over 0079 is astounding - I’m a massive sakuga geek, so I’ve been getting a ton of enjoyment out of that aspect of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to write out all the tips/ideas, I really appreciate it! I’ll keep the thing about Toei in mind, and make sure to do a little background on who the rights holders are for the shows I’m planning on writing about are before I start production. And those are all some great, really creative ideas for how to disguise footage so it doesn’t trip the scanners. Seriously, thank you, it means a lot that you’re willing to offer such comprehensive advice! Oh, and thanks for the ‘grats on the 100 subs; I’m still trying to wrap my head around the notion that there might be somewhere close to 100 people who are interested enough in my content to want to lend me their time and attention like that (I’m sure at least a few of them are bots/throwaways that aren’t genuine subs). It’s both really humbling and a little scary lol, but honestly, ever since I started making videos, it’s the happiest I’ve been in a long time. I haven’t felt this creatively a personally fulfilled since I was in a band back when I was in college (that enterprise unfortunately crashed and burned pretty thoroughly, but that’s another story). I told myself when I started out that I was going to do it exclusively for myself, and not worry at all about numbers; I’ve had several creative ventures fail because I got too wrapped up in the notion of success as opposed to doing them because it made me happy. I even made a video essay about that very topic, haha. Anyway, I’ll stop rambling, I really should get to bed, it’s almost 6AM here and I’ve been filming/editing for the last several hours. Thank you again, cheers!

You missed it when it came out probably because you were not even born. Also the western distribution of the Gundam franchise, especially UC content has been handled so poorly until recently. Only some streaming services pick up classic Gundam content. If I recall, not even Netflix, the new "home of Gundam" even has Zeta on it. My bet is because Netflix only wants the new flashy Gundam content to keep.

In ZZ I realized that the tone of the series followed the tone of the characters. Without the spacenoid teenagers it was deadly serious as Zeta had been. In the scenes with them, it was a comedy as they didn't take it seriously and hadn't really faced the horrors of war. I think Zeta did the same thing, as the amount of context for episodes we get increases as Kamille pays more attention and cares more about the greater picture.
@user-pi1lb4tf2f3 ай бұрын
I'm just glad everyone has the same understanding of Jerid's arc. Sure it was obvious how he's the cocky pilot meant to be kicked around by the MC but he started the trope that either ends for a better ending like Patrick Colasour or absolute worst like Iok Kujan. Jerid was promoted without a fair reasoning other than having survived his encounters against the Zeta Gundam and being a guy. Meanwhile his supposed Rival cared less and less about him since he moved on and matured. His death from an impulse shot by Kamille then drifting his MS to an exploding ship was fitting because he didn't deserve Kamille's full attention.

Outstanding analysis. Re: the discussion of Reccoa's reveal of sexual assault, I actually rewatched the scene via the dub after watching it subbed first, and I noticed in the dub script she instead says that men only know how to "take advantage of" women. To "take advantage of" someone obviously has various meanings which would be applicable to Scirocco's treatment of her, but in the context of men taking advantage of women, it's obviously commonly used as a euphemism for sexual assault, and that was where my mind immediately went when she said that. So ironically, this was an instance where the dub script got the meaning across better for English-speaking audiences than the more literal sub script, while still maintaining the original nuance. This is why localization is a good thing!

Great video, Zeta is such a dense show so I'm glad you really tore into it! I'm just sad about that ten-episode stretch as well, the battles in those episodes feel very obligatory. The only other thing that really stank to me was Rosamia, who I didn't like at all on my first watch. "Ahh, another cyber newtype who grows close to Kamille and probably dies?!?!" I thought. She goes deeper than that, but I still have a shred of that initial revulsion, lol. To go on a tangent, 79 to Zeta is a miracle of worldbuilding and concepts being a mix of stuff from real life and high creativity. When I watched 79, the Zeon obsession with ridiculously specialized weapons reminded me of the concept of "Wunderwaffe" from WW2, where the Germans invested massive sums of money into prototypes that never really helped that much. Add how Zeon's uniforms and general aesthetics resemble the Nazis, and it's an interesting bit of verisimilitude on the part of the creators. Zeta stepped it up a notch with the Titans, who scream of Operation Paperclip holdovers (taking Nazi tech = reorganizing Zakus into Hizacks, cyber newtypes imitating Kycilia's Newtype Corps, etc.), and Cold War paranoia. Their designs are simple: a freakishly sci-fi gestapo, with ugly characters to match them. It's such a fascinating blend of history and art, though I'm sure some of it is unintentional. And yeah, you are super on-point with the characters. Kamille is such a great one... given how terrible the world of Zeta is, an antisocial protagonist made a ton of sense and seeing him not accept the bullshit around him made the show a thrill to watch. The other characters are interesting too, I feel like the whole cast is fighting a battle of ideology vs. ethics/personal feelings. Everyone makes their decision by the end, be it Reccoa or Kamille or Quattro Bajeena (who weirdly looks like Char!). Such an awesome follow-up to 79. TL;DR: ZETA IS COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
@Dynamodel48 Жыл бұрын
Quattro is char anzable. AKA Casval Deikun, Edwardo Moss. I wonder if that's why the name Quattro is Casval's fourth identity. He has several conversations with Amuro, Brite Noah, Reacoa, and I believe he tells Kamil who he is in a very vague way. Amaro asks char why they fought together during the grips war, if he was only going to end life on earth in chars counter attack. Full frontal from Unicorn is NOT char. He is a cyber-newtype clone of char. Just a few need facts about who casval becomes.

