If they have a public price tag on one guitar of over 100 grand and they won’t even tell you how much they want for the SG, you’ll probably want to take a seat before asking the price.

If you ever get the opportunity to travel out to Long Island, I'm sure the friendly folks would love to have you film a video there. Being in that room truly feels otherworldly, the greatest of the rare all in one space. A wall stocked with real bursts better than any guitar center would have R9s... That champagne pink Bass VI, the rainbow of Strats and Teles... It's heaven
@chrisva4268 Жыл бұрын
I've had the honor to visit, and they're so generous it's like a hands on museum. I played that tenor SG, pink sparkle Bass VI, a real Flying V and Burst, every kind of Strat and Tele.... Days I will always cherish

That first SG Special prototype with no bevels was neat but you can see the bevels really adds some character to the design. Love the Kerry green reverse Firebird and triple pickup non reverse one as well. The SG tenor guitar with non reverse Firebird headstock and bigsby was too cool!

I'm not really a fan of the SG, but looking at this prototype makes me appreciate how beautifully sleek the carves of the body are.

I sold it long ago---speaking of early SG's---I had a 1961 Les Paul Custom that was made in November-December of 1960. I got a letter verifying the serial number after writing to Gibson and waiting a really long time. The reply was routed through CMI. It really did not sound like a rock guitar, but I could get a great Pete Townshend Live at Leeds kind of vibe from it.

A lot of olympic white pre-CBS Strats don't have a clear coat either. A clear coat adds depth to a color (especially metallic colors) but it doesn't do much for white.
@adrianvanwormer3327 Жыл бұрын
This was a fun video to start my day with, as it's a new month and a new project, and I'm planning to build an SG this month. It won't look much like the prototype, though; the kit will come pre-beveled, and I'll be mixing quilted maple and madrone burl veneers, and sky and fire colors, for a 'Two Face' theme.
@troyhead2 Жыл бұрын
This shop is AMAZING! And they do let you pick up the guitars and play them. Paige let me try a bunch of guitars, even though she knew I wasn't going to buy anything that day. She loved to tell stories about the guitars and enjoyed pointing out the odd-balls. Would definitely recommend visiting!
@karmicselling4252 Жыл бұрын
The main goal of clear coating wood or painted wood is to protect the wood from being damaged by water, food and other materials that could stain or soften the wood. Painted wood is protected to some extent but a decent clear coat adds a significant extra layer of protection. Clear coating does come at a cost thought because it can change the colour of the underlying paint or stain finish over a long period of time. (Eg. As Trogly mentions, white finish can be yellowed over time by clear coat interaction with the underlying paint and wood.) But if the wood is properly protected and stored in an appropriate environment a clear coat is not necessary and the original colour of the painted timber will remain true for decades.
@fairguinevere666 Жыл бұрын
Clear coat can help protect it, just adding thickness means it takes longer to wear through. It can also make a color a lot deeper visually. But it is what does the yellowing, so if the guitar is treated well or even if it's compensated for with a thicker color coat it'll be gorgeous looking. It happened with Fenders too - accidentally! Sometimes they just... forgot the clear coat.

If you look carefully at the 4-String and Tenor Guitars, you'll see that the fret marker is on the 10th fret instead of the 9th. This is often seen in "traditional" Mandolins, Banjoes, Tenor Guitars, Ukuleles, Gypsy Guitars, and Russian Guitars, though the 9th fret is fairly common as well.

5:41 Both Fender and Gibson sprayed a layer of Nitrocellulose Lacquer over the paint. Nitrocellulose Lacquer oxidizes and turns yellow as it ages, making (for example) "Olympic White" Stratocasters the color of Margarine or darker Butter, so this 355 has remained pure white because it was never oversprayed with Lacquer.
@strawsparky332 ай бұрын
The paint IS nitro lacquer too. It's not just an overspray of lacquer, the color is lacquer as well. Your theory is flawed.
@zmix2 ай бұрын
@@strawsparky33 Gibson had some problems with the 335-355 series in the late 60s due to moisture content in the laminated body it's likely that they would have used a finish that would be less effected by moisture., Fender used Nitrocellulose clearcoat over Polyurethane finishes on the bodies and headstocks (over the decal - you'll notice that they are darker than the rest of the neck) through out the 70s as well.
@clarkbabin9799 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it was here I saw it first but I did find a page that had the exact firebird that was listed in that shop . It was known as a Firebird T model. Was a reverse body with the non reverse headstock. But it was in the classic tobacco burst that you see most from the 70s models. I personally prefer that model being that it is rare and I just feel it looks more natural like the head of a Firebird and with the reverse body it looks as if it's a bird in flight swooping in for its prey. I still haven't figured out how to buy that ebony block Les Paul.