Lol, things changed a lot in 5yrs. Especially pop cultural tropes. - By '83 we bid a find farewell to the '70's and Disco; as we became aware that despite the nuclear noose over our heads, called "The Cold War" - a much closer nemesis called " the body corporate" was getting outta hand. By '88 we destroyed their power knowing very well they're not just gonna give up. That is what Zeta Gundam was really about. Aclnowledging Gen X's war on corporations revolting behavior. The "Titans", are a direct reflection on this. - The english localization of Zeta injects some fairly hard core fraternal hatred, amid a potential divorce . When in actual fact, Kamille is sincerely disgusted that both his parents are employed by this this corporation, that had arisen by becoming political, and then militant. - We're not talking about public service corporations, but the consortium of interlocking directorships revolving around PMC's. If Zeta had released in the '70s it would have gotten very little press, maybe a niche audience at most; and then come the mid 80s, it would be picked up, and held high as a prophetic piece. The UC era of Gundam has quite a bit of divination throughout, its almost uncanny. So, I wouldn't say it was better than the original Gundam by any measure that isn't subjective. More to the point is its tropes are still relevant to today (on many levels), whereas the 70s are so far away from you its difficult to envision. - Like all of the UC era Gundam, Zeta is less a sequel, than it is a continuity. Thats why Unicorn and Origins did so well. They know the entire narrative of the series, its just a matter of deciding what to focus on; and tell a particular story. Thats how we end up with really good stories like 'War in the Pocket'. ZZ final act, and finale to that whole 'Zeta' era was absolutely sensational. That was what changed everything about Gundam. - but Zeta, as good as it is, was also an updated version of the Original series, to serve the youth of the 80's, and also, to evolve the continuity. It was cleverly done.
@Viseak Жыл бұрын
Crazily enough, I barely even thought of how the context of the 80’s and Gen X really drove the narrative direction, but yeah, it is still pretty relevant these days too. Great write up man

@@Viseak Onya mate 👍 - I somehow completely forgot to mention the context of how the Titans had inspired, counter-corporatism in the shape of the AEUG. Largely funded by Anaheim electronics, through the philanthropy of its board (particularly Blex Forer and Wong Lee). Anaheim began much like that of SpaceX. They were major proponents of the 'Earth reclamation project' and while the Feds percieved the Titans as a Neo Zion uprising; Anaheim and of Earth based public service corporations believed Jamitoffs true aim was to swallow up all those corporations. Which is where Luio & Co come in as backers of Karaba. Hong Kong is a major civil spaceport by thos time. So whilst Luio & Co, or Anaheim engineering are not very militant corporations. They respond to the threat on humanity as best they can. The Jupiter project is like, the big milestone of its era. The aim being to survey the planet for rare isotopes and of course, abundant He-3.

My biggest issue with zeta is the editing. Sometimes, a scene ends abruptly, and transitions to another one with a jarring change of tone. Like, you can have two characters talking calmly about their feelings and then you only have half a second between the end of their conversation and the new scene where two spaceships are fighting and there's action music. That detracts a lot from my enjoyment of the show, and it isn't something new because the movie trilogy based on 0079 does that too (like in Lalah's death scene where the scene literally ends before the end of the background song)

1st off I hope you had a merry Christmas and a happy New Year dude and secondly I'm happy that you talked about Zeta gundam. I did watch a little bit of it several years ago but never fully finished it but considering that I finished up with iron blooded orphans, did not like how season 2 was nor did I like how that ended and currently watching witch from Mercury and still in shock that it took them 11 episodes to finally give me something in terms of a plot instead of just dragging its feet over and over and a certain female character I'm being very annoyed with, I think I need something a bit more fulfilling and not is dragging as Witch lol. This did take me back from what people have been telling about Zeta for years like how Kamille is a very good protagonist despite the fact that he starts off as being a d*** but he ends up developing and growing later on, Char is at his best at this point in the series, this series hates women and people, Four was a good love interest until she died and finally that ending STILL gives me chills. I probably am just gonna go and watch the entirety of Zeta gundam again because I need to finish it and while Gundam seed Destiny TRIED to copy Zeta, it definitely didn't do at good as Zeta. @Tuning3434 Жыл бұрын
My headcanon is that Zeta decided to take a more visual approach to what Newtypes experience compared to 0079, because it is a visual media. Newtype force ghost doesn't necessary means there is a visual newtype force ghost popping up, but it can also mean characters feel / experience the presence of people. Gundams suddenly glowing doesn't necessary mean magic, but it is the visual representation of how newtype's experience interacting with some powerfull characters... gutfeeling, stone in the stomach, etc that is actually validated if you are as sensitive as a newtype. I like how this shows starts to codifying it as characters feeling pressure, because for sure newtypes are not common enough to codify a common lingo to describe their experiences.

Honestly with the crazy power creep they introduced in Fuzors (with Fuzors potentially being over 10x stronger together than seperate Zoids) and the Gairyuki stomping lots of early show Fuzors without Fuzing (clearly surpassing the previously fused Buster Fury) then yeah it’s by FAR the most broken Zoid in the line
@sachibombastic7542 жыл бұрын
@Viseak that much I do agree with. It's just I saw a comment from a different video awhile ago. Saying how the geno breaker could beat the gairyuki. So I wasn't exactly sure if the geno breaker that raven had at the end would be able to compete
@sanictheedgehog10 ай бұрын
I honestly don't agree with the series needing to be shorter. Heck you contradict yourself in saying there's a painful 10 episode stretch while saying all of the cool and exciting things that happened in that stretch. I got through that stretch in one sitting, Just because you can sit through a pretentious 7 hour god of war review but not those 10 episodes speaks more of your taste (or lack of it) than any actual condemnation of the show.

Zeta Gundam is the goat (the series and the Gundam itself). That’s the comment. Also… we all agree that Jerid is a newtype .. right?
@pablor31382 ай бұрын
I was also very confused the first episodes, who was fighting for who and all I got was this pissy protagonist Camille, I didn't like him at first but really like how he matured through the series every time he got bitchslapped, he ended up as one of the best characters. Im watching in chronological order this one being the third series after Origin and MSG, Gundam alone made me buy a year of crunchyroll.
@WorldsGreatestRingAnnouncer Жыл бұрын
I’ll make a bold statement. Camille is the strongest new type outside of Char, but Amuro is the best pilot out of any new type.

You better put some RESPEK on Jerid's name, is a BEAST pilot bruh whatchu talkin' bout ? He pilots almost every available mech and he is relentless. By the time he pilots the Byarlant, he comes into his own and he becomes a powerful newtype. Haman Karn could feel it. It took Kamille at peak newtype power to put an end to Jerid, he was no chump. But people constantly dump on Jerid saying the same thing over and over. I argue that Jerid was actually a great and WORTHY antagonist to Kamille.

Zeta is cool but story, plot, characters, settings, everything is just so much better in the original Mobile Suit Gundam
@jeremyfields9009 Жыл бұрын
I watched Zeta during the pandemic for the first time after many people telling me it’s the best Gundam show ever. Man was I underwhelmed, the villains were so one dimensional, forgettable and boring. It’s been years since I saw OG Gundam and I still remember Char, the Zabi’s, Ramba Ral, Black Tri Star, M'Quve, etc. I only remember Haman and that creep that took over the titans. the show pacing is terrible, sometimes it feels like they don’t know how to advance the plot. The mobile suits from both sides look similar so the battles are confusing sometimes. Kamille, Char, and Emma are probably the only interesting characters. I know Zeta introduce a lot of lore to the franchise but this show is alright at best. The characters in Gundam 0079 were way more compelling.
@sanictheedgehog10 ай бұрын
@@jeremyfields9009 Horrible taste. Show is great. Unironcially one of them 500 IQ shows. OG gundam is great but Zeta really hit it out of the park. Char is the best antagonist of the entire series, but the Zeta ones aren't slouches. They serve their purposes to advance character arcs like Roacca and Char's and add depth to the conflict.

5:10 A confusing explanation I give to myself in real life is if i try to differentiate between the term right wing group and left wing group in the real world during times of war since politics differ in every nation. It's like the police putting a wanted poster in Gotham labeling Batman as the number one wanted man a man who is orphaned ( long story) already in too deep and a threat to some powers that may be on the streets of Gotham.

Can you make a series that breaks down the technology used to create the Zoids and Gundam? Nobody is explaining about the technology on how it could possibly work in the real world. I've heard Nanoparticles and Nuclear fusion yada yada... But I'm interested in someone with ADHD+ to break down a whole realistic working build. Estimated Price. Software. Hardware. Metals. The whole entirety of the Robot.

@arx351610 ай бұрын
The real reason why Katz is a failed Gundam pilot is simply that there wasn't another Gundam for him to pilot! This show suffers from what i call "mono-protagonist syndrome", where you can only have 1 main protagonist and the one from the previous series must be put in the background to let the new guy shine. IMO they should have let Amuro join the Argama and pilot the Mk 2.

May you rest in peace Emma, best written women in zeta. Shes awesome. Fa is blah and annoying and Reccoa is a problematic mess of sexism that again forefront ideologies of emotional women who just need a man to sort her out 😅
@sanictheedgehog10 ай бұрын
Way to completely miss the point of Roacca. You have to be completely brain dead to come away with that take on her when that's literally the exact opposite of the message. She's a tragic victim of assualt that tried coping but ended up down the wrong path. She is then taken down by another woman who is not defined by any other male characters.

Is there any other way or I just have to painfully sit through this long episodes. Or maybe I can skip this series and just go straight to Char Counterattack movie😂 lol...
